Rhythm Heaven Review

Genre: Music, Rhythm Game
Platform: Nintendo DS(i)
Developed By: Nintendo
ERSB Rating: E for Everyone
Released: April 5th, 2009

For my first Review, I just wanted to talk about a game called Rhythm Heaven, or Rhythm Paradise for people in Europe.

Plot/Storyline: 7.9/10
There isn't a plot/story, but there are minigames, like in the WarioWare series, that you have to beat in order to move on to the next. These games are the easiest in the world for some, but hardcore for others, because you need a sense of rhythm.

Controls: 7/10
The only things you need is a touch screen and a stylus! That's right, no buttons on most games. (Rockers 2 requires the R button/L Button, and you pause games with Select.) The downside: If your touchscreen is broken, the game is nearly unplayable,

Music and Sound: 9.1/10
The music rocks in this game. There are Almost all types of music in this game, from music that says "I'm in Love", to music that just want to make you dance. There are 5 tracks with vocals in them in this game. In my opinion, every track sounds good, but some people don't really like Thrilling! Is this Love and Love Oh Oh Paradise. But the other 45 mini-games do have catchy music, it's just that sometimes you've gotta focus on the actions and not the music. This game isn't full of dialogue, In fact, textboxes usually come out of a character's mouth (such as a monkey in the audience in Fan Club ) during practices.

Extras: 5.9/10
This game has unlockables, not counting minigames. There is Endless games, Rhythm Toys*, Guitar Lessons*, Stuff to Read, and Listen mode too. But the Reading is only about the characters (good for the wondering eye), the Rhythm Toys are disappointing, and the Endless games... may be the good part of the extras. Listen to music is a good add-on because we can listen to the music and not just look at whatever's happening. Bottom line: Most of the extras were just disappointing.

Difficulty: 8/10
Unless you don't have rhythm, the game is pretty easy, but sometimes flicking can be a drag, and you have to be on time, all the time! If you have scored a "Superb!" in the minigame, you might get a chance to perfect it, and get some extras from it. But it's replayable after unlocking all 10 minigames! Let's not forget, some games try to trick you into stopping, then BAM! You missed a perfect opportunity. The first 6 sets of minigames are just the easy ones, the next 4 sets are harder.

Graphics: 7/10
They aren't the best graphics, but they are good. It's mostly 2D sprites, but the 3D minigames have really good textures. The 2D games have really entertaining graphics, and are also very colorful at some points.

Fun Factor!: 7/10
The first few minigames have you waiting a long time and get tiring, but the harder they get, the more fun they become. It’s the same thing with music: the cooler it sounds, the better it is.

Overall: 8/10
I love the game and I highly recommend it to people who love music or are trying new things. At least try the demo that is on the Nintendo Channel for Wii.) This game has lived up to my expectations, and I hope it does for you too... That is of course, if you decide to buy it. But of course, I don't recommend it to people who didn't enjoy other rhythm games or just want to play a game with the volume off.
