The KTCG Mushroom Kingdom Tournament

Rainbo Yoshi

Episode One: The Notification

This story starts in Lemmy’s room. He, Larry, Iggy, and Susan are playing Super Smash Bros. Melee. Suddenly, Bowser’s voice barks: “Ludwig! Susan! Get your shells down here!”

Thinking she was in trouble, Susan made her way down to Bowser’s throne room, where the Koopa King awaited her. Moments after, Ludwig arrived, his face gray and his hair blown backwards. “What the?”

“Well, King Dad, you startled me, and I was making a delicate potion… I guess you know what happens next.”

“…Right. Anyway, I called you two down here because I have another plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, but I’ll need help. Ludwig, do you have a Bob-Omb maker that runs on cheese?”

“Uh…no. W-why?”

“Just asking.”

“Hello? Does anyone remember I’m here?” Susan said.

“Oh yeah. Anyways, here’s the plan.”

Meanwhile, at Mario’s Pad...

“Zzz…wow, that is the largest bowl of spaghetti I have ever seen! …zzz…”

“Hey, big bro! The mail just arrived! Looks like someone sent us a card game box.”

“…I’ll be right there, Luigi.” Mario got up out of bed, put his cap on, and ran into the wall before finally finding the door.

“Took you long enough.” He starts reading the box. “‘Koopa Trading Card Game’. Look, bro. It comes with two decks. One is marked “Luigi” and one is marked “Mario”.”

“What’s for breakfast?”

“Are you even listening?”

Meanwhile, at Peach’s Castle...

“Princess, the mail has arrived. Here is a package for you,” Toad said.

“It’s opened already.”

“Oh, well, I opened it just in case Bowser put rabid Goombas in it or something.”

“‘Koopa Trading Card Game…’ Look, Toad. It comes with two decks. One for me and one for you.”

“What? But I’m busy serving you, Princess.”

“And I order you to play! Besides, this one is labeled “Toad”.”

“Well, okay. Ooh. I got my new Mushroom Magazine Monthly!”

Meanwhile, at Yoshi’s House...

Yoshi pulled a box out of a package that came with the mail. He pulled out the two decks. The second one was labeled “Extra. Give it to whoever.” Packages such as these were delivered to Wario’s Castle, Daisy’s Castle, and Donkey Kong’s house. A letter also came with all of them.

“Dear sir or madam,

"We have sent you a box including two decks of the Koopa Trading Card Game, a playmat, and a rulebook. A KTCG tournament will be held four weeks from now. You have all the time in between to practice. We also included two (2) booster packs of the KTCG, including one Alpha Edition booster pack and one Conquest booster pack. You may add cards from these packs to the deck we sent you, provided you still have exactly 70 cards in it when you’re finished. The tournament will be held at the Mushroom Kingdom. The registration desk and additional information will be at Toad Town Central. Your deck contains cards not found in the two sets mentioned above. To gain cards from these sets, there will be KTCG stores opening up at the tournament sites."

Episode Two: Practice

In Castle Koopa, the eight royal Koopas and Susan were discussing their plan further.

“And that is the plan. Any questions?” said Bowser.

“Yeah”, replied Morton. “I like cheese.”

“That’s not even a question! Now, any ACTUAL questions? Good. Let’s get this started.”

Just then, a line of Troopas came into the room, led by a Paratroopa. “King Bowser, that stupid plumber, Mario, is not biting our bait. In fact, he’s biting something else.”

“What?! Bring Boo in here, pronto!” At that moment, the ghost known as Boo appeared in the middle of the throne room. “Boo, use that crystal ball of yours to show me what’s going on with Mario!”

“Yes, your majesty.” The crystal ball had loads of light reflecting off of it. It was a blinding sight.

“Fool! You polished that thing way too many times!”

Meanwhile at Mario’s...

“Hehe. Look, Luigi. This card has a picture of a mushroom.” Mario bit the card.

“Mario, Wendy was right. That cap is cutting off the circulation to your brain. Besides, don’t we need to be practicing this new game?”

“Oh yeah. Set it up while I get popcorn.”

“(grumble) Fine. You’ll go first.”

“I agree.”

