Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time Game Guide

By Kirbysonicmario

Before the game starts, a short cutscene about the Shroobs starts. It says that they're looking for a new home, and,of all the places, it is the Mushroom Kingdom!!! Uh oh...

Now, you start the game playing as Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. Young Toadsworth welcomes you, and tells you that Baby Peach wants to play with Mario and Luigi. Head north until you see Toads knocked out on the  floor. Baby Bowser then fights you for Baby Peach.

Baby Bowser
Here's your first major fight. You fight with only Baby Mario here. Now, keep jumping on Baby Bowser, and dodging his fire breath until he faints. Remember that you use the X button, not A. You know, those "Oh no!"s  can get very annoying.

After you're done fighting, the Shroobs deliberately attack Baby Peach's castle.

You then see an even shorter cutscene about E. Gadd's time machine. It is powered by the Cobalt Star. (D'oh! I should've told Bowser that! I'm still burnt!)

After the cutscene, Toadsworth gets worried SICK about the princess' time  travel.Because of his worrywart personality, he knocks himself out! Wow. He must  really love Peach (Ooooh...)

After Toadsworth faints, direct Mario to Toadsworth's room and get his  Refreshshroom. (If you're lost, use the map on the top screen. And right when I said that, Lakitu shows you how the map's used.) Get those ? Blocks along the  way, because there's a boss battle coming up soon. When you get the Refreshroom, head back to Peach's throne room, where you started. Then give Toadsworth the Refreshroom.

Right after this, the time machine comes back, tattered, scratched, and just  plain destroyed. But, unfortunately, Peach isn't in there. An evil Shroob is  inside instead!

Junior Shrooboid
Remember the boss battle I told you about earlier? Well, this is it! It's like the Baby Bowser battle, but this time, you use A! When you counterattack, the battle goes faster! This is the reason why Mario's stronger than Luigi in the beginning.

When a Toad walks into the tattered time machine, he sees that the princess is gone! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Sorry. I'm half Kirby. Luigi then "says" that a time hole of some sort appeared in the garden just south of the throne room. Direct Mario and Luigi to the garden, and run away from that hideous monster... seriously, he's NOTHING compared to Yoob. I'll get to him later... and what about the senior?! Oh well, just get to the garden...

If you're hurt from that not-so-tough fight, you might take special interest in the Heart Block in the south corridor. These restore health. They're not very  easy to find in later levels, if they ARE in later levels, but tough darts, I suppose... and don't forget to save, okay? After saving, head outside.

E. Gadd explains that the funny swirling hole is a time hole, according to
his research. Luigi looks into the swirling vortex as Toadsworth's rolling bed  crashes into the time hole, and Luigi falls in. Mario has no choice but to  follow him!

*Try not to look into the time hole, if you get dizzy very easily. I mean  it!*

The time hole takes you to the outskirts of Hollijolli village. Then Stuffwell appears and explains "I can be LOADED with all your doodads!" Or something like that.  When he's done speaking, he says the famous "BACK TO  ADVENTURE!" line. Remember from when I interviewed him? I don't. Anyway, after he says the, you know, line, the time hole disappears and Luigi sort of... cries. Be sure to save here, too. Then head to the east.

When you head a couple of feet, Stuffwell teaches you how to jump properly in the game. If you played Superstar Saga, this shouldn't be much of a problem. You don't need the high-jump maneuver either! How convenient... When you're done, head to the east again.

Stuffwell then tells you how to jump over small gaps. Follow this, or you'll fall! If you never really played before...

Stuffwell finally teaches you about custom blocks. When you hit them all and the path clears, head north.

When you head north, a Toad resident from Hollijolli Village falls on Mario's head and he faints. The Shroobs then start destroying Hollijolli Village! Seeing this on the top screen (HUH?), the Brothers head for a giant floating Mushroom packed with Shrooblets. My best guess is that they're baby Shroobs. Ask Wendy...

