Gameplay and Controls: ****1/2
Battalion Wars 2 combines
land, sea, and air combat. Unlike its predecessor, which did not feature
naval combat, BWii brings in five new sea-faring units. Also, the Heavy
and Light Recon units are replaced by the single Recon unit that possesses
the Heavy Recon's defense and extra gun as well as the Light Recon's speed.
There are six factions in the game. They are Western Frontier, Tundran
Territories, Solar Empire, Xylvania, Iron Legion, and a new faction called
the Anglo Isles. The basic controls are:
B: Fire
A: Issue orders
Z: Lock on
C: Change camera view
-: View map
+: Pause menu
Control Stick: Move
Control Pad: Select units
Wii Remote: Look around
The controls are very diverse,
but what prevents the 5-star rating is that some of the controls may be
somewhat erratic. Overall, however, the controls are great.
Multiplayer: **
This is a very huge problem
with the game, as it lacks a local multiplayer mode. There is only an online
multiplayer mode that can be obtained by having WiFi. This game, however,
makes up for it with...
Units: *****
This game possesses many
different units. The units are divided into four divisions: infantry, vehicle,
air, and naval. The units are:
Infantry
Grunt: The common soldier
of your Battalion. Effective against infantry, vulnerable against anything
else.
Assault: These units hold
rapidfire guns. Strong against infantry and light vehicles, weak to heavier
vehicles.
Anti-Air: Soldiers that
hold missile launchers that can down aircraft. They are vulnerable against
ground units.
Flame: Troops that have
flamethrowers. Strong against infantry, weak against vehicles. (Note: Xylvania
has an equilivent unit called Acid Gas Vets.)
Bazooka: These guys have
rocket launchers. They are useful in downing vehicles, but not infantry.
Mortar: Grenade-wielding
troopers. Great in flushing infantry from up-close and far off. They can
also destroy vehicles. Vulnerable to air and naval units.
Vehicles
Recon: A fast-attack unit
with a machine gun. Can wipe out most infantry, can be destroyed by tanks
and Bazooka Vets.
Light Tank: A tank that
can wipe out enplacements and infantry. Vulnerable to air units, stronger
tanks, and Bazookas.
Heavy Tank: A more powerful
version of the Light Tank. Can be destroyed by stronger tanks, Bazookas,
and air units.
Anti-Air Vehicle: A tank
designed to shoot down air units. Weak against ground targets.
Artillery: A long-range
unit that can destroy targets far off. Can be breeched by Bazookas, close-combat
units, air units, and Battlestations.
Battlestation: The strongest
of all vehicles, it is a threat to all ground forces. Can only be destroyed
by air units.
Air
Gunship: An attack helicopter.
Strong against ground targets, weak against Fighters and ground units that
perform anti-air combat.
Fighter: The fastest of
all units. This plane can destroy other aircraft, but cannot lock on to
ground targets and can be breeched by AA units. However, they can barrel
roll to avoid AA missile lock.
Bomber: A stronger version
of the Gunship, this unit can drop a heavy load of bombs. Can be knocked
out by AA units.
Strato Destroyer: The strongest
of the air units and possibly out of all the units in the game, the Strato
Destroyer can fire air-to-air missiles and can drop a heavy load of bombs.
Can only be destroyed by hitting it from the rear.
Air Transport: A transport
copter. Doesn't have offensive capabilites.
Naval
Frigate: This ship can
eliminate Subs and aircraft. Vulnerable to Battleships and Dreadnoughts.
Submarine: Can submerge
to avoid detection. Strong against Dreadnoughts and Battleships, weak against
Frigates.
Battleship: The Battleship
possesses two long-range cannons that can wipe out land units. Vulnerable
to Subs, Dreadnoughts, and aircraft.
Dreadnought: The strongest
out of all naval units, the Dreadnought possesses 3 cannons instead of
two. Can be breeched by Subs and air units. However, it could be dangerous
if an air unit goes too low because that could lead it into the Dreadnought's
AA fire.
Naval Transport: A ship
that can take land units in and out of battle.
Storyline: ****
Commander Pierce and Colonel
Windsor of the Anglo Isles, believing that the Solar Empire has constructed
a superweapon, launch a surprise attack upon the Solar Empire. The storyline
is great, but there are a few things that may not make sense. Overall,
however, the storyline is great.
Difficultly: ***
Some of the levels are
easy, some are medium, and some are hard. Since it’s difficult to get a
perfect rating, I will rate this section with three stars.
Online Play: ****
The online play is good.
The three modes online are assault, skirmish, and co-op. In assault, one
player is given a siege Battalion and has to destroy the opposing player’s
assets. In skirmish, both players start with a pre-deployed force sent
to destroy as many enemy units as possible. The player with the most points
wins. In co-op, two players join forces to take out a larger computer.
What prevents the 5-star rating is that in co-op, two players are forced
to heavily rely on each other, which makes for an unfair disadvantage.
However, the overall online play is great.
Replayability: *****
You can replay any level
you want if you enjoy the level or want to get a higher score.
Fun Factor!: *****
When you beat the game
or complete an entire campaign on either S or A rank, you can unlock some
special goodies.
Overall: ****1/2
Battalion Wars 2 is a game
worth buying. It may not be perfect, but it is still a great game.
