Lethal Lava Land
Star 1-Boil the
Big Bully
Character: Luigi/Mario
(Here, Luigi's jumping skills come in handy, but he will be knocked around
by Big Bully more than Mario will.)
When you start,
head left through the arch and left again at the opening/closing bridge.
Dash past the Mr. I, go past the Bowser puzzle, and turn right at the spinning
platform and onto Big Bully's arena. Boss: Big Bully - The way to beat
Big Bully is to simply punch him off the platform and into the lava. You
can either punch-punch-kick him off or try to ground pound him off. Using
a ground pound will mean you will be knocked aroud less, but punch-punch-kicking
Big Bully is faster. After he is defeated, stairs will appear leading to
the platform with the Power Star.
Star 2-Bully the
Bullies
Character: Luigi
Head left through
the arch and then jump onto the spinning ring around the volcano. Then
bounce on the block spitting fire with the 1-Up on it, and Copter Spin
to Big Bully's platform. Next, either Copter Spin to the right or ride
the sliding platform to another platform with a ring of coins and three
Bullies. Knock all the Bullies over, and Big Bully will face you again.
Boss: Big Bully
- Nothing has changed since last Star, except the platform is more rectangular,
giving you a better chance to be knocked off. If you need more health,
get coins from the ring, or Copter Spin off to the right to the brown,
sloped platform or the one with the Mr. I. Once Big Bully is in the lava,
a Power Star appears in the center of the platform.
Star 3-Eight Red
Coin Puzzle with 15 Pieces
Character: Luigi
Take the same
path you did in Star #1, but stop at the Bowser Puzzle. Grab all the Red
Coins here, watching out for the sliding pieces. If you wait for the puzzle
to assemble correctly, extra coins will pop out. The Power Star appears
in the upper-right-hand corner.
Star 4-Red Hot
Log Rolling
Character: Luigi
Turn right after
the arch and onto the spinning volcano platform. Go right to a circular
platform with a ring of coins and two Bullies. On the right side of this
platform is a sliding mesh platform. Hop on it, and stand on the left to
avoid the first fire jet, then on the right for the second and third fire
jets. When the platform stops, hop on the brick platform and Copter Spin
across to the grate wall to get the Power Star.
Star 5-Hot Foot
it Into the Volcano
Character: Luigi
Jump on the spinning
ring around the volcano again, but this time, jump into the volcano (make
sure it's not erupting). You will fall onto a platform on top of some very
cool-looking magma. Run up the path by the wall, avoiding/killing the Bully
and making sure not to get crushed by the falling wall. Hop on the floating
platforms with the coins and up to the to fire jets coming out of the wall.
On the next step up, it is best to knock the Bully over so it doesn't push
you off the narrow bridge. Now, climb up on the pole, angle yourself so
you land on the next pole when you jump, then jump onto the platform with
the Power Star.
Star 6-Inside
the Volcano
Character: Luigi
Go inside the
volcano again, but this time Copter Spin up to the checkerboard elevator
above you. When the elevator stops, climb up on the pole, then bounce onto
the next pole (grab the 1-Up here!). Jump onto the platforms to get the
Power Star.
Star 7- Flaming
Silver Stars
Character: Luigi
Another round
of Silver Star hunting. If there was ever a Star to use Luigi on, this
would be it. A good technique would be to ride the Koopa Shell in the yellow
! Box past the arch.
1. Copter Spin
behind you to the platform with the Star Sphere and the ! block. Then Copter
Spin to the crescent-shaped platform.
2. On a crescent
island near the Bowser Puzzle.
3. On a crescent
island across from #2, past the spinning fire platform.
4. On the far
side of the Star next to a Mr. I
5. On a brown
slope near #4
The Power Star
appears in the Star Sphere near #1.
Burning Money
For this 100-coin
Star, bash the Bullies, kill the Mr Is, get the Red Coins, and get all
the money in the volcano. Make sure to go into the volcano last because
you can't exit once you enter.
Course 8: Shifting
Sand Land
Note: This course
has no painting, but is just in the wall by Course #7.
Star 1-In the
Talons of the Big Bird
Character: Luigi
When you start,
turn left and jump over the sand dune and run up the side of the closest
pillar. When the big bird, Klepto, comes holding the Power Star, jump and
bash him. The Star appears on the other side of the pyramid. Copter Spin
over and grab it.
Star 2-Shining
Atop the Pyramid
Character: Luigi
Run up the pillar
like last time, and Copter Spin to the pyramid. Run up the path, avoiding
the enemies, until you reach an alcove containing a Power Star.