*

“Look, your majesty! Mario finally decided to play!” Boo said, holding one of his other crystal balls… that isn’t polished.

“Bwahahaha! How are our other guests doing?”

Boo then waved his arm and the image on the ball changed to show the Princess and Toad.

*

“I win,” said Toadstool.

“A-again?! How do you do it?”

“Either they sent me a good deck, or I’m just good at this." She winked. "Want to play again?”

“Um… I’m sure they sent decks to the Mario brothers. Why don’t you go play them?”

“Good idea, Toad.” On her way out, she bumped into Toadsworth.

“Princess? Where are you going?”

“To Mario and Luigi’s house to play the KTCG with them.”

“Why don’t you play against me?”

“…You have a deck?”

“Yes, I received one in the mail today.”

“Fine with me!”

Five minutes later...

“I win!”

Back at Castle Koopa...

“Holy cow! She kicks butt!” commented Larry.

“Either that or those mushroom-heads are idiots. Say, only being able to watch is boring. Who wants to play?” Wendy said.

Lemmy said, “You’re on!” They set it up.

“Ahem. Minion! Show me what the dinosaur and his mystery sparring partner are up to.”

“*sigh* Yes, your majesty.”

 *

“[Wanna play KTCG, Rex?]”

“[What’s that?]”

“[A card game they sent me in the mail. It’s cool.]”

“[Okay… but you’re gonna lose!]”

 *

“Err… guys, I don’t understand a word those dinosaurs are saying,” said Larry.

“Who cares? Let’s just watch,” replied Iggy, who was paying more attention to the game than to Larry.

 *

15 minutes later...

“[Agh! But… it’s not… this isn’t… you must have cheated!]” said Rex, defeated, 8 to 7.

“[Better luck next time, Rex. You get to keep the deck, by the way.]”

 *

“Yoshi is good too! We just might -” started Iggy.

“- get our butts kicked! …Which we won’t,” continued Lemmy. “We won’t lose to them.”

Episode Three: The Beginning

Four weeks later… Everyone was getting ready. Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Rex, and Donkey and Diddy Kong were riding separate airplanes to Toad Town. Daisy decided not to come. She gave the first deck to the first guy she met, and the second was mailed to Toadsworth for some reason.

“Bwahahaha! The tournament is about to begin. Those unsuspecting sheep don’t even know we’re behind it!” The King of the Koopas said.

“Um…sir? There’s nobody here. I came here because I heard you talking,” said a Koopa Troopa nervously.

“Uh… Be quiet! Get back to work!”

Meanwhile at Toad Town Central:

“Well, we’re registered. That guy said there would be four tournament sites. One is Goomba Village (and Goomba Road), the second is Pleasant Path and Koopa Village, the third is Forever Forest, and the last one is in Toad Town Tunnels. Toad Town is also a place for our tournament needs,” Mario said.

“Bro, you just repeated everything the guy said! And for what? I already know.”

“I’m telling the readers.”

“Oh…right.”

A Koopa Troopa came to the Central and said on his microphone, “Attention all tournament participants! The tournament is about to begin! You were each given a letter at the registration desk. Open it, and you will find a note that assigns you to a tournament site. Also inside is a random rare card from the special set, the same set the unique cards in your decks belong to. To advance onto the finals, you have to defeat three other participants in the same site, and then defeat the boss. If, however, you lose twice, you’ll be disqualified. Good luck, everyone! Now get your butts over to your assigned sites!” Then the turtle packed his microphone and fled.

“Hmm. I’ll be battling in the Koopa Village area. How about you, Luigi?”

“Goomba Village. Good luck, brother. See you in the finals… If you can get there.”

“I will.”

Then they heard Peach yelling. “I’m going to Forever Forest?! This is absurd! I’ll get my dress ruined in that place for sure!”

“Tch. You think your experience will be messy? I’m going to the tunnels, Princess,” replied Toad.

“Yeah, well, let’s just get this show on the road.”

“[I’m going to Koopa Village too! I’ll see you there, lifelong friend.]”

“Right you are, Yoshi.”

Then everyone goes to their sites.

