Breath of Fire III Review

By Lakitu 2000

Breath of Fire III is an RPG for PSX. It was released in 1998 and its developer is Capcom. It's more or less a standard RPG, like a Final Fantasy game, but not as complicated. It's rated E for Everyone.

BOF3 begins when you see two guys trying to blow up some huge crystal. They blow the crystal up and out comes a small dragon. The dragon rampages through the mine where all the workers are, killing everything in its path. The dragon gets captured and is taken on a train somewhere, but the cage it's in falls of the train, hurling the dragon on to the road. When the dragon is woken up by Rei and Teepo, two bandits, it's not a dragon but a boy named Ryu.

The two bandits take Ryu in and make him become a theif. The three go around stealing what they can. Eventually, after a while of stealing and fighting, Ryu comes back to the house to see it engulfed in flames, and Rei and Teepo are nowhere to be found. Ryu then sets out to find his missing friends, encountering new friends, quests, and dangers along the way.

The Main Characters are...

Ryu: Ryu is the main charcter. Turn on the game and he's yours. He has good strength and magic and he possesses the ability to change into a dragon when you get dragon genes.

Teepo: A strange orphan bandit that has great magic power. He joins the game at the very beginning. He leaves the party forever when the house is burnt down.

Rei: A lion/human bandit that has very good strength. He joins your party at the same time as Teepo, and leaves at the same time, but comes back a little bit after you become an adult. He can steal items in battle but cannot use very good magic.

Nina: Nina is the Queen of Windia. She joins your party when you make it to Windia Castle. She has the best magic of all but is not very good physically.

Momo: Momo is a scholar researching crysm. I forget the name of the place, but she joins you in a big maze a little bit after Windia castle. She uses crysm to attack and is pretty balanced.

Pecoros (Peco): Peco is a creation born in a lab. He joins your party after you beat the crysm dump. His life restores naturally but other than that he is a weakling.

Garr: The champion of the Grand Weapons Tournament, Guardian to his people, and a dragon hunter. Garr joins your party after you lose to him in the tournament. He is extremely strong with physical but has very bad magic attacks.

Scoring Note: This game will be graded on a scale of 7.

Graphics: 4

Very poor graphics, they were about what you would expect from a SNES game, but the graphics didn't effect gameplay at all.

Storyline: 7

Another unfolding storyline, they are so unbeatable, and you never know what to expect, and nothing spoils when the storyline unfolds, although it's pretty weak at the start of the game.

Sound: 2

The music was really boring. Other than when there was new music to hear, I kept the volume on my TV down. Some songs are good, but that doesn't make up for all the bad ones. As for the sound effects, they were ok, but nothing special.

Control: 5

The control was really annoying sometimes. You can get trapped in places and the buttons can getconfusing sometimes.

Characters: 7

There were tons other than the main characters. There were so many important characters that were not important enough to be main characters, and the game is so big there are tons of 'em! And the way the characters acted and looked was good too.

Length: 7

REALLY LONG! It takes about twenty hours if you're just starting out just to beat the part when you're a child. As for when you're an adult, well, I don't want to get into that. It's so big!

Battle Mode: 6

No annoying going into battle modes because you play right on the spot. As for the battle modes, they are great because there are lots of options to choose from, and you can order your party to different positions, and the effects for spells are pretty good.

Difficulty: 7

This game is brutal for mazes and boss fights.

Items: 7

There were lots of items, most providing a purpose, and there were only a few useless ones. The weapons had a wide variety and not everyone could equip the same things.

Fun Factor!: 6

The game was lots of fun, but it got boring and it was one of those games that if the power went out and you forgot to save, you would never want to play the game again.

Overall: 6

It was really good, one of the best PSX RPGs

Recommendation:

I suggest you buy the game if givin the chance, because you will have to play it a lot if you rent it and it's really long so there is not much point unless you continuously play it. It's a must have for BOF and Capcom fans.
