Character Unlockables
Yes, I know unlockables isn’t a word.
Character 1: Mario
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Medium
To unlock Mario, you have to get 8 Stars and go into the Rec Room. That’s the room behind the room with the all the locked doors. There should be a door there that takes that many Stars to open. When you get there, you should see a giant picture of Mario. Well, I shouldn’t have to tell you this, but jump in it. You should be transported to a world of wood and poison gas. Slide straight down from your current position and run up to the Piranha Plant dead ahead. Beat the Plant and the Lakitu (it may help to eat the Lakitu and use the egg to hit the Piranha Plant) and climb up the vine. From there head up the steep bridge, keeping an eye out for Goombas. Keep going until you find a giant hole in a giant tree. Guess what? Jump in.
Boss Battle: Goomboss. Down there you’ll meet the Goomboss, a Goomba baring a striking resemblance to the Goomba King of Paper Mario. He’ll tell you how he’s sick of being stomped and that he locked up Mario. Then he’ll try to chase you down. Hold down that Dash button and run around the circle until you’re behind him. You may be able to flutter jump over the toxic gas in the middle too. When behind him, you’ll see a bunch of regular Goombas. Eat one and fire an egg at Goomboss. He’ll get bigger and faster with each hit, but it only takes three hits to defeat him anyway.
Character 2: Luigi
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Easy
This threw me for a loop for a while. Remember in the original game there was a stone in the courtyard that said L is real 2041 or something to that extent? Well, anyway, Luigi’s in Big Boo’s Haunt, the level you access from the Courtyard. In there, go up to the second floor and enter the leftmost door. You should see a Power Block. Hit it and turn into Balloon Mario. Float up to a small alcove above and enter the door. There should be a painting of Luigi. Jump in and you’ll land in a room. Turn up the volume on your DS and you’ll hear a familiar laugh. If your speakers aren’t on stereo, do that beforehand, because that laugh is the key. Go to each of the four doors in the rooms and listen if the laughing is farther or closer. The right door will lead you to the next room, the wrong one will send you back to the start. But since this is a guide I’ll give you a hint of which doors to use. When you enter, go to the door to your direct left (straight across from you if you were sent back). From that room, go into the middle and go to the room at the direct right from your entry point. Don’t bother with the Mr I. At that point enter the door to your direct left. Watch out for the false floor in the middle platform! That door should take you to a room with floating platforms. Ride the platforms until you’re at the door right of your starting point. Then, run across the shaky bridge and up the platforms. Jump into the hole.
Boss Battle: Big Boo: Long jump into the mirror and your reflection will turn into Luigi! Then Big Boo will fade out of the shadows, only now he looks a LOT like King Boo. To beat him, you must get around to his backside and punch him, like the other Big Boos. Watch both sides of the mirror, because Boo may switch sides on you. There are coins on the side to heal you. Three hits and Luigi’s key is yours.
Character 3: Wario
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Hard!
When you beat the second Bowser, go up to the room with all the mirrors. If you enter as Luigi you should see Power Flowers. Take one and go through the mirror, then jump into the painting that looks like Wario. Jump in and be transported to a snowy world. You can try to hit the Bullies if you want, but they aren’t important. Follow the platforms until you get to a split in the path. Stick to the right unless you already got Wario and you want a Star. From there, jump off and go past the freezing pond. Go through to the Bullies and navigate the giant floating platforms. Only jump when you’re sure you can make it. From there, jump up the side of the hill and drop down yet another hole.
Boss Battle: Chief Chilly. This guy
is a little worked up on his mustache, but he’s no pushover either. (In
fact, he might push YOU over. Ha ha… yeah.) A strong attack is the jump
kick, just repeatedly jump and kick him until he falls over the edge. He’ll
break off parts of the platform whenever you hit him over, so run to the
middle after hitting him over. After two knock-offs, he’ll get really mad.
