Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 Comparison

By Acekissy

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I’m just going to call them 1 and 2) are both amazing games. But which one is better? We will soon find out! I will rate these games out of 5: 1 being awful, 2 being Nintendo could do better, 3 being ok, 4 being better than standard, and 5 being amazing. I know what you’re thinking, stop blabbing and start reviewing! Which is what I’m going to do!

Graphics:
1: 5/5
2: 5/5
Both of the Super Mario Galaxies are amazing in the graphic category. This is the one series I have no complaints with, graphics-wise.

Story:
1: 4.5/5
2: 3/5
Both of these games lost a point because of the fact it’s the same storyline for every game. Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario saves her… The second MG (Mario Galaxy) lost a point because of the fact that Rosalina was barely in it at all. She gets 1 cameo and is that little walkthrough person if you get stuck. Instead of an awesome princess, we get a big purple star who we learn nothing about. In MG1 we learn about Rosalina and who she is. That extra storyline gave MG1 another .5, I enjoyed learning about her so much.

Characters
1: 3/5
2: 2.5/3
I must say I was rather disappointed with the characters in these stories. The bosses were fun, and if they weren’t so creative with the enemies I probably would have given these both 1’s. I was disappointed that Rosalina wasn’t in MG2, as I explained above. Come on, Nintendo, we all know you can do better.

Music/Sound Effects
1: 5.5/5
2: 5.5/5
I LOVE THE MUSIC THAT NINTENDO HAS CREATED! It’s so catchy, I was humming these tunes all month! The Mario series is known for cool music, and I think that the Mario Galaxy series is the icing on the cake. Or the Starbits on the star cake. I had to give it 5.5 because it was better than perfect. The levels and the music match, scary during boss battles, fun during tropical levels, and there are songs that make your heart race when you are in a place where you don’t know what’s going to come next.

Controls:
1: 3/5
2: 3/5
The controls are the same between the two games, and I find that in both games the controls can be rather… glitchy. It also takes a very long time to master all these controls. I tried to teach my friend how to play once, and she didn’t get it. I tried with a different friend and he didn’t get it either.  That’s not exactly a good sign.

Gameplay/Levels
1: 4/5
2: 5/5
A perfect score! I love these levels. And the music suits them perfectly! Anyway, these levels are creative and fun. I loved seeing all the different galaxies.  I never knew what was coming next. But there are a few problems. Sometimes it’s hard to reach ledges, and it’s almost hard to find where you need to go, which can be very frustrating when you’re on a time limit. I have screamed at my pillow because i couldn’t get up a ledge… only to figure out there was another way. This is mainly in the first Mario Galaxy.

Power-ups
1: 4/5
2: 5/5
There are a few differences in the items, but overall both games impressed me. In Super Mario galaxy 1 I liked the bee suit, but it often didn’t take me as high as I hoped. The main problem with Super Mario Galaxy 1 is that my favorite item, which was almost limitless, was only found In one place, the ship. NOT COOL! In Super Mario Galaxy 2, I loved the boulder power-up. It was rather hard to control, but super fun. I gave MG2 an extra point because it was easier to use items, they were more fun, and there was more of them.

Difficulty:
1: 3/5
2: 4/5
I admit, these were a little too hard in some places and a little too easy in others. In MG1, getting 60 Stars is easy, getting the rest is really hard. And then having to do it all over again? Please! In MG2 the whole idea of the Green Stars thing kinds of annoys me. I died 4 times to get there, now I have to do it again?! In both games, however, I like the gradual increase in difficulty. I didn’t get too stuck or make it through the level too fast (for the most part…) It helped me increase my skill more quickly.

Replayability:
1: 2.5/5
2: 2.5/5
After you finish these, you have to do them all over again, either getting Green Stars or with Luigi, just to get one more level. That really annoys me. After you do that, well, there’s really no point to doing it all over again. Like, come on, Nintendo! You always seem to fall short in this category, and the Mario Galaxy series is no exception.

Fun…ness? Funibility? Any way..
1: 5/5
2: 5/5
These are so fun, you’ll get hooked as soon as you play. I guarantee it. This category has the Acekissy seal of approval!

Overall:
1: 5/5
2: 4.5/5
I would recommend buying MG1 before MG2 because you just get a better Mario Galaxy experience. MG2 fell short in too many places, unfortunately.  It’s still an amazing game, but MG1 just barely beats MG2, by just a hair.
