I shall be reviewing on a scale of 1-10
again. So as Link would say: "Huh, Yeah, HYAH! .. Or maybe Mario: Here
we go!
Story: ~
None, so I can't rate this one. No points
added or taken away here. Next
Controls: 10/10
They work out perfectly. You can only use the GameCube and classic controllers. But I'm sure most of you are used to that by now. (You've all just played both Brawl and Melee with the GCN controller, so you're most likely used to it by now. Just like I said.) A is basic moves, B is specials, Y and X are jump or you can use the C-stick. Z is grab, R and L shield you, and the control stick is for moving. The controls on the classic controller are pretty much the EXACT same thing. Just study the 2 controllers and you'll see they're the same thing.
Graphics: 9.5/10
Greatness. I don't have all that many complaints considering that this was a budget title. Although I just can't get over the fact that all the Pokeball characters are sprites. And the items too. But again, a budget title. The only 3D issues are that when DK taunts, his face looks squished up a bit and slightly bird-like. Oh, but some of the great graphics are the skeletons when you're electrocuted. Those aren't in Melee or Brawl. Those skeletons are just great. And the expressions of the characters when they are beaten up or knocked down is priceless. Just priceless.
Sound: 10/10
Dang, the music is great. No flaws in
the songs at all. Now the sound effects themselves, they are great too.
Unlike in Melee and Brawl, the crowd sounds all pepped up. They're so excited
when the fighters get smacked away or make a great recovery; and they sound
like they're cheering a little more because for most fighters they say
GO (fighter’s name) *clap clap*. Sound like they are really into it. And
then the punching and kicking effects and everything is still used in today's
titles, so that says a lot considering this game was released over 10 years
ago. (And people say Melee is old.) So yeah. It's good.
Roster: 10/10
I feel weird about this. For a title that came out so long ago, it feels like the roster is perfect. But for newer titles, it's like you can't have ENOUGH characters. Yeah, it's weird. For SSB64, 12 people is enough. Here's the roster from the beginning (the first 8).
Mario
Donkey Kong
Link
Samus
Yoshi
Kirby
Fox McCloud
Pikachu
Not much, but for this game it's perfect. I guess it's that classic charm.
Oh, here's the stages too.
Peach's Castle
DK Jungle
Hyrule Castle
Planet Zebes
Yoshi's Island
Dreamland
Sector Z
Saffron City
Secrets: 4/10 (ouch) (WARNING SPOILERS!)
I unlocked all the characters in 2 sittings. I still have yet to unlock the secret stage, but will in due time. There’s not much to get besides 4 characters and a stage. There's also a sound test and item switch. But those aren't all that important. (I mean, why do I want to use a sound test? And I don't really care about the items.) So it doesn't do that well in terms of secrets.
All secrets:
Luigi
Captain Falcon
Ness
Jigglypuff
Mushroom Kingdom
Replayability: … Over... 9...THOUSAND! (10/10)
Memes aside, this game has a lot going
for it. What it lacks in secrets, it makes up for through the fact that
you'll want to play it a lot. And the board the platforms stage is fun,
unlike the tired Break the Targets. Although this game made that minigame,
so…. Anyway, go play the game.
Total Score: 53.5/60 54/60=90%: A minus
Recommendations and Final Words
Fans of Smash: GO BUY IT!
Fans of Fighters: GO BUY IT!
Fans of Mario: GO BUY IT!
Fans of Zelda: GO BUY IT!
Nintendo Fans in General: GO BUY IT!
I mean, it only costs 1,000 Wii points.
If you do the math that a 2,000 Wii points card costs 20 bucks, then obviously
1,000 points is 10 bucks. It's pretty cheap, so it's worth the buy. This
is a great game, it started Nintendo's legendary fighter series, and is
great for parties.
