System: Wii
Rated: E 'For Everyone'
No. Of Players: 4 Players Simoltenously
Story: *
There are 8 races in the game: 2 Unofficial
Races, 3 Virtual Terminal Races, and 3 WBC Races. The story starts out
with you meeting Rally after he (yes, he) finished building your Duel Runner.
After that, you compete in a Virtual Terminal, which is pretty much dueling
online... Anyway, you also duel Officer Trudge during the Terminal Arc,
and he accuses you of stealing the Duel Terminal. When you win the Duel
Terminal Championships, you get to participate in the WBC. The storyline
slightly differs the first and second time you play it, and when you beat
it 2 times, you get to select which stage to play in.
Graphics: ****
They are awesome, the classic cel-shading
has come back, but not like the horrible looks that The Legend of Zelda:
The Windwaker had, because these are better. The monsters are highly detailed
and the motorcyclists/duelists are also very well designed. It's just too
great to explain in mere words. Still, Stardust Dragon rules!
Music and Sound: **
The music is okay, but the announcer’s
voice isn't all that expected (by expected I mean great). Do yourself a
favor, and unless you want to hear the music, turn down the volume.
Courses: ***
This would be called "Levels", but
it's a racing game, isn't it? The courses are also really great, but they
have a real problem with the almost infinite turns in a level. My 2 favorite
levels are the Kaiba Dome (straight-forward level with only 4 turns) and
The Satelite (many ramp-like features). The levels that really annoy you
to the point of killing someone are levels that have many turns, because
the Runners don't turn that well.
Gameplay: ****
(Did I mention you can save your data
onto the WiiMote to play on a friend's console? Well you can!)
The gameplay is really unique, and is more like Mario Kart than YGO! What I really hate is when you crash into a wall, you basically come to a complete stop. And sometimes one little mistake can make you flip over completely and cost you the race. You use cards as Power-Ups. I should clear up some basic terms, and beware, these are totaly different from Yu-Gi-Oh.
Hand: This is where you view your cards and maybe use one or two by pressing ? on the D-Pad.
Direct Attack: When your opponent has no monster and you attack them successfully.
Life Points: You start out with 4,000. Well you SHOULD, but sometimes I start out 4,300 or more for some strange reason... When you lose all your Life Points, rather then losing, you spin out, which badly damages your progress.
There are 3 card types, like in Yu-Gi-Oh.
Monsters: You need D-Counters (Speed Counters) to summon these. They are like equipped weapons and you can control only one monster at a time, and the stronger the monster the more D-Counters you need to summon them. You also need a certain number of D-Counters to attack with monsters. You can usually tell you have enough when it says ATTACK ON! beneath the monster’s stats. The funniest yet most annoying part of the game is aiming at the opponent while driving, but stronger monsters have lock-on attacks and longer range. The most balanced monster would be Junk Warrior.
Spells: Spells can be activated by pressing up on the D-Pad while cycling through them in your hand. They usually help you, but there are spells like Heavy Storm and Sparks that harm your opponent's progress. But most of them help you, such as Rush Recklessly.
Traps: Up to 3 traps can be set at any
one time, and they activate without your further involvement once set.
Most of them stop attacks or damage. An attack stopper is Mirror Force
or Sakuretsu Armor.
Controls: ****
(This game uses the Nunchuk.)
The controls are ridiculously easy to learn. The only hard thing would be aiming while driving backwards...
Racing Controls:
Z - Accelerate
C - Break/Reverse
D-Pad Up - Activate Spell/Set Trap/Summon
Monster
D-Pad Left/Right - Turbo
Analog Stick - Steer Left and Right
+ - Pause
A - Attack (Only when you have a monster)
B - Change Camera Angle to Head (in
front of the Runner) - This is useful for only 2 things: looking cool and
aiming while driving backwards
Shake WiiMote - Drive backwards; The
same controls apply. Left is left, not right as you'd expect. This is only
useful for 2 things: showing off your amazing driving prowess and attacking
racers behind you.
Menu Controls:
D-Pad Left/Right - I think this is
only used to adjust volume level and to switch from deck to trunk.
D-Pad Up/Down - Scroll up and down
on the Menu options.
A - Select a menu item/option
B - Return to previous menu.
Characters: ****
A whole bunch of characters.... I'm
going to put them in Storyline (A and B) order. After you beat them you
can use them, but not their decks, sadly.
{Insert Your Guy's Name Here} - You
can make your own character, and if your friends have Wheelie Breakers,
they can also play with their characters!
Hoodlum - The guy who wants your Duel
Runner. You bet him your Duel Runner for his Duel Terminal.
Security 1 - He thinks you bought the
Duel Terminal with money you got from selling fake Duel Runner parts.
Leo - Your first Duel Runner opponent,
this guy loves using Morphtronics, and his Celfon is usable in any deck.
Mr. Armstrong - The Facility's old
chief, he's your 2nd round Duel Terminal opponent. Beware of his Iron Chain
Dragon.
Officer Tetsu Trudge - The Police have
come back and they want to take the "stolen" Duel Terminal, but this is
a duel you can easily win.
Akizi Ikinzi - I think that's her name...
Also known as the Black Rose Witch, she is one of the hardest opponents.
Beware her Wall of Ivy and Black Rose Dragon!
Luna - When playing for the 2nd time,
you duel her instead of the Witch. She's Leo's twin sister and is stronger
than she looks. Her cards involve her increasing her Life Points, and her
Sunny Union is a 1800 ATK Beastick splashable in any deck.
Huneter Pace - One of the medium difficulty
duels, he uses a Burning Skull Deck and is not that a bad guy. He's friendly...
(WEIRD)
Bolt Tanner - He's friendly since the
moment you meet him, not like Pace. He uses his Ushi Oni cards to destroy
the competition.
Greiger - I totally forgot about this
guy when I played for the first time. I beat him by 1/2 a lap the first
time, and the second time by a whole lap! He uses Reactor monsters, but
with a well-timed Junk Warrior, he is completely helpless.
Yusei Fudo - The Indomitable Junk Dueler...
Yusei Fudo! This ex-satellite (kike you and Jack) got to be the best in
the world. He uses his trademark Stardust Dragon to crush and annihilate
the competition. Beware, his Junk Warrior is also annoying. His Stardust
Dragon is splashable in any deck.
Jack Atlas - The Master of Faster,
the King Jack Atlas! He uses Red Dragon Archfiend to crush the competition!
Rally - He is your best bud in the
world of Dueling, and is with you all the time.
Supporters - Rex G, Mina, Lazar, Security,
and others...
Items: **
Action Points: When you drive over
these, they fill your D-Counter gauge (12 max).
Draw!: These look like cards with a
rainbow aura. They let you draw one card (max in hand is 7).
Difficulty: ***
The first few levels are easy, but
the final level, Round 1 of the WBC, and Round 3 of the Terminal, are ridiculously
hard, so be prepared for serious annoyance.
Replayability: ****
There are 2 different storylines, and
after you beat those 2 you get a Stage Select option. But you can never
quit playing, because every time you beat a character, you get one of their
cards, and you just want to have 'em all, so beat and collect, and repeat!
Fun Factor!: ***
This game is really fun, and great
for Yu-Gi-Oh! or Mario Kart fans. And for YGO! fans, it's also a great
break from the card games.
Overall: ***
This game is really good, and I recommend
it to any lover of the racing genre. By the way, did I mention that you
get 3 FREE PROMOTIONAL CARDS with the game?! WELL YOU DO!!!
Well this is the end of another game Review. This brings my count up to 5! Remember to tip the waitress!
*Waitress falls*