“Wow! There’s a lot of people here!” Mario and Yoshi marveled at the crowdedness of Koopa Village. A few people had already started battling.

Then, a Koopa wearing a yellow shell and red wristbands walked up to Mario. “Hey, Mario! Do you want to battle me?”

“Mama-mia! Okay. (I hope I’m ready)”

“[Good luck, Mario. I’ll see who I can find for my battle.]”

“Okay, Yoshi.”

Then a green warp pipe protruded from the ground and out came another Koopa, this one with a black and white shell. He then spoke in a shockingly loud voice. “Hello, contestants. I’m the referee for this match. Don’t mind me. I’ll just, like, be here and stuff. By the way, you’re live.”

A Lakitu with a camera popped out of the pipe.

“What? But I’m-a-wearing my worst overalls today!”

“Who cares? Battle start!”

“I go first, Mario. I’ll start by placing my Yellow Koopa (Ground type, 30 HP) in Underground Land, and equipping it with a Ground Energy. Your turn.”

“Oh… kay. I’ll play-a-my Bob-Omb Buddy (Lightning type, 50 HP) in Ice Land. And - (uh oh… I don’t have any Energy cards in my hand!) Erm… It’s-a-your turn.”

(Score: M1/Y1)

“Heh. Fine. I’ll draw a card. Then I’ll play a Microgoomba in Underground Land, then have it take over Sky Land. I’ll also place a Foundation in Sky Land. Your turn.”

“I’ll draw. Then I’ll play two Chain Chomps in Ice Land, then use one of them to take over Pipe Land. Then I’ll play a Spell card, Energy Scouts. It allows me to pick up a number of cards from my deck equal to-a-the number of Minions I have in play. If any of them are Energies, I can attach them to any of-a-my Minions. So, I’ll pick up three cards.”

“… And?”

“Two Energies. I’ll attach one to each of my Chomps. Now I’ll attack. Chain Chomp, use Tied Down on his Yellow Koopa.”

(L Tied Down-Flip a coin.  If heads, no Minions in the adjoining land you are attacking can move during your opponent's next turn.)

“Mama mia… I don’t have a coin.”

The ref then popped in suddenly. “Here you go!” He handed him a coin.

Mario flipped it. “Heads!”

“Oh well… I wasn’t planning on moving my Koopa anyway."

(Score: M3/Y3)

"Now it’s my turn, since you attacked. I’ll evolve my Microgoomba into a Goomba, then play two Ground Energies on my Koopa. Now I’ll have it use Shell Attack! That’s 20 damage to your Chomp!”

“Ah no. Well, now that it’s-a-my turn again, I’ll play another Lightning Energy on my Chain Chomp in Pipe Land and have it use Chomp, which does 20 damage to your Koopa.”

(Score: M3/Y3)

“Heh. That was a very bad move. I’ll give my Koopa another Ground Energy, then play Buster Beetle and move it to Sky Land, then have my Goomba take over Dark Land.”

“Mama mia! I should’ve thought of that!”

“Heh. That’s not all. I’ll play Gun Tower on my Sky Land Foundation, just in case. Plus, since you attacked my Yellow Koopa and it still has HP left, it can use a new attack. Hyper Shell Attack! That’s 40 damage to your Chomp, and it’s Knocked Out.”

Just then, Yoshi came back. “[Mario, have you finished your battle yet? I’m looking for an opponent but no one understands me. Could you translate?]”

“I’m not done yet, Yoshi. Just hold on. Okay, Yellow. I’ll play Super Koopa in Ice Land, then move my Bob-Omb Buddy to reclaim Pipe Land for me, then my other Chain Chomp will take over Giant Land. Now I’ll attach two Lightning Energies to-a-my Chomp and attack your-a-Goomba! It has 30 HP left now. Back to you.”

(Score: M5/Y6)

“I’ll play the Spell card Mushroom. I couldn’t afford my precious Koopa to be Knocked Out, now could I? Next, I’ll have my Yellow Koopa attack with Shell Attack, since it can’t use its Hyper Attack now that it’s healed. Your Bob-Omb Buddy is down to 30 HP.”

“Hmm… You made the same mistake I did!”

