Story-7/10
Um… Here we go
again? Pretty clichéd by now after about 12 games… but with a twist!
Peach’s birthday party is crashed by the Koopalings (Yay Koopalings, finally
making their breakout appearance since Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
6 years ago. Ooh, cool! Brand new looks!) and Bowser Jr. disguised as a
cake. They grab her and run off, and Mario, Luigi, and the new playables,
Yellow and Blue Toads, go save her.
Controls-10/10
The controls
are simple, which makes it deserve a 10. Holding the Wii-mote sideways,
the Control Pad moves, the 1 button makes you run, the 2 button jumps,
and you can shake the Wii-mote to do a Spin Jump (returning from Super
Mario World). Pressing 1 and shaking the Wii-mote lets you pick up other
players and enemies frozen with a thrown ice ball. On the map, the 2/A
buttons select a level, the – button leads you to the world select screen,
and pressing the 1 button leads to an item storage screen (this returns
from Super Mario Bros. 3)!
Gameplay-9/10
Easy-peasy. The
gameplay is as smooth and clear as mountain spring water! You can ride
YOSHIS (making their first rideable appearance since 2001’s Super Mario
Sunshine), stomp enemies, and save the princess using power-ups… some old,
some brand-spanking-new! The Ice Flower from Galaxy returns along with
new items, the Penguin Suit and the Propeller Mushroom. Mushrooms, Mini
Mushrooms. and Fire Flowers make another triumphant return, yet the game
lacks the ever-so-fun Blue Shell and the super-destructive Mega Mushroom.
Novice players can go into a bubble and wait to be popped and freed until
after an expert playing partner clears a tricky part. You can do a little
back-stabbing with the new player-vs.-player game style… they kill you;
you kill ‘em right back! On the item storage screen, you obtain items by
playing a minigame in the Toad Houses to earn items. Gameplay elements
such as swinging grates and tilting platforms can be controlled by tilting
your Wii-mote. And here’s a woo-woo part… if you fail at a stage 8 times,
a new feature called the Super Guide will take over the game for you, so
you can sit back and get a snack while one of Nintendo’s staff does a recorded
run of the level… and it counts it as beaten when that CPU touches the
flagpole.
Graphics/Music-10/10
Beautiful graphics
compliment the new and remixed musics that abound in this game. The Koopalings
(along with Kamek) make their 3D debuts, and new remixes of classic songs
(such as Super Mario Bros. 3’s 1-1 theme) can be found within the levels.
This game sure will please eyes and ears alike!
OVERALL SCORE…
*Drum roll* 10/10!
Three words:
DESERVES. THIS. SCORE. This is definitely deserving of this score!
If you haven’t played it, do so immediately. It’ll be a decision
you won’t forget! Have fun with your friends and family with this newly-released
gem of a Wii game!
