Super Mario Advance Review

By Lord Seth

Genre: Action

Platform: Game Boy Advance

It may seem strange that I have reviewed Super Mario Advance 2 before this one, but that's life! Because I have never played the original Super Mario Bros. 2, I shall not be comparing this game to that in the same way that  I compared Super Mario Advance 2 to Super Mario World. This will be out of 5 stars (I wish I didn't have to say that each time!).

Graphics: *** 1/2

The graphics WERE great, but now with  things like Golden Sun and Super Mario Advance 2, this game pales by comparison.

Sound and Music: ** 1/2

None of the music is especially good, but most of it isn't that bad. The voices will sometimes get on your nerves, but that's really only if you're using Peach or Toad.

Replayability: *** 1/2

You can always play someone at Mario Brothers, or try to get all the Ace Coins, or try to beat the Yoshi Challenge, but there's not infinite replayability.

Fun Factor!: ***

It's pretty fun, but it just doesn't have that Mario "feel". Then again, it is just a copy of another game... though it's legal because Nintendo had permission.

Controls: *****

No problems here. The buttons do simple things, and there are no complexities.

Genre Comparision: ** 1/2

As far as action games go, this isn't too bad. However, as far as Mario games go, this game isn't that good, earning it two stars and a half.

Mario Brothers: ***

Sorry I forgot to mention this in my SMA2 Review! Mario Brothers is pretty fun, and the Battle Mode's sweet  I would have given this three and a half, but they have this same thing in SMA2. At first I was happy, because it means I could finally link up with other people. Then I realized that they probably didn't even need SMA2 to link up with. If you want to play a friend at this, they must have Super Mario Advance OR Super Mario Advance 2. However, in Bomberman Tournament, you can play against someone even if they don't have Bomberman Tournament! Why, then, would you need two cartridges? I'm no expert on electronics, but I'm quite sure that if you can do that sort of thing on Bomerman Tournament, you can do it here. Why couldn't they put something else on SMA2, and only need one game pack to play Mario Brothers against a friend (or friends)?

Overall: ***

Definitely not as good as Super Mario Advance 2. This game is worth a look, but doesn't have that good ol' Mario  thrill. I think they should have skipped this completely and instead remade Super Mario World as Super Mario Advance.

Recommendation:

This game is OK. Not the best, but not the worst. It was a waste of time to remake, but it's almost worth buying if you don't mind the non-Mario gameplay.