With the Shrooblets as living punching bags, Stuffwell teaches you all the basic fundamentals of battling in the game. There's a lot of Shrooblets to be kille- I mean FOUGHT! FOUGHT!!! Sorry. There's a lot of Shrooblets, so practice up!

When you're about halfway through, a Shrooblet falls on Luigi's head. Right when that happens, Stuffwell shows you how to use items outside of battle. When that's over with, head west and keep practicing.

When you reach Hollijolli village, the Bros. are SHOCKED at what they saw! And that horrible music! The Shroobs are distroying the village, and abducting the villagers! Now, head to the mayor's house. It's the biggest house, so I guess it's hard to miss. There's a save album in a house, too.

When you walk into the mayor's house, you see that he's stuck in the chimney. HAHAHA!!!Oops, sorry. Well, you'll have to get him out. Jump into him as if he were a ? Block. Don't worry! He'll be fine! Heh... fine. YEAH, RIGHT!!! All right, now head outside.

The mayor gets abducted by the Shroobs, and you have to fight them now!

Shroobs
These aliens don't really count as bosses, but the boss music plays anyway.  Now, just do anything, 'cause YOU'RE NOT GONNA WIN!!! Why? There's a time bomb on the top screen, and it goes off in three turns. That's not enough time, so it's a battle you're supposed to lose. Don't take a tantrum on me! It's true!

Meanwhile, on the Koopa Cruiser, with the babies on it, the Shroobs deliberately attack! AUGHHHH!!! MAKE THEM SHUT UP!!!

All right, now you're controlling the babies. Head south, then east. Oh! Don't forget that the babies are the Y and X buttons. Get the ? Blocks on the way. You'll need them soon. When the short reminder of jumping is over, head north.

Now, head east, and there's more ? Blocks along the way. Hit them! After you hit the blocks and reach the end of the boxes, head north. There's a save  allum, so save! After you save, head up the stairs.

Now you're in the cockpit. A bunch of talking goes on here. When Baby Bowser fires the Koopa Cannon at the attacking Shroobs, the ship falls to Hollijolli village! What are the odds of that? They notice the adult Mario Bros, but Bowser does not plan on saving them from those stupid Shroobs. Baby Peach then throws a tantrum! How annoying... That causes Bowser to help Mario and Luigi, blasting those Shroobs.

You're in Hollijolli Village now. Go to the adult Mario Bros, near the mayor's house.

When the babies check up on the adults, the Shroobs come back!!!

Shroobs 2
At the start of the battle, just jump on the Shroobs. On the second turn or so, Young Toadsworth shows the babies how to use Bros. Items. Remember the Shroobs' attack patturn, and use Y and X! Fortunately, the Shroobs don't have a time bomb this time.

After the battle, Young Toadsworth takes Mario and Luigi to the Koopa Cruiser.

But the game gets interrupted when Young Toadsworth tells about the Shroobs looking for a new home and how serious it is. And if you said Bowser only helped Mario once, you're wrong. This is sort of a cutscene... WHOA!!! LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO PEACH'S CASTLE!!!

The Shroobs fire a missle at the Koopa Cruiser, and it explodes... again... But they manage to get back to Baby Bowser's Castle.

CRASH!!! The Koopa Cruiser crashes, and everyone including the babies land only DAD knows where... Be sure to save here, as well. After you save, head to the east.

In the next corridor, it's a bit of a maze. There are some Goombas here. Remember: You don't have to fight if you don't want to. But if it's a boss, then tough luck. Anyway, I trust you can find your way.

Ready for some Super Monkey Ball (oversized capsule not included)? Climb up the stairs and try to stay on the ledge elevated from the floor. I don't really think that what I just said makes sense. Just try to reach the end of the long, winding pathway. Try not to fall off; the Goombas are just itching to fight.

In the next room, the babies are trapped! What? You can't see them? Oops. Hey, cameraman, show the people the top screen! *scene moves to top screen* kay... wait! I can't see me! (This isn't a Scribble, stupid!) Sorry... HEY!!!  WHY YOU!!!

(Please stand by...)