Also, when he’s about to fall off for the last time, he’ll wobble at the
edge and regain balance. At this point, a kick will knock him over but
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DIVE HIM OFF! This will result in you losing
health as he gives his parting failure speech, and you won’t make it back
in time to get the key. Quickly walk up to him and make sure you’re fully
stopped. Then jump kick him. Congratulations, you now have all the characters!
Course 1: Bob-omb Battlefield
This was once a peaceful meadow before
Bowser waged war in it. Now, it’s the black Bob-ombs vs. the pink ones.
Which side are you with? (Note: You’re with the pink side.)
Star 1: Big Bob-omb on the Summit.
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Very Easy
This Star isn’t that hard if you know where to go. First, rise up the wooden hill and go past the Chomp. If you eat a Goomba and throw the egg at the Chomp, it’ll be frozen for a little while. After that, you just cut across the active battlefield and to the sign with the large arrow on it (there’s a reason it’s there). Travel across the summit with the rolling balls and travel up the spiraling hill.
Boss Battle: Big Bob-omb. In the original, all you had to do was throw him around. However, Yoshi isn’t too good at picking up things, so what to do? Luckily, Big Bob-omb throws out bombs for you to eat and throw at him. Isn’t that nice?
Star 2: Footrace with Koopa the Quick
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Easy
You can see Koopa the Quick from the start, so go over to him. He’ll ask you where Mario is, and when you find him tell him to come over. But you probably haven’t unlocked Mario, huh? So, what you do is look at your touchpad map and find Mario’s cap. When you put it on you gain Mario’s appearance and abilities (not the voice though) as long as you don’t get hurt. Walk over to KTQ (Koopa the Quick) and he’ll challenge you to a race. Oblige and he’ll start running. Follow the directions from the first Star to get up to the top of the mountain before KTQ. If you fell behind somehow, there’s a teleportation point at the first alcove in the hill when you go up the hill. If you stand still at the right spot you’ll end up inches from the top. Also, if you really don’t feel like running past the Chomp, there’s a teleportation point in the clove of flowers to the right of the bridge at the start. It will teleport you to the clove of flowers near the valley with the rolling balls. Beat KTQ to the goalpost and claim your Star.
Star 3: 5 Silver Stars
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Zzz…
When you touch ground at the Battlefield, look at your map. You should see five Silver Stars scattered across the level. Go to where they are and collect them. Some may be in Goombas, while others may be on top of trees or bouncing freely. When you see the Chomp romping around, stun him with a Yoshi egg and steal the Star on its chain. If you take damage, you’ll lose a Star and have to chase after it. Once you get all of them, return to the start of the level and you should see a Power Star in the crystal.
Star 4: Big Bob-omb’s Revenge
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Medium
You shouldn’t try this until you’ve unlocked Mario. Jump into the painting as Mario and follow the instructions from before to reach the top. I’ll review for those too lazy to look.
-Up the wooden beam.
-Past the Chomp (be careful)
-To the arrow sign
-Across the summit of rolling cannonballs
-Up the spiral hill
There, aren’t I nice? What do you mean cut the sarcasm, I really meant that!
Boss Battle: Big Bob-omb. He finally realized those Bob-ombs were doing more harm than good and stopped throwing them. To beat him, you have to get around him and pick him up from his back, like you’ll have to do to Bowser. This would be a good time to try out using the touch pad as a control stick, because it’s really hard to hold down the dash button and press A.
Star 5: Mario Wings to the Sky
Recommended Character: Mario (must
have unlocked red box)
Difficulty: Hard
You should waste no time with this Star. First, if you haven’t already done this, is to talk to the pink Bob-omb (a Bob-omb Buddy) near the cannon to have him open the canons on the level. Next, get to the hill and run up it until you find a cannon to launch out of. Look for a floating island and blast to it. When you get there, hit the box and get the feather. Hop into the cannon and blast yourself out at the rings of gold coins. There are five coins in the middle of each ring, and getting all those will trigger the Star. You’ll probably have to blast yourself many times, so don’t give up. The trick is to aim a bit higher than the coin you want to get. If it looks like it’s too high, blast yourself as high as you can and then fly back for it with the Wing Cap.
