ToeJam and Earl Review

By LuigiOwnz

There was a time when Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t the only franchise SEGA depended on. We had other awesome franchises: Alex Kidd, VectorMan, and of course, ToeJam and Earl. This game was made for the Sega Genesis in 1991 and was later re-released on Virtual Console and X-Box Live Arcade.

Story: 8/10
The main plot of the game is that ToeJam and Earl are cruising in space in their Righteous Rapmaster RocketShip. But when Earl takes the wheel for ToeJam, they run themselves into a meteor shower and crashland their ship on planet Earth. Now they have to reassemble the twelve pieces of their spaceship while avoiding dangerous Earthlings and return to their home planet of Funk-O-Tron.

Characters: 7/10
The main characters in ToeJam and Earl are ToeJam, a red alien with three legs, a backwards baseball cap, and a gold medallion, and Big Earl, a large orange alien with polka-dotted shorts and sunshades. While ToeJam can move faster than Earl, Earl can take more hits than ToeJam can. The enemies in this game are stereotypical Earth creatures, from hip-shaking hula girls to mentally challenged dentists.

Controls: 7/10
ToeJam and Earl plays pretty well. The control pad makes you move around, A Button lets you sneak up on enemies and/or use an item, B Button opens up the item screen, and of course, Start pauses the game.

Multiplayer: 11/10
ToeJam and Earl is a good game for one player, but let’s face it! It’s called ToeJam AND Earl for a reason, and that reason is to play with another player. And man, is it fun to play with someone else collecting items, exploring maps, and other cool stuff. While the game can be played with a split-screen where each player can freely explore on their own, ToeJam and Earl CLEARLY do better as a team on the same screen together.

Music: 11/10
If you look at the boxart for the game, ToeJam is saying “Jammin’!” I think that’s the prefect description for the music in this game. It’s really catchy and well-composed, especially for a Genesis game.

Levels: 5/10
Each level basically looks the same. The only difference is that some things like gaps, quicksand, water, and other stuff are placed in different spots. Other than that, not much to say.

Overall: 7/10
ToeJam and Earl was an outstanding game for its time, and still remains a cult favorite among the 2-player co-op world. While ToeJam and Earl improved greatly with their sequels (Panic on Funk-O-Tron and Mission To Earth), the original is still a great way to get a head start on the series. If you have money worth spending on a video game, whether on eBay, Wii Shop Channel, or X-Box Live, buy this SEGA Genesis Classic and get ready to feel the funk!