All right, now, here, when the babies get down safely, head to the left. AHHHH!!! Wait! The babies start crying, and Stuffwell teaches you how to move together. All right, NOW move to the left.

When you reach the door, you'll notice it's locked. Just jump on the huge button and press on. It only works if the adults and babies are on it together. Remember that. I tried. It didn't work. I'm in the game?

Now, in this room, throw the babies onto the ledge; it's too big for the adults to reach. Now, head the babies to the door, hit the pipe block, and press on.

Now, here's some examples for what the babies can really do! Get the custom blocks in the small gap, and have the adults smash the other ? Blocks. When you're done, unlock the door like the first one and move on.

Throw the babies onto the ledge and hit the save block, so you can save. Hit the pipe block, and have the adults throw the babies onto the higher ledge. How does Baby Bowser get around with all these ledges?! My legs are sore! Wait...
Do I even have legs? Oh well... Now, hit the ! block to lower the red platform so the adults can get up to hit the switch.

Uh oh... here's Kamek! He's looking for Baby Bowser, when he notices Mario and Luigi. He realizes he tried to steal them once, and they got bigger and harrier... and he makes a Goomba, Boo, and both again to battle you!

Here, Stuffwell teaches you how to fight while you're piggybacking the babies. Get used to it, for you will be doing that a lot...

After that, head to the east, cross the bridge, and practice the piggyback battling and the Bros. Items on the Boos and Boom Guys. Or you can just run away from the battles, if you want. But you'll regret it later!

After going through the pipe, save with the save album. Then head north.

In the next corridor, you'll learn how to throw the babies into small tunnels that the adults can't go in. Same thing in the next one. I'm getting a little lazy, so I'm not typing much...

In the next room, you'll notice a floating treasure chest. But it's locked behind a door! Head to the west and throw  the babies into the tunnel. As you'll notice, it's, ummm... very dark. So have the adults read the sign near the tunnel, and do what it says. Then you'll eventually get to the other side of the tunnel. Then hit the treasure chest. The doors then open.

You're almost at the time hole to the castle. Head to the right... Oh! But be sure to save!!!

Now, this room is the easiest... just hit the switch, and go to Bowser's playroom. That's where the new time hole is.

Finally! Back at the castle! Go to Professor E. Gadd, and see what's up now.

He's researching the Junior Shrooboid you fought earlier. When the Cobalt Star Shard gets near it, the Shrooboid reacts strangely. Then the shard makes a new time hole leading to Toadwood Forest. Hmmmm... that place sounds verrrry suspicious... go check it out, fast!!! And a new shop just opened up for business in the castle. You'd better stock up on items, unless you think you'll be fine. Don't worry! It'll be there for the rest of the game.

When you jump into the new time hole, there will be a short, hilarious cutscene when the two Toadsworths fight over Baby Peach. HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's just too rich!!! Okay, back to the game...

Okay, you're in some forest where the woods are made of Toads... that's creepy. Not to mention that they're still alive. It's a Toad's worst nightmare! RUN, ET, RUN!!! (ET runs across the screen, screaming.)

You know what? There are enough aliens in this game, thank you, ET!!! Oh well... just head east.

You'll probably notice some lava-like stuff flowing in the ground. What do  you think that is? Now... you come across some huge tree stump with a hole  leading down. Throw the babies into it! Don't worry... they'll be fine...  there are three of them here. One of them has an enemy in it called Koopeleon. When you want the babies to get out of a hole, jump onto the yellow spring. When you're done, head north (with the babies).

Uh oh! Toadiko, who was on the time machine with Peach, is stuck to a tree. She explains that they got attacked by the Shroobs, who took Bowser's place of stealing Peach, and that the Toads have been tied to the trees and are having their energy slowly sucked away. It all goes to the factory for fueling the Shroobs' stupid saucers! Then, she is interrupted when she is turned into a Mushroom. Don't
worry about her now; head east.

Look at all the Toadwood! There are two tree stumps here. Throw the babies inside both of them, but one
has an Elasto Piranha inside. When you're done, head east.