Star 3-Inside
the Ancient Pyramid
Character: Luigi
Copter Spin to
the pyramid once again, but this time fall into the hole between the two
! Boxes. Once inside, turn left, run past the giant Grindle, and jump into
the quicksand to the right. Jump up on the platform with the stairs (climb
them), then jump up and climb across the mesh ceiling next to the Amp.
Jump off to the next platform, cross the gap with the rising Grindle, and
climb the pole. Climb across the next mesh ceiling, climb up the steps,
and duck into the alcove to avoid being steamrollered by the rolling Grindle.
Run past the heart, up the rising platform, past the Amps, and hold up
against the far wall and move slowly to the right to sidle along the narrow
path. Climb up the pole and run across the bridge, taking care not to be
squashed by the Grindle. Run up the ramp with the coins and jump onto the
platform to get the Power Star. Whew!
Star 4-Stand Tall
on the Four Pillars
Character: Luigi
If you don't
use Luigi, you probably will have to "stand tall on the four pillars",
but with him it's totally unnecessary. Go back into the pyramid and run
onto the closest platform to the left in the sea of quicksand. Facing the
Grindle, Copter Spin into the little hole in the red thing. Punch the orange
block and run down the ramp into the secret chamber. Hop on the stones
by the torch and they will spring to life.
Boss: Eyerock
- A a pair of hands with two eyes in the center. Punch each eye three times
for a Power Star. Avoid getting squished or swept off the arena.
Star 5-Tox Box
Switch Star
Character: Wario
From the start,
run over to the metal bridges with the Tox Boxes on them. Jump to the section
with the cannon, the ! Block, and the Black Brick Block. Punch that and
step on the Star Switch. Then, stand on the square to the left of the !
Block to transport to the Star Sphere.
Star 6-Pyramid
Puzzle
Character: Luigi
Start by Copter
Spinning into the pyramid and clamber up to the top again. Bounce up to
the platform that contains the entrance to Eyerock's lair, but don't enter.
Instead, jump to the river of sand. Grab the Stars here, and then grab
the ones on the platforms above you.
Star 7-Free Flying
for 8 Red Coins
Character: Mario
Yet another Red
Coin hunt. Half of the coins are in the sky, so you'll need to grab the
Wing Cap on the large, metal structure near the start:
1. Behind the
starting platform, on a very narrow ledge by the edge of the world. Walk
carefully!
2. In a box beneath
the Wing Cap box.
3. On the metal
bridge with the Tox Boxes on it.
4. In the oasis
by the palm tree and the Star Sphere.
5-8. The final
four red coins are in the air near the four pillars.
The Power Star
appears on the large, metal structure with the Wing Cap and the yellow
! Box.
Coins in the Desert
To net the required
100 coins here, collect the Red Coins, squish the Pokeys, and collect all
of the coins in the pyramid. Make sure to get the pyramid coins last, because
there's no exit once you're inside!
Course 9-Dire,
Dire Docks
Star 1-Board
Bowser's Sub
Character: Luigi
Swim straight
down in the water at the start, avoiding the fish and the giant whirlpool.
Swim into the tunnel marked by the ring of coins, and follow the bright
yellow arrows inside. When you emerge into the large pool, swim up and
walk along the ledge untill you see a purple ! Switch on the floor. Step
on it to create two sets of blocks. Run along the bridge right next to
the switch (not the stairs) onto Bowser's Sub, and claim the Power Star.
Star 2-Chests
in the Current
Character: Luigi
At the bottom
of the first lake by the whirlpool, there are three treasure chests. For
the Star, you must open them in the following order:
1. Chest by the
clam
2. Chest by the
bunch of seaweed
3. Chest closest
to the whirlpool
Once you open
the chests, a Power Star flies out of the whirlpool.
Star 3-Pole-Jumping
for Red Coins
Character: Luigi
*Note: Since
the Red Coins are all in the same area just floating in the air, I will
not use the usual method of listing their locations.*
Ugh, I despise
this Star. Swim down to the area where Bowser's Sub used to be, and press
the ! Switch again. Run up the block stairs this time, and grab Red Coin
#1 on the platform, and hop on the pole that comes on the left side to
grab Red Coins #2-4. Ride back to the first platform, and hang onto the
pole that comes on the other side of it. Land on the platform where the
pole takes you, and grab onto the pole that comes next. Now, you must carefully
align yourself and jump onto the pole that stops next to your currrent
pole at a 90-degree angle. Let this pole carry you past the platform and
into Red Coin #5, and the drop down onto the platform when the pole returns
there. Jump onto the pole behind the red grate to collect Red Coins #6-7,
and then Copter Spin to Red Coin #8 on the red caged platform. The Power
Star appears on the second platform here.