Star 6: 8 Red Coins
Recommended character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Medium
This may be tough to understand, so I’ll try to explain the best I can.
Coin 1: To the side of the beam you
always climb up are two floating platforms. I confess, you could have used
them all this time, but it’s a lot of work. There’s a red coin at the top
of the two.
Coin 2: To the right of Chomps room
is a stony field of Goombas and a Koopa Troopa. There’s a red coin on the
highest protruding rock.
Coin 3: Had a nice life? Good, because
the next red coin is on the wooden post of the Chain Chomp. If you hurry
you may be able to get it unnoticed, or you can stun him first…
Coins 4 and 5: There are two red coins
to the left of the battlefield beyond the Chomp’s room. Notice a Star’s
shadow while you’re there.
Coin 6: This one’s hard to explain.
At the sign with the arrow, you’ll notice that you can go down a hill behind
it. Go down there to find a red coin, a 1-Up mushroom, and a switch to
open the bars between the start of the level and the battlefield.
Coin 7: Before you cross the summit
with the rolling cannonballs, look around and you’ll notice a red coin
all the way up the hill. By holding R and moving up the hill slowly, you
should be able to reach it.
Coin 8: Remember that floating island
from before? Remember the red coin at the top of the tree? Well then what
do you need me for?
When you get all of them, a Star will appear out of the Star shadow near where you got the fourth and fifth coins. Nab it!
Star 7: Behind Chain Chomp’s gate
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Easy
If you’re impatient, you can use Yoshi and stun the Chomp, but it’s more fun to wait for Luigi. When you’re Luigi, go to the red box under the plank and get the power star. Quickly run up to the Chain Chomp and start ground pounding his post. He’ll try to attack you, but he can’t get to you. If you’re another character, you’ll have to either stun him with a Bob-omb or a Yoshi egg or evade his strikes. After three good hits, the Chomp will be freed, and will break the bars to a Star in gratitude.
100-Coin Star
Recommended Star: 8 Red Coins
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Medium
This one isn’t so bad. By collecting
the red coins, you get 16 coins right there, seeing that all red coins
count as two. There is a row of coins underneath the wooden plank, and
by beating the Troopa you get a blue coin. Near where you got the red coin
Star you’ll see some posts, which you can get coins from by running around
them three times really fast. If you’re still short, blast back up to the
floating island and fly through the coin rings. The star will come out
of the last coin collected, so try to make coin 100 easy to reach.
Course 2: Whomp’s Fortress
It’s a mysterious floating island with
a large castle in the middle. Most of the enemies around here are real
block heads. Ha ha h- Ow! Who threw that?
Star 1: Chip off Whomp’s Block
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Medium
Just like the last course, Star 1 consists of you climbing up to the top of the area and beating the boss. Here’s how to get up in some easy steps. First, go up the nearest ramp, past the rocks that try to push you off, and across the platforms that retract into the wall. Here you’ll see a stairway with some Thwomps, back in all their spiky glory. Even though they have spikes now, you can still stand on them (remember that). Climb the stairs and make your way past the Piranha Plant. Try crawling up to it with the R button and punching it before it wakes up. Next, go across the collapsible bridge and up the narrow plank (crawling helps to keep your footing). Now you should come to a strange device that looks like a wooden beam that turns around (only on Plit…) Jump onto the beam and run into the middle of it before you’re pushed off by the inconveniently-placed tringle. Once it rotates 180 degrees, jump off it and run around the walls. Watch the Whomp and make it to the giant floating platforms. Now you’re there.
Boss Battle: The Whomp King. Who IS this guy? He complains about being stomped on, so guess what you have to do. Stay in one place until he stops moving and is looking in your general direction. As soon as he starts to jump, run like butter to avoid a body slam that’d make Hulk Hogan look like Bill Nye the Science Guy. Once he’s down, quickly jump on top of him and ground pound. Repeat two more times and he’s history.
