Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story Review

By Ludwig X

Hello, everyone! Today, I'll be reviewing Bowser's Inside Story, the third installment in the Mario and Luigi series for the DS. I'll be rating the game on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest and 8 being the highest. 9 and 10 are just other numbers. No, really, you should know what's highest. Enough chit-chat! Let's-a get started with the Review…

Graphics:  9/10

I can hardly find anything wrong with the graphics. They surpass the other Mario & Luigi games by a significant amount. In some places the animation seems a bit out of place or choppy, but for the most part, I can't find anything wrong with them. Some of the best animations in the game are Bowser's; Nintendo did a wonderful job of putting him together. The enemies look good also, and their attack animation was pretty cool. All in all, it deserves a 9/10.

Audio:  9/10

Another  9/10. The sounds were awesome, as well as the voice effects. The music seemed a bit wacky at some points, and ALMOST not Mario. But they stayed in the boundaries. The audio actually might have been an 8/10 if it wasn't for the Pump Works song with Mario and Luigi. I can't help but go back to that point in the game and filling Bowser up with water just to listen to the song again. Toad Town is one-in-a-million also. It rivals Mario RPG for the best Toad Town song in my eyes.  Truly, Nintendo outdid themselves with the sound and music in this game.

Plot: 7/10

*Spoiler Warnings!*

Now the plot was pretty good. Fawful returning as the main villain was a good idea, but not quite great. Mario and Luigi are sucked into Bowser and spend more than half the game inside him. Nintendo did as good as they could at keeping this interesting, and did a nice job. It got pretty boring at times though, like looking for the Star Cures in the same place… for about four straight hours. Anyway, Mario and Luigi eventually find a way out of Bowser. (Completely beside the point, but it just doesn't make sense having a pipe inside Bowser leading to Toad Town. It would hurt. And be unnatural.) After that, Bowser and Mario & Luigi are able to split up and work on things together but still without ever seeing each other (with the exceptions of their battles with each other). Eventually (and I'm skipping a lot), the Dark Star is awakened, and gets swallowed by Bowser. To make a long story short, he takes on the form of Dark Bowser, and the final battle begins. I liked the plot, but it's not near perfect.

Gameplay: 8/10

The gameplay was great. It consisted of a normal RPG feel, but also platforming challenges with Mario and Luigi. I liked the battling and the enemies. The difficulty was a bit off, though, as in some places you can breeze through in one try, while others may keep you stumped for up to a week. (But that never happened to me. Oh no. I'm too good.) Not too much more to say here, which makes this a short and sweet section, with an 8/10 rating.

Characters: 10/10

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their personalities throughout the game. The addition of Midbus was a great move. I loved him! When I saw the preview of the game, I was excited to see a large, hefty character that looked cool. (No, I'm not six years old.) Starlow was pretty cool as well. She had a well-developed personality, and was the joke-cracker through most of the game. She almost beats Stuffwell, from the second Mario & Luigi game. But, of course, you just can't top 'Happies!'

In this game, we got to see more of Bowser. He was just like I always imagined him to be. He still kept the Mario RPG personality that everyone loves. Mario and Luigi are the same, the timid little brother and the brave big brother that fight for justice. Overall, the characters in this game must be perfect. Any bad thing would just be covered up by a good one in this game.

Replay Value: 4/10

Not so good… If only they would have added cheats and a post-story. All you really get to do after you beat the final boss is go around training… for nothing. Challenge Node, (not Mode, I'm not going crazy yet) is sorta fun, but after you whip Bowser X (like me!) there's not much left to do. I enjoyed leveling Mario, Luigi and Bowser up for a while, but after the levels rolled past 55… then 60… it got boring. I think it's pretty safe to say you're not going to pick this up and play it anytime soon after you've beaten the game… And it would have been near perfect…

Fun Factor!: 8/10

I had a large amount of fun playing the game through. At times I laughed, at times… well, I didn't really cry. You'll have fun with the game too, I'm sure. Yeah, some parts are long and boring, but you get a big reward.

Overall: 7.8

I highly recommend this game to any Mario fan. It really is great. Spend 35 bucks on it new, or if you're broke you can buy it used for about 10. Well, the game has it's downfalls, but I can guarantee that you'll thank me once you buy it.