All the energy leads to the Vim Factory. D'oh! There are trees in the way! You'd better get rid of the trees, then. If only I had those matches... wait! Matches! Haha! Head south then west, and you'll come across a bunch of glass-like boxes. Throw the babies into the stump.

Man! This place is huge! Beware the Elasto Piranhas and Koopeleons! You're on your own finding the boxes with fire inside. When you want to get out, find the spring and jump on it.

Now have the adults hit the above ground blocks. The fire should all go in  the middle block. When it is, hit it. It'll burn down the trees in your way. Haha! I'm so smart, it's not even funny! Okay, go back the way you came, and go down the pipe. It leads you to the factory. Be sure to save when you're out of the pipe.

Okay, now head north.

A Toad stuck to a tree says that the Vim Factory is just ahead, so, well, go ahead!

There's the factory! D'oh! The bridge is out! Guess we'd better put it in. Head east.

What's this? A field of spikes? Oh, you can't just go around it. Throw the babies into the stump and turn your attention to the top screen. You'll see a block with an arrow on it. Direct the adults to the floating platform and hit the block when the arrow points to the right. Stop it when the adults come across the path. Have them take it. There's a block on the left one, but where you're supposed to be is on the right. There's a bridge ahead, so you'd better cross it.

You'll need the babies for this part, so hit the pipe block. Do you know how to high jump? If you don't, then read the sign. High jump the block, then four more blocks will appear. Hit them all!!! Haha!!! The bridge is halfway made! Now head down the next path.

Aww, man! Another spike field!  - -;  Well, do what you did last time. Direct the adults to that platform over there and heat east. Be sure to jump over that yellow thing, or go around it if you can. Hit that ! Block and go back where you  came from. I strongly suggest that you just jump into the spike field; you'll get back to the beginning. Now jump onto the new platform and head west.

Hey look! Another tower! If you don't have the babies with you, hit that pipe block. Do what you did last time and the bridge will be finished! Be sure to hit that ? Block and that custom block before you move on.

Now you gotta get there. Now which way do you want to take? The long way, or the short way? If you want to take the long way, then fine. If you're taking  the short way, then listen close! Do what you did those two other times. But now you have to move down. There's some obstacles here, so bewaaaaare!!! Now you're back where you started. Go to the bridge, hit the pipe block, and head inside.

Take the pipe leading to the factory.

You're in the factory! Yesss! Hit that save block over there right now!

Hey! Those are Hammer Bros. over there, and they have mind control thingies on their heads! Now the adults get sucked into some nose thing! Now the babies are alone! Dispose of those mind control helmets immediately!

Hammer Bros.
They attack with, surprise, their hammers. Now watch out! They like to play croquet with each other, and shoot the other Hammer Bro at one of the babies. If it drops the hammer, don't move, or else! That's their only attack when they're together. When there's only one left, they go back to their roots and chuck hammers at you. Jump over them. There's no faking out with that attack, so jump over every hammer!

Hey! You saved the Hammer Bros!

They give the babies hammers and teach them how to use them in their gratitude of saving them.

Now jump onto that yellow platform and head through the door. I know it's tempting to go into the one on the far left side of the room, but that way's blocked.

Use what you learned earlier in here! It's easy. Same thing in the next one so you can move on. There's no enemies in either one of them. All those things that looks like faces are creeping me out...

Now you're in the vents! Just like in the spy movies! There are enemies here, so the Hammer Bros. take advantage of this and teach you how to use hammers in battle.

Now unless you want to practice fighting with the hammer some more, go under the barrier to the right.

Hey! A tree's sucking the vim out of Mario and Luigi! I think... Whatever they're doing to them, it's probably bad. Break those lightning balls and free Mario and Luigi! Now you practice fighting with hammers while piggybacking the babies.

Now you gotta press onward! Hit that big red button and go to the room where you started. Jump onto the blue platform and move on.

Hey! Look at all these enemies! Let's get them with your hammers! Or you can just avoid them and move on.

Use the pipe in the next room. Save when you reach the second half of the factory.