Star 2: To the Top of the Fortress
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Medium
The battle arena you fought on earlier has been replaced with a fortress turret. There also happens to be a Star conveniently placed at the top. Follow the directions from part one to get up. From there, look at the small stone cube with the hole in it. That’s the SM64 version of a Bullet Bill Blaster. Chances are you don’t want to stick around to see what it blasts. Jump up to a platform of the turret and make your way up from there. Note that some of the platforms retract, so don’t stay on them too long. A third thing to note is that flutter jumps don’t work too well at a time like this. Make it to the upper lip of the place and claim your Star.
Star 3: Shoot into the Wild Blue
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Surprisingly easy
The first time I tried this level, it was mad hard. What you have to do is go around the ramp instead of up it (look for a Mushroom in a block to get mad lives) and open the cannon (the Bob-omb Buddy is right next to it) and jump in. Then, you have to shoot at the area below where that giant pole is. If you can make it to the platform below (try to hit a pillar) and slide down the other pole, then the Star is yours. However, this is extremely hard if you don’t know where to line up the crosshairs. To make this trip quick and easy, I’ll let you in on a little secret that has been passed down in my family for about three hours prior to writing this. Look at the bottom arrow, and move it so that the point is in line with the upper pole. Arrange the bottom line of the triangle to match up with the floor directly under the pole. If this is done correctly, Mario should shoot off and hit the edge of the far pillar holding it up. Slide down and grab the Star.
Star 4: Red Coins of the Floating Isle
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Hard
You saw this coming, another eight red coins...
1. Go around the edge of the ramp again,
and remember where you saw the three Piranha Plants. The red coin is floating
overhead.
2. Jump over the inclining stone and
find yourself back at the start. This time, go up the ramp. Red coin 2
is near those stones that try to push you off.
3. Did you know that there’s a Mushroom
in one of the orange blocks near the Thwomps? Well, now is definitely NOT
the time to test it out. For red coin 3, jump on top of the second Thwomp
and jump straight up. If you destroyed the Thwomp like I told you not to
do, then go sit in the corner. You might be able to get it by back-flipping
or double jumping to it.
4. This one is behind the Piranha Plant
next to those stairs. It’s pretty hard to miss.
5. Instead of going across the collapsible
bridge this time, crawl along the wall. There is a very narrow ledge with
your red coin on it.
6. Remember that weird rotating plank?
Well, get on it, go into the middle, and when it makes a 180 degree turn,
walk to the edge again. Four gold coins and one red coin are now yours.
7-8. Make your way to the turret from
Star 2 and walk to the right. There should be a large plank of wood. Avoid
the Bullet Bills and give it two quick jump-kicks. The plank should fall
and you can make your way to the creepy levitating islands with coins 7
and 8.
The Star is in the Star shadow near where you started.
Star 5: Fall Onto Caged Island
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: “I could do it with my
toes”
This may be one of the easiest Stars you can get. First, you go to the tree right of your starting position and climb it. An owl should fly out of the tree. It’ll tell you it can fly you around the island, so jump up and hold the B button. Steer the owl over to where the touch screen shows a Star and drop off when you’re over the island. Presto, instant Star!
Star 6: Blast Away the Wall
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Easy
Remember the cannon from a couple Stars back? That’s good, because you’re gonna need it. Jump into the cannon and aim for one of the walls sticking out. If you blast yourself at it, you can actually break it off. Fire Mario’s hard head at the wall farther from the cannon and a Star should appear. From here, you can either shoot yourself at the Star or you can go around and jump to it.
Star 7: Switch Star of the Fortress
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Zzz…
This is another relatively easy one. Go around the other side of the ramp. A good marker to see where you are is the Goomba wearing the Mario hat. Punch the orange boxes and you should find a yellow step-switch that looks like a Star. Press it and the camera should show a familiar floating crystal being filled with a Star. Make it to the crystal before time runs out (if your volume is up you should hear clapping) and the Star is yours. Don’t forget about the Mushroom in the box by the first Piranha Plant.
