Story: 9/10
A strange new disease called “the blorbs”
starts affecting Toads all over the Mushroom Kingdom! And it seems that
everyone’s (sort of) favorite psycho Fawful is back with his own plan to
takeover the Mushroom Kingdom. Apparently he doesn’t need a witch’s help
to do it. He gives Bowser a “Lucky(?) Mushroom” that makes him start inhaling
everything that he sees. Soon, he comes to the castle and inhales all of
Toad Town- including the Mario Bros! Now miniscule, Mario and Luigi have
to find a way to cure the blorbs from inside their arch-nemesis. Meanwhile,
Bowser is oblivious to the Marios’ presence inside him and seeks revenge
on Fawful for taking over his castle and brainwashing his minions.
Gameplay: 10/10
The gameplay deserves this 10. I mean,
you get to play as Bowser, people! The Marios and Bowser each have
their own buttons- A and B for the Mario Bros, X and Y for Bowser. The
Marios can jump and hammer, while Bowser can punch and breathe fire. It
retains the classic RPG thrills of the first two, but has two new commands:
Bros. Badges for the Marios and a Vacuum attack for Bowser. Smaller enemies
that you find in battle, like Coalbits, can be sucked up and fought as
Mario and Luigi! True tag-team! Plus, as a way to make up for Partners
in Time’s lack of stylus, touch screen, and Mic use, they added more into
the game for those suckers.
Graphics: 10/10
Awesome. The only word that describes
them, unless you can think of a better one. (Insane, perhaps?) Mario and
Luigi’s sprite work has gone under major overhaul, as has Bowser and… well…
pretty much everyone and everything! The enemies, the Marios, Bowser… all
just wow. The backgrounds look great, inside and outside Bowser. I don’t
think I can say anything bad about the graphics!
Music: 10/10
The reign of getting-stuck-in-your-head-type
music abounds here. Whether it be the catchy Cavi Cape or the ever-so-epic
Dark Bowser duel, Nintendo’s music-men totally didn’t let you down this
time! In fact… I’ll get started on recording some songs right now!
Controls: 9/10
The controls are pretty much the same
as Partners in Time -A and B for Mario and Luigi, X and Y for Bowser. R
changes field actions, L changes them back to the basics (jumping for the
Marios punching and fire-breathing for Bowser). The touch screen has many
more functions than in PiT, also. From directing pollen into Bowser’s nasal
cavity walls to the Giant Bowser battles (which depend solely on the Touch
Screen and microphone), this game’s more built-in Touch Screen/Mic use
is a good improvement over PiT.
Overall Score: 10/10
*starts singing* Oh, one of the best games ever, one of the best games ever, this is one of the best games ever! *stops singing* This… is the DS game that needs to be owned to actually truly experience DS enjoyment. Whether you’re a new, moderately-skilled, or hardened veteran to the Mario & Luigi series, the third title in this great trilogy is a must-buy. Plus I’ve already beaten it, so just trust me on this one.