Star 4-Through
the Jet Stream
Character: Luigi
Swim down into
the are where the sub was, and you'll see a jet of bubbles in the center.
Float above it and through five of the rings so that a Power Star appears
on the bottom.
Star 5-Koopa Surfin'
Switch Star
Character: Wario
For this Star,
you don't even need to break the water's surface-tension. Super Punch the
black brick block by the edge of the level on the island to the left to
reveal a Star Switch. Break the yellow ! Block to get a Koopa Shell. Then,
hit the Star Switch and ride the shell to the Power Star on the opposite
island.
Star 6-Inside
the Cage
Character: Luigi
Swim down to
the submarine area, and grab the invisible Power Flower from the very end
of the platform (right side when facing where the sub was). Dive into the
water and swim through the cage for a Power Star.
Star 7-The Manta
Ray's Reward
Character: Luigi
In the very first
water area, you'll notice a manta ray swimming around with rings coming
from its tail. Swim through five of these rings in a row for a Power Star.
Money in the Water-100
Coins in Dire, Dire Docks
For this 100-coin
Star, I suggest being Wario and later grabbing a Luigi cap. Get the coins
from the black brick block, all the ones in the water, and the Red Coins.
Don't forget to pound the Blue Coin Switch on one of the platforms near
the Red Coins!
Bowser in the
Fire Sea
Character: Luigi
At the start,
ride the moving mesh platform, jumping off when it sinks beneath the lava.
Then, walk over the undulating blue platform (avoid the lava!). Run past
the Goombas by the heart, hop on the pole in the elevator, and jump on
the left platform. Run to the pole to the left, climb in the mesh cage,
and take the gray elevator platform to the left. When the elevator stops,
long jump across the lava gap, and either run on top of the mesh "ceiling",
or climb along the underside. Run past the platform with the Bullies, and
run up the rising/falling ramps. When the ramps are at their highest point,
you can jump onto another platform with a yellow ! block containing some
coins, as well as a Star Sphere. Continue on past another undulating blue
platform, and use the mesh elevators to reach a crumbling tan bridge. Run
across the crumbling bridge and jump down the large funnel to face Bowser
Boss: Bowser
Bowser has aquired
some new tricks since the last duel. In the beginning, he'll pound the
arena and make it tilt, so you need to run to the higher-up side. Bowser
will also sometimes teleport if you get too close, making the task of grabbing
him a real chore. Wait until Bowser is busy breathing fire or something,
and hurl him into a spiked bomb to earn yourself another large key.
Course 10:
Snowman's Land
Note: Another
paintingless level. Use the key you got from Bowser for the doors in the
lobby. Once at the top of the spiral stairs, head right and through a door
with a star on it in an alcove. Run up the short flight of stairs, and
jump into the blank wall on the far left.
Star 1-Snowman's
Big Head
Character: Luigi
From the start,
head right past the red ! Block and long jump over the ice from where the
ground juts out. Slide down the hill to the left, jump onto the platform
with the big triangles of snow sliding down, and jump onto the ledge where
the snow triangles are coming from. Follow the wooden path up to the ice
bridge in front of the snowman with the penguin on it. When the snowman
talks and starts to blow across the bridge, Copter Spin over the penguin
and the bridge. Run up the wooden ramp, climb up onto the platform, and
Copter Spin onto the snowman's head for the Power Star.
An alternate
way to complete this Star would be to complete Star #6, "Into the Igloo",
and have the pink Bob-omb in the igloo open the cannon right next to the
start. Then, when you start this Star, just blast yourself to the tree
on top of the snowman's head.
Star 2-Chill With
the Bully
Character: Wario
Run up to the
red ! Block again, but take a sharp right here and long jump onto the ice
sheet with Big Bully from the tree.
Boss: Frozen
Big Bully
Big Bully is
back for revenge! But this time, you'll have to face him on slick and icy
turf. While Luigi might have had some difficulty with this icy boss, Big
Bully is no match for the power that Wario packs. Punch him over the edge
and into the freezing cold water to get his Star.