100-coin Star
Recommended Level: Red Coins of the
Floating Isle
Recommended character: Mario
Difficulty: Medium
This one isn’t so bad. Beating up any
Piranha Plant will give you a blue coin, which is worth five coins. The
two posts in the beginning should give you about ten coins. That glorious
Mushroom on the side around the ramp should give you 50 coins or more if
you’re fast enough. Jump across to the stone area and collect the blue
coins you get from the switch block. If you still need more coins, go around
back to the ramp and beat up the random assortment of baddies. The 100th
coin should bring you to your Star.
Course 3: Jolly Roger Bay
A cove-ish area with a submerged fish
and an eel that missed his bed time. This would be a good time to point
out that this has some of the best theme music of the game, in my opinion.
Star 1: Plunder in the Sunken Ship
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: So-so
This level has really been watered down since the N64 level. (Get it? Watered! Ow! Who threw that?) Anyway, swim down to the large circular area filled with water. Take a deep breath and swim straight down. You should see a sunken ship if you’re in the right area. Swim up to the square hole and stay right next to it. If you’re close enough, Unagi the eel will come out and snap at you. Within a few seconds after doing so he’ll swim out, so hurry and swim in. Once inside find your way up and swim to the top immediately! There’s a pocket of air for you to recover your breath. Once you’re at full health, swim back down to the treasure chest. In the N64 version, you’ll recall having to get the right combination of four check. Well, now there’s only one. Hit the block to drain the boat, then jump up and hit the yellow block.
Star 2: Can the Eel Come out and Play?
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Medium
Did you know that Unagi is Japanese for eel? Well, either way, swim over to the newly emerged boat and swim straight down. It shouldn’t be hard to find the eel’s head. Swim next to the hole and Unagi will snap at you again and then swim out. The Star is at the end of his tail, so stay there until you’re at level with the Star and swim at it! The Star will jump over a few pixels, so just swim and grab it. Watch out, because if you hit Unagi you’ll take damage.
Star 3: Treasure in the Ocean Cave
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Easy
Swim back to the circular area with the boat and swim down. Using the map, you should be able to see there’s a hole with a path leading down it. The ring of coins is also a good hint. Swim up there and you’ll arrive in a cavern. Avoid the Goombas and falling stones and you’ll come upon four treasure chests. Hit them in a certain order to get the Star. Since this is a player’s guide, I suppose I have to give you the order. Anyone who wants to find out on their own should cover their eyes for the next part. The combination is the chest in the back, the chest on the left, the chest on the right, and the chest in front. Hit them in this order and not only will you avoid electrocution but you’ll get a shiny new Star,
Star 4: Blast to the Stone Pillar
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Kinda easy
What the game wants you to do is hop in the cannon and fire yourself to the protruding stone spire, from which you hop to the Star. But instead, go to either of the Red Blocks and become Valloon Mario. Quickly float over to the Star and grab it. I won’t tell anyone if you don’t…
Star 5: Red Coins on the Ship Afloat
Recommended Character: Wario
Difficulty: Hard
Using Wario is hard as it is, but you
have no choice. Just follow these simple steps…
1. Jump over to the Bob-omb Buddy and
climb all the way up to the top.
2 and 3. Grab the Power Flower near
the start and become Metal Wario. Check the ocean floor and find the sea
shells. One will be near where you started, the other will be near the
floating plank of wood.
4 and 5. These are the riskiest of
them all. Back flip up to the Red Block near the ship and sink straight
down. You have a matter of seconds to navigate the bottom and find the
two shells with red coins in them. Afterward, quickly get Wario over to
either the Mario or Luigi cap and put it on. Get some air from the three
coins around the hat and swim back up for dear life.
6. Back flip back up to the Red Block
but instead press the switch near it. Follow the path of newly-formed boxes
onto the ship’s deck. This one’s nearer to the bow (which is ship talk
for the front).
