Graphics: *1/2
Now understandably the Classic modes
have poor graphics, but not even the Modern modes have decent
graphics. The graphics really aren’t
that important, but it would be nice to see a little improvement over the
first two games. It didn’t happen here.
Sound: **
The music is okay, with some being good
(Donkey Kong Jr.), and some being over-repetitive (Mario Bros.).
The sound effects are again not perfect,
but they aren’t annoying, at least not in the Modern mode. Maybe the Classic
mode’s sound effects are a little annoying, but the real trouble for those
games is that there is no music at all. I like the DK Jr. music enough
to give it an average score.
Difficulty: (rated on how difficult, not on how good)
Turtle Bridge: Classic: *** Modern:
**1/2
The Classic mode is simple for the
first minute you play it, then becomes much harder. The Modern mode is
a little easier than the first, but
it can be quite difficult at times.
Donkey Kong Jr.: Classic: ***1/2 Modern: *1/2
It takes almost forever to figure out how to get the key in DK Jr. in Classic mode, or at least until you’re on your third game of playing it, down to your last life. It’s very hard to get going once you restart after a miss. In Modern mode it’s a lot easier to play and understand.
Mario Bros.: Classic: * Modern: *
This game is pretty easy no matter how you play it. It’s simple button-pressing.
Greenhouse: Classic: ** Modern: *1/2
I’ve not played Classic much, so I’ll give it an average score, considering that the Modern mode is pretty easy and that most of the time the game’s difficulties are similar.
Egg: Classic: ** Modern: **
I haven’t played Classic much here either, but the Modern mode is average difficulty, so the difficulty would probably be on the average level if I played it for a while.
Controls: ***1/2
I really like the controls for most
of the games. It’s easy to understand the way they work, and even for the
hidden mini-games they are pretty easy.
One complaint: two things going on at one time can really mix you up, like
in Mario Bros. and in Lion (a hidden mini-game), so a half-star must be
lost there, although it’s
really not that serious.
Characters: ***
These are the normal characters, DK,
DK Jr., Bowser, Peach, Yoshi, Luigi, Toad, Wario, and Mario, of course.
Even Mr. Game & Watch, who made a recent appearance in Super Smash
Bros. Melee, makes an
appearance in all those Classic modes.
I guess he really isn’t much, though. A few other characters would be nice,
but these are fine for this game.
Gameplay:
Turtle Bridge: Classic: **1/2 Modern:
***
It’s fairly easy and fun to do, but
it does get boring and it does get very tricky at times, in both of the
modes.
Donkey Kong Jr.: Classic: no stars Modern:
***1/2
I don’t like the Classic mode at all,
because you can get trapped and the enemies are sometimes very hard to
see. In Modern mode, everything is
carried out in a very easy-to-follow manner and it is more than simple
moving around from egg to egg, for
example.
Mario Bros.: Classic: ** Modern: ***1/2
The Classic mode is pretty boring,
but almost the same as the Modern mode. Still, I like full color and
better characters and a bigger screen.
Plus, the switches Bowser hits can throw thing off for a second.
Greenhouse: Classic: * Modern: **1/2
Given the way the other Classic modes
are, Greenhouse wouldn’t fare any better if I actually played it as much
as the Modern mode. The Modern mode lets you use fire at times and is pretty
challenging, as well.
Egg: Classic: * Modern: *1/2
I don’t really like the Modern mode,
so that would carry even more into the Classic mode, which I don’t
spend enough time on to care. The Modern
mode makes you do too many things at once, which annoys me. The Boos annoy
me, too, but it is at least almost average.
Replayability: **1/2
I guess you can play this game again
and again to get more stars for more secret games, but there’s not
enough in this game to keep you playing
for a long while.
Fun Factor!: **1/2
This is almost the same as the replay
value: It’s fun, but there’s not enough that’s fun.
OVERALL: **
Overall, this game is worth a look
if you are maybe going on a trip or something, or have a lot of time to
spend, but it’s not much in the Mario world and not enough to spend the
full $30 over. I’d spend maybe $10
on it if I could buy it at that amount,
but that’s about it. So either skip it or buy it cheap, because it’s only
average and not worth paying the full price.