“Huh? … Ah oh. Your Bob-Omb Buddy also has an attack increase?!”

“Correct-a! Now I’ll-a-equip my BOB with two Lightning Energies and use Kamikaze Blast, which destroys both your Koopa and my Bomb. It’s your turn."

(Score: M3/Y5)

“Then I’ll play…”

“Stop! I’ll play another Spell card, Reinforcements. It allows the owners of any Minions Knocked Out last turn to play any Basic Minion from their hand to the same land the Minions were Knocked Out in. Also, I can play it during your-a-turn. So, I’ll play Dolphin in Pipe Land (Water type, 60 HP)!”

“And I’ll play Super Koopa in Underground Land!”

Then Yoshi popped in. “[So, do I have a line or what?]”

“… Ahem. Now I’ll evolve my Goomba into a Paragoomba. If you were hoping to take over Dark Land, forget it. It will take a while to defeat an 80 HP Minion. I have no Energy for my Minions, so I can’t attack now. Go.”

“I’ll play-a-my Spell card, Minion Catapult. It allows me to toss one of my Minions to hit-a-any target, causing 30 damage to both our Minions. So, I’ll throw Chain Chomp at-a-your Buster Beetle! 50 HP left! My Chomp returns to Giant Land, by the way. Your go.”

(Score: M5/Y6)

“I’m tired. Can’t we continue next chapter?”

“Okey-dokey.”

Episode Four: Unpleasant News

The score is Mario- 5, Yellow Koopa- 6. It’s Yellow’s turn.

Yellow: I’ll draw -

Ref: Hold on! I forgot something important. This match is timed. Mario has 5 minutes left to make a comeback.

Mario: Aw man.

Yellow: *ahem* I’ll play two Ground Energies on my Paragoomba and have my Koopa attack your, er, Koopa. Shell Attack! Your Koopa is just barely hanging on!

Mario: I’ll evolve-a my Super Koopa into a Water Koopa! Now it has more-a HP! Plus, I’ll-a give it two Water Energies to use Shell Attack! Say goodbye to your-a Koopa! (Score: M5/Y5)

Yellow: Well that’s no good. Okay… I’ll play Magmite (Ground type, 80 HP) in Underground Land. That’s... all for now, I guess. It’s your turn.

Mario: Whoa… That thing is a Basic Minion?!

*Yoshi is seen trying to talk to people.*

[Yoshi]: Mario, be a pal. I translated for you in Yo'ster Isle, remember?

Mario: *sigh* Fine.

Ref: Not so fast! You have to finish the match first or you lose!

Mario: Sorry, Yosh. Okay, I’ll give-a my Koopa another Water Energy and play another Super Koopa, then have-a my Chomp invade Grass Land. I’ll attack your Magmite with my Koopa’s Wave. Um… Ref? Can I borrow that-a coin again? (Mmm… Coin.)

Ref: Sure. Three minutes left, by the way.

Mario: *flips the coin* Heads! Yay! That means my attack does 50 damage!

(Score: M6/Y6)

Yellow: It still has HP left. You overlooked one thing, though.

Mario: What’s-a that?

Yellow: My Paragoomba. I’ll give it another Ground Energy and have it use Flying Tackle. That’s 30 HP from your Water Koopa. Your turn.

Mario: I’ll play a Mushroom to heal my Koopa, then I’ll play yet another Super Koopa, move it to Grass Land, then have Chain Chomp invade Desert Land! Next, I’ll have my Water Koopa finish off Magmite! Shell Attack! (Score: M8/Y5)

Ref: One minute!

Yellow: Uh oh. Think, Yellow, think. Got it! I’ll play the Spell, Fire Flower. That powers up my next attack by 20. Then I’ll play two Super Koopas, move one to Sky Land, and have Buster Beetle take over Water Land. Next, I’ll use Paragoomba’s Flying Tackle plus the boost from Fire Flower to KO your Water Koopa. Your turn!

Ref: Stop! Time up! This match… ends in a tie?

Mario and Yellow: So what happens?

Ref: How should I know?

Mario: You’re the referee!

Ref: Well, just flip a coin or something.

Mario: *flips coin* I call-a tails!

Ref: Heads!