7 and 8. Avoid the box with the skull
and crossbones and jump up to the back of the ship (the stern, I believe).
The last two coins and the Star Shadow are here.
Star 6: Switch Star of the Bay
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Easy
Swim down back to the pirate’s secret cave. This time, turn left and you’ll find a Red Block and a star switch. Turn invisible and hit the switch. Now run over to the left side and go through the grating while invisible, and grab the Star out of the crystal while there’s still time.
Star 7: Through the Jet Stream
Recommended Character: Wario
Difficulty: Zzz…
Bound your way over to the second Red Block of the course and don the Flower. Jump into the water and position Wario into the center of the sunken area. His metal girth should be enough to sink him into the Star.
100-Coin Star
Recommended Level: Red Coins on the
Ship Afloat
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Insanely hard!
One of the hardest Stars in the game.
The first and most important thing is the blue coin block at the start.
Immediately break the orange boxes behind it and you should see a Koopa
shell. Before it vanishes, ground pound the switch and hop on the shell.
Glide along the water and collect all the blue coins before time runs out.
If you were unable to do so, exit and try again. There’s a ring of coins
around the spire that you supposedly blast to in Star 4 (Shh…) and rows
of coins on the platforms to the ship. There are some more coins in the
pirate’s cave and some scattered about on the bay’s sea floor. That should
get you a hundred.
Course 4: Cool, Cool Mountain
This place is filled with cool creatures
and other ice-related puns. I won’t get into the pun part…
Star 1: Slip Slidin’ Away
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Medium
From your starting place, notice the house with the coins leading into the chimney. Follow the coins and you’ll land in an insanely large under-mountain slide. While sliding down, follow the path of the coins and you’ll stay alive. About a third of the way down, you’ll come to an area with a row of coins leading straight into a wall. This leads to a secret passage that will give you two 1-Ups and send you to the end of the course. However, if you want the coins or miss the passage, then follow the coin trail for the safest route. You’ll end up inside another house, where upon opening the door, the Star pops out.
Star 2: Li’l Penguin Lost
Recommended Character: Luigi
Difficulty: Easy
When you jumped into the chimney last Star, I’m sure you noticed a cute little penguin waddling around. Well, that penguin’s lost and needs to be brought back to his momma. Grab him and jump off the ledge, then, instead of sliding down the slippery slopes, use your map and jump off the edge of the platform you start out on. You should be somewhere around the snowman’s head. Pass the Mr. Blizzards and find the giant penguin. She’ll give you a Star. Before you take the Star, pick up the penguin again. The mommy will stare you down and start to follow you.
Star 3: Big Penguin Race
Recommended Character: Mario
Difficulty: Hard
Just like Star 1, but this time you’re also racing a giant penguin. Hold down the D-Up button to gain speed, but don’t go out of control. Take the shortcut and the penguin will disqualify you when you reach the finish line, so stay ahead of him and follow the money. You’ll beat him in no time. If you lose to him, exit the house and go right until you see a broken down wooden bridge with a red coin on a patch of land between it. There’s also a giant wooden arrow there. Crawl to the very edge of it and be teleported back to the top.
Star 4: Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Hard
Yup, another 8-coin challenge. For this one, you’ll have to…
1. Go up to the naughty penguin and
you’ll see a red coin in a block of ice. You should also see a small fire
off to your left. Go and have Yoshi eat the fire, then spit it out at the
block.
2. Go down the frosty slope until you
get to a bridge-type area with a row of coins down it. Jump off and flutter
to the wall. You should slide right down; make sure you jump and ground
pound when you reach the ground. Melt away red coin number two.
3. Jump down and run to your left to
find a Bob-omb Buddy with a red coin. Talk to him and he’ll tell you where
the rest are on the map.
4. Hop down past the snowman’s head
and go southward until you can’t go south anymore without falling over
(there should be a rope mini-barrier anyway). Take a step of faith and
drop down where you see the two wooden posts that have ropes attached.
