Hey, look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... Oh, wait, it's just Mario. Hey, wait, no it's not!
With the help of a special paintbrush, invented by Prof. E. Gadd, just about anyone can become Shadow Mario, the copycat that tried to frame Mario on Isle Delfino. In his origins, he was originally an image designed by Bowser Jr, Bowser’s youngest-to-date son. However, as time passed, Shadow Mario gained more and more control over the actions he made. Before long, Shadow Mario was in complete control whenever Bowser Jr. went into disguise! Of course, that didn’t mean Shadow Mario did any better than before. Shadow Mario caused all sorts of trouble, including dumping goop everywhere, unleashing paint monsters to attack Mario, and stealing his FLUDD!
But Shadow Mario’s “fun” didn’t last long. When Mario and FLUDD beat Bowser and Bowser Jr. at Corona Mountain, Bowser Jr. realized that whenever he transformed into Shadow Mario, he would take control. So Bowser Jr. decided to ditch the paintbrush, and go home with his father. Is this the end of Shadow Mario? Not a chance!
As fate may have it, Il Piantissimo happened to come across the paintbrush sticking out of the sand while practicing his running techniques. Curious, Il Piantissimo tried using the paintbrush. But then, a drop of goop fell on an old wanted poster of Shadow Mario, and then, for some unexplained reason (which is common in the Marioverse), Shadow Mario came back to life and took over Il Piantissimo’s body! Shadow Mario was back, and nastier then ever!
Soon, however, Shadow Mario got tired of tormenting the people of Isle Delfino and became bored with it all, until one day, word got to Isle Delfino about a golf tournament happening in the Mushroom Kingdom. Seeing a golden opportunity to cause mayhem, he took off with his pal, Petey Piranha, and traveled to the mainland of the Mushroom Kingdom.
After the golf tournament, Bowser Jr. cornered Shadow Mario and fought him for ownership of the paintbrush. Shadow Mario let himself get beat, however, because, either way he looked at it, he got what he wanted (he could just take over Bowser Jr.’s body). He gave Il Piantissimo his body back, melted into paint, and went into the paintbrush. But when Bowser Jr. took the paintbrush, Shadow Mario did not take form! Why is that?
It’s simple, really; it’s all in the bandana! See, in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr.’s bandana had Mario’s nose and mustache drawn on it. But now, because he thought it looked cooler, Bowser Jr.’s bandana had a pair of ferocious jaws drawn on it! With Bowser Jr’s new look, Shadow Mario remained imprisoned within the paintbrush!
Will Shadow Mario be released from his imprisonment? Are his troublemaking days over? And why in the world did Prof. E. Gadd make that paintbrush anyway? Those are some of the many mysteries of the Mushroom Kingdom.