Star 3-Yoshi's
Ice Sculpture
Character: Yoshi
First, grab Yoshi's
Power Flower from the red ! Block. Then, take a sharp left from the start,
and you'll see a platform with multiple blocks of ice and a Power Star
trapped inside one of these blocks. Hop onto the single ice block, and
melt the block of ice containing the Star. Then, jump/backflip to the newly
thawed Power Star.
Star 4-Whirl From
the Freezing Pond
Character: Luigi
From the start,
head forward and left to the lake with all the spinny-flower dudes and
the big snow triangles. Then, Copter Spin onto the ledge across the pond,
and break the ! Box on the left for the Power Star.
Star 5-Snowman's
Silver Stars
Character: Luigi
Remember "Shell
Shreddin' For Eight Red Coins" from 64? Well, this is the same, but with
the Silver Stars instead. Return to the area with the last Star, and break
the ! Box on the right for a Koopa shell. Ride along the path on the right
to start your collecting spree:
1: On that path
on the right that I said to go on.
2: Farther up
from #1
3: Take a sharp
right and drop off the ledge, the Star is right there
4: Floating above
the freezing water under Frozen Big Bully's platform
5: Past #4, right
next to the fenced-off area with the Goombas wearing hats and the campfire
The Star Sphere
is at the entrance right next to the cannon.
Star 6-Into the
Igloo
Character: Luigi
If you're thinking
about the igloo from the original SM64 right now, prepare for a surprise.
It's in the same position, but it got a complete makeover, which makes
it much more irritating to get this Star. Anyway, head to the freezing
pond again, but this time, run up the path you used to get Star #1 (if
you did not use the cannon to reach #1), and Copter Spin across the ice
bridge with the penguin on it. Step on the wooden part, and look down through
the ice bridge. You will see the igloo below. Drop down from the bridge,
and crawl into the igloo. See? I said it looked way different. In the northwest
corner is a red ! Block. Break it to get an Power Flower to turn invisible,
and run back to the start. You will drop through the grate, and right onto
the Star.
Star 7-Red Coins
in the House
Character: Luigi
Whoop-dee-do.
Another igloo Star. Proceed into the igloo once again, and in case you
did not notice last time, it's filled with red coins. I won't use my usual
format here because they're all in the same place. Just be aware that some
are in the air, and others are in the water. Note that the water in here
is the freezing kind, so don't stay in too long. Your Star appears on an
eastern platform in the igloo.
Cold Cash-100
Coins in Snowman's Land
To net all the
100 coins here, you'll need to go for those spinny-flower guys and the
frog purses. Aside from that, the usual drill. Get the eight red coins,
and all of the other coins in the igloo.
Bustin' Out Wario
Character: Luigi
Freeing Wario
will be quite a chore, I'll tell you that now. It won't be easy at all.
Nevertheless, you must plow forward. As Luigi, head into the big mirror
room containing the entrance to Snowman's Land. Snag one of the flowers
sitting on the pedastals, and run into the mirror. Yes, you are now in
a reflection of the room. Weird, huh? Anyway, jump into the painting of
Wario on the right to enter the Chief Chilly Challenge.
All right, this place is kind of a pain, but this guide is here to tell you the fastest, most pain-free way to blow through the game and still get all 150 Stars. Start by sliding down the slope, and land on the snowy ground with a couple of Bullies. Ignore them, and Copter Spin across the platform bridge on the left. Turn right, and ride the moving platform across the gap. Make another right, and jump off the ledge, and have the wind dump you in the lake. Jump over the fence onto the platform with the army of Bullies. Copter Spin over them to avoid a confrontation, and then negotiate a tricky set of moving platforms. Then, bounce up on the rising and falling platforms until you reach a large pit in the ground. Drop down it to confront Chief Chilly.
Boss: Chief Chilly
Chief Chilly
is like a HUGE version of the frozen Bully in Snowman's Land. First, he'll
tell you that he locked up Wario because he was jealous of his awesome
crinkle-cut 'stache. Well, not in so many words, but the meaning is clear.
When the fight starts, run to the edge of the arena to lure Chilly there,
then jump-kick him over. When he falls, he'll bounce back up and destroy
parts of the arena, so watch out. Repeat the lure/jump-kick tactic twice
more to recover the Wario Key and free Wario! Huzzah!
Cold Steel: Using
Wario's Flower Power
Remember the
Metal Cap from Super Mario 64? Well, now it's Wario's Flower Power. Aside
being able to mow down enemies effortlessly, you can walk underwater! Pretty
nifty, huh?