5. Run back up and go across the wooden
bridge, avoiding the Blizzards. Red coin 5 is on the disconnected bridge
seen shortly after crossing the first one. Notice that on the other side
is a Star shadow.
6. Drop down and meet another Blizzard.
This one throws snowballs, so quickly eat the whirly flower next to it
and throw it at the snow fiend to put him on ice. (Ok, so that was a horrible
pun.) Jump again and you’ll see several hat-wearing Goombas. Walk back
to where you saw the momma penguin (it’s to the left) and climb the tree
to claim the sixth coin. Note that you'll also wake up the owl. You don't
need to talk to him.
7. Remember the broken-bridge from
the last Star? The one with the giant eye sore arrow? Grab the red coin
from there, but don’t teleport up.
8. Go right until it looks like you
can’t go right anymore. Your last red coin is hugging the farthest wall
over.
Go to where you found coin 5 and flutter jump over the gap to claim your Star.
Star 5: Snow Man Lost His Head
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Easy
Go to where you found the little penguin and go left to come across a smallish snowball. It’ll ask you to find it a good head, and promise to follow you. Slide down the slopes as fast as you can. Don’t take shortcuts, or else the snowball may roll off a cliff. Run to the body-less snowman mentioned earlier and stand in front of it. Turn your camera so that you can see the path you just treaded on. Jump out of the way as the snowball pounds right into the head. The two will be so happy to be united, they’ll give you a Star.
Star 6: Mario’s Super Wall Kick
Recommended Character: Please tell
me you know
Difficulty: Medium-hard
From your start, jump off and land near the now full snowman. Pass the Mr. Blizzards and go to the tree where the owl was. You’ll notice a cannon there. Run over to the wooden ski lift thing and jump off when you get to the Bob-omb Buddy. Talk to him and he’ll open the cannon. Wait until the lift comes back and jump back on. Hop into the canon and aim for the tree. It’d be wise to center your cannon’s point at the tree, but aim much higher than it. And when I say it’d be wise, I mean if you don’t you’ll probably die. Run down the alcove and take care of the flower guys, then do a long jump across the gap. Run up past the life heart and up to the wall. While you’re running, jump up and wall kick to the next side. The next one takes a lot of work. You have to run and do a double jump up to a flat surface of the wall, then immediately wall kick off it. Crawl down the ice path and claim your Star.
Star 7: Switch Star of Cool Cool Mountain.
Recommended Character: Wario (gasp!)
Difficulty: Hard
Yes, I want you to start out as Wario. From the start, run to the right until you see a sign. The sign should be next to a broken bridge. If you stand at the edge of it, you’ll be teleported down to the penguins. Run over to the mother penguin and notice the crystal in the frozen pond. Ground Pound the pond to free it. After you do that, jump out and beat up the Goomba wearing Luigi’s hat and put it on. Ride the wooden lift back to the Bob-omb Buddy, but this time press the Switch Star. Instead of waiting for the lift to come back, take a leap of faith and jump off the platform and toward the crystal. An updraft will keep you from falling and dying and bring you to the other side if you keep that D-pad pointed in the right direction. Plotholes aside, it will bring you to the other side and crash you into the snow. You’ll have a few seconds left after pulling back out to get the star in the crystal, so RUN!
100-coin Star
Recommended Level: Frosty Slide for
8 Red Coins
Recommended Character: Yoshi
Difficulty: Medium
This one isn’t so bad. First thing to do is go down the chimney and collect all the coins from the slide room. Make sure that you don’t grab the Star on your way out. After that, go back up through the teleport and go down the frosty slopes, collecting all the coins you can. There’s a blue coin block at the sharp turn near the bottom. Jump over the wall and it’s there. If you still need coins, you can go around and collect the red coins, or attack the flower minions. If you turn the flowers into eggs, you can defeat the Blizzards and get even more coins. Dang, I didn’t get to use as many cold-based puns as I'd hoped. Ah well.
