Sonic 1 Review

By Wacky Sonic

I love Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as Mario. The first Sonic I ever played was Sonic 2. After that, I received Sonic 1 to complete the series.

This Review is out of 10.

Gameplay: 7/10

Watching Sonic the hedgehog running with speed is fun. However, there are a few problems. Since the spin dash wasn't created in Sonic 1 (it was created in Sonic 2), getting through some loops can be frustrating - you have to backtrack a bit to run quicker and go through the loop or upwards slope. Other than that, no problems. The losing rings business is simple to overcome. If you're running at full speed, all you have to do is press down to spin so you don’t have to worry about enemies. It does get annoying in spiky areas though.

Graphics: 8/10

Not an important trait. The graphics are pretty good here. The clouds with parallax scrolling in Green Hill Zone look cool, all the levels have nice coloring, and the rippling effect in the water zone is very nice.

Sound: 9/10

Music-wise, I think that Sonic music is better than Mario music. Ok, I'm prepared to be beaten up by hardcore Mario fans, but it's my opinion. Not saying I don't like Mario music, I really do like it. Sonic 1 and 2 have what may be my favorite soundtracks. The sound effects are nice and not tinny and irritating, and there is a nice variety of sounds.

Difficulty: 8/10

The first three levels are quite easy, but a sharp curve comes to the fourth level (a water level named Labyrinth Zone). This zone is quite hard and a bit frustrating at times to most players. The fact that Sonic can't swim will annoy some Mario fans, and the fact that he drowns does annoy me - but it's realistic. The fifth level is easy but can be annoying since you can speed your way into a bottomless pit. The sixth and final level contains water. There is also a very annoying bug concerning spikes. If Sonic hits a row of spikes, he will jerk back while losing his rings, and hit another set of spikes and die, without any post-hit invincibility, and without a chance to recollect some rings. This is very annoying in the Labyrinth Zone.

Levels:
Green Hill Zone: 8/10 - A bit too easy for my liking. Great music and some good loops, with great speed makes this level memorable.

Marble Zone: 5/10 - This level is quite slow and boring, and the parts where lava raises the blocks can be frustrating. Not an exciting level to be honest.

Spring Yard Zone: 7/10 - A nice song accompanies a bizarre level. Some very annoying badniks are in this stage, and the moving blocks are slow and annoying.

Labyrinth Zone: 4/10 - A very frustrating and annoying zone, full of spikes and water. Didn't like this zone much.

Star Light Zone: 9/10 - This is my favorite zone in the game, having speed, great music, and a funny badnik that explodes. I just didn't like the orb with spikes that cannot be killed.

Scrap Brain Zone: 6.5/10 - The first two levels were great, difficult, and had great music. Unfortunately a very frustrating dunk back into the Labyrinth Zone in Act 3 spoils this zone.

Bosses: 8/10

The bosses aren't at all the same like in Mario games, whose bosses are very similar. The only similarity is that you're fighting Dr. Robotnik each time, but in different ways. The bosses are fun except the Labyrinth Zone, which is frustrating since fire-breathing statues, spikes, and rising water can kill easily.

Controls: 10/10

The controls are great and simple. They are perfect for a speedy game like this.

Replayability: 6/10.

You can explore different paths to each zone, but there aren't really any extras to find except for the special stages that have Chaos Emeralds. Collecting them won't even yield Super Sonic.

Overall: 7.5/10.

The first Sonic game is a good start to the series. It's a shame since new Sonic games are going horribly wrong. I like this game a lot, but not as much as Sonic 2. It's a shame that the game doesn't have a save feature, as it is rather long. A nice start to the Sonic series.
