Sonic Advance Review

Scoring: Note: All categories will be marked out of 10.

Story: 5

There really isn't much story to the game, however this is how it goes: Dr Eggman (Robotnik) has the seven elusive Chaos Emeralds and is using them to create a robot army, and it's up to Sonic and his buddies to win them back and stomp on Eggman.

Graphics: 8

The backgrounds were nice and colorful and the characters looked similar to the Sonic Adventure games.

Music: 8

The music was pretty good and contained some classic Sonic music (if you're a Sonic fan go to the option screen and you will hear a song from Sonic's old days). I can't really think of a track that I really hated.

Characters: 10

Well there's four (sort of five but the fith is a secret) characters that are playable so full marks, also each character has his or her own special skills (unlike Super Mario Advance where they just possess different stats). Here is a list of the characters:

Sonic: Sonic is the fastest thing on two legs and is the best choice for beginners. He can grind and do somersaults as well as jumping and the classic "Super Sonic Spin".

Miles "Tails" Prower: Tails is good for finding those hard to find special stage springs. He can use his two tails to fly and by pressing B he does a tail swipe. He can also pull off the Super Sonic Spin.

Knuckles: Knuckles can glide and scale walls and, like Tails, can punch by pressing B.

Amy: Amy is probably the hardest character to use as her jump (unlike the rest) can't kill enemies, instead she uses her "Piko Piko" hammer to bring justice.

???: I won't give anything away by telling you who this character is but to use him complete the game with every other character and get all the Chaos Emeralds, then beat "X Zone" again with Sonic.

Items: 9

There's plenty of items, such as the needed rings, shields, extra lives, and ring boxes.

Difficulty: 6

Not quite Final Fantasy VIII but for a Sonic game I say it's okay. Completing it with all the characters is rather easy but finding the special stage springs and getting the Chaos Emeralds is quite difficult.

Replayability: 9

Fortunately there's more to the game than the story mode, there's also time trials, tiny chao garden, and three vs modes. That should keep you occupied for a while.

The Vs Modes: Here I have scored the three vs modes.

Collect the Rings: 7

Not too exciting but unlike the other two this can be played with only one Sonic Advance.

Chao Hunt: 9

In this game you and your opponent must search the stage for the Chao. If only the levels were bigger.

Race: 10

My favorite, race your mate through a number of levels and use certain items to achieve victory.

Gameplay: 10

The idea of four characters is nice as are the different things to do, all equal a good game.

Fun Factor!: 9

My favorite platform for the Gameboy Advance, but I haven't played Mario Advance 2.

Recommendation: I would recommend the game to people who enjoy platformers, even if you're not a Sonic fan. However if you're exceptionally good at games you may want to wait for its price to fall as it is easy to complete.
