Game & Watch Collection Review

By Ckday

Okay, first, let me get something out of the way. THIS IS NOT A GAME & WATCH GALLERY GAME!

Okay, now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to the Review. Game & Watch Collection is a compilation of three Game & Watch games (basically the original portable consoles) re-released on DS. However, like the game Electroplankton, you CANNOT BUY THIS IN A RETAIL STORE! OR A STORE AT ALL! You have to get this game specially from Nintendo. How? Through Club Nintendo. Club Nintendo is basically Nintendo’s way of thanking their fans, or, as Wikipedia (the free encyclopedia) says, a customer loyalty program run by Nintendo. To get coins, you register pin numbers found inside certain game cases, such as New Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, and other big-name games. WiiWare and DSiWare cannot be registered, but a week after downloading one or registering games, you can take a post play survey for 10 coins. Once registered, complete a survey for the game you registered for 30 coins (DS games) or 50 coins (Wii games, and I believe for a very few games, you can get more coins). You can then redeem coins for prizes, and for 800 coins, you can get Game & Watch Collection, which is the only game on the prize list. (By the way, if you are under 13, get someone who is older than 13 to create a Family Account and add YOU as a member. Only they can redeem coins, though.)

But anyway, enough about Club Nintendo. Now for the Review!

Story: n/a

… Do I have to say anything? DRAT! I just did!

Gameplay: 7

The point of this game is to simply compile 3 Game and Watch games (see Game & Watch Gallery Reviews for more info) into one DS cartridge.

In Oil Panic, you are the attendant in the Top Screen, collecting oil drops into your bucket, which can hold 3 drops. (This is where Mr. Game & Watch gets the bucket move seen in the Smash Bros. series from.) If you miss a drop or collect a drop with a full bucket, you get an oil miss. (You’ll see why I named it this.) To empty your bucket, head out the side of the Top Screen and onto the bottom screen, where you drop oil into the other attendant’s oil drum. If you spill oil on a customer filling gas, you get a customer miss. You can get 2 oil and 2 customer misses and stay in the game, so you get off lucky.

In Donkey Kong, you play an odd version of DK. You can only jump where there is room; if you hit a black beam, you lose a life, as you also will if you hit a barrel or fall from the Top Screen. To win, get to the top screen and at the switch, hit left to turn on the crane. Jump when it’s near to remove a hook. Get all 4 hooks to fell Donkey Kong. Miss the crane and you lose a life.

In Greenhouse, you press A to get rid of Inchworms (Top) and Spiders (Bottom) so they don’t eat your flowers. Lose a flower, lose a life.

In all three games, get a number ending with 300 (300, 1300, 2300, etc.) to remove a miss.

Levels: n/a

Secrets and Unlockables: n/a

There aren’t any.

Controls: 10

The controls are extremely simple. So simple, I don’t even have to say anything. DRAT! I said something again.

Graphics: 6

Sure, they ain’t comparing to NSMBW of Uncharted 2, but they have great charm, right?

Music & Sound: 7

The title screen music is pretty catchy, and the familiar BEEP! sounds good, but they get old after a while. The alarm can also get annoying. (By the way, the alarm is where Mr. Game & Watch gets his Smash Bros. taunt from.)

Characters: n/a

The actual game doesn’t feature characters really (other than Mario and DK), and the manual doesn’t help here. (The manual calls Mario ‘The Rescuer’.)

Difficulty: 5

Game A is the easy version and Game B is the hard version, and they can both get pretty hard, but once you dial it in your hands, the difficulty drops a bit.

Replayability: 6

These games practically revolve around replay, so it’s pretty good. But they’ll eventually get old…

Fun Factor!: 8

These can have some rounds where you can’t put the DS down, but they can also have really boring rounds. Personally, my favorite game is Donkey Kong.

Overall: 8

This game is pretty good. Considering the novelty, the ability to show it off (or brag, for you morons out there, no offence) and pure fun, it’s a good buy. And, with Club Nintendo, you can get some even better stuff! Maybe a bag to hold this and other DS games. Too bad you can’t register this game…

Next game I review: Dr. Mario Express
