Mario Party 8 Review

By Yosh 3000

I got a copy of Mario Party 8 a month ago. I was too busy working on Quadruple Trouble to make a Review. Anyway, I shall judge on a 1-10 scale. So let the judgment review begin!

Game Modes: 7/10
There are five game modes: Party, Super Star Battle, Minigame, Extra, and Bazaar. The Party mode is rather fun but Super Star Battle kinda bores me. The Bazaar is similar to the one in Mario Party 7, however, the items are more interactive. I wish that they’d added an options mode, like usual games. I didn't like Extra Mode very much, so I think that the mode should have been replaced by options.

Story: 4/10
What could I say? There barely is any story! In Super Star Battle Arena, the character you picked goes through a tournament of battles with the Mario Party characters. The score would be 1 if it weren't for the plot getting interesting near the end. But I won't say why.

Characters: 9/10
A fine set of playable characters are available! The classics (excluding Donkey Kong) are still around. Dry Bones was also made a starting character! Also, Hammer Brother and Blooper appear as unlockables! Many characters appear on the boards. Some of these haven’t been seen for a while, such as the Dolphins from Super Mario World! New characters such as MC Ballyhoo and Miis are a good addition too. Personally, I like to play as Mario, Dry Bones, and Hammer Brother. This wouldn't have gotten a 9 if they didn't take out Koopa Kid, who was a favorite character for me too.

Boards: 8/10
The boards are very fun to play! There are five to start with and one that’s unlockable. DK's Treetop Temple follows the classic Mario Party gameplay, which I liked. Goomba's Booty Boardwalk was easy... a bit too easy. King Boo's Haunted Hideaway was fairly challenging, actually. Shy Guy's Perplex Express is somewhat fun despite being like Goomba's Booty Boardwalk. Koopa's Tycoon Town is my favorite, as I like modern city boards. The last one I cannot say. This seemed to be like Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where they seemed to focus more on graphics (although the graphics in this game are quite nice). The boards are a bit bland without a Day/Night or Bowser system though. If the boards were a lot like DK's Treetop Temple then this would have gotten a 9.

Items: 5/10
Yes, the candy items stinks. Sure, the effects are great, but there are only about 8 candies in the game! They should have kept the orbs, which had a wider variety.

Minigames: 9/10
The minigames has been greatly improved by the Wii controls, such as shaking the Wiimote up and down to shake a soda can or tilting the Wiimote to turn. The minigames are quite fun, each with different purposes. My personal favorite is Cardinators. However, Nintendo seems to focus more on the Duel minigames this time around. Other than that, the minigames were very fun.

Replayabillity: 9/10
Each game has its own possibilities. The COMs could be on low or high difficulties, there could be a different number of players, and there are more changes to make the game challenging! The game is very fun, so your chances of playing it again are very huge. Although, after about two weeks, the fun begins to wear off.

Overall: 51/70
Grade: B-
This game is very fun! Sure, it has some donwsides, but it's a good game! This is highly recommended for any basic Wii owner!
