Beetle Adventure Racing Review

System: Nintendo 64

At first glance it looks like this is yet another racing game that should go in the garbage bin. The jest of it is simple… you're racing Volkswagen Beetles, a type of car that really doesn't go that fast. It's natural to assume that that's how the game will be: slow-paced and boring.

However, as soon as you boot up the game you'll realize that it's everything but that. EA Sports somehow managed to make a racing game with just 1 type of vehicle that is a blast to play. From the main menu you'll have lots of options. You can do 1 Player, 2 Player, change options, or even play Beetle Battle, a Capture the Flag-type game for 2 or more players. Every mode is fun, you aren't going to be bored to death. Though it's questionable that Bugs can go more than 130 MPH…

From the get-go you have three tracks to choose from. Each one is really thought-out and gigantic. The first is basically a drive through the country, as you'll pass a farmhouse, plenty of grass, and a waterside town. The second takes place on a huge, snowy mountain. It's really beautiful, and draws you in. The third is on an island, complete with forests, two towns, and even a couple of dinosaurs.

If you want to unlock the remaining courses you'll have to play Tournament Mode, the main 1 Player game. You initially have one difficulty setting to choose from, Novice. This features the three tracks I mentioned. If you win you'll unlock Advanced, and then Professional difficulty, with each cup adding a new course to your game.

For each cup you beat you unlock three new cars, each one with higher stats and different designs, and tons of colors to choose from. Once you beat Professional you'll unlock the Alien Car, a rainbow-colored car that is nearly perfect stats-wise. It also has a horn that when used, says, "We come in peace." Very bizarre, but great nonetheless.

After beating Professional difficulty you also unlock a bonus mode. This is basically an Expert level tournament, with all six courses. It's highly suggested you use the Alien Car, since it's quite difficult. If you beat this mode you get one last car, a Police Car, with max stats, a siren, and the ability to pull over cars. How awesome is that?!

But that's just single player. If you have a friend you can compete in single race, which is a blast, and a multiplayer exclusive mode, Beetle Battle. In Beetle Battle the goal is to collect different emblems, then to race to the goal. There are lots of items you can use to slow down your opponent, which gives it a Mario Kart-like feel to it.

All in all this is great game. Sadly, it's rather old, so not many stores carry it, but if you find one that does, it's a bargain for around 10 bucks. This game is fun for any age group, whether you're alone or with friends.
