The Crystal King is a mystic and mysterious figure. It was he who created the Crystal Palace so long ago. The residents of Shiver City knew this, but gradually forgot as the centuries passed. Due to this lack of information, his age is unknown.
It is certain that he has been around for a long time. On close inspection, it seems that the magic he uses to create Crystal Bits from nothing and to duplicate himself is of ancient origin. This alone tells that he is more than six centuries old.
It is extremely difficult to say which species he is. At first glance, one might say he is nothing more than a robe, crown, and eyes floating for some inexplicable reason. However, I believe that his species knows how to partially cloak themselves. I also suspect that the Crystal King is the last of his species, since he is so old, and since I cannot compare him to other species.
Unfortunately, if he is the last of his species, than they are extinct now. When Bowser stole the Star Rod, he decided to send the seven Star Spirits to different locations, hoping that this would ensure that they could never be reunited. He researched who was capable to guard them. He was fresh out of minions, and this was the last of the seven. He finally found an ancient text telling of the Crystal King.
Bowser decided to take a chance, so he found the Crystal King and asked if he would guard the Star Spirit for him. The Crystal King agreed, since he hadn't seen any action for a long time; people thought he was a myth.
Mario arrived at the Crystal Palace,
only to find that it was full of mirror tricks and difficult puzzles. But,
he made his way through and eventually met the Crystal King. They fought
fiercely, but in the end, Mario was
victorious and freed the Star Spirit.
The Crystal King was destroyed in the process, so that probably means that his species is extinct now. However, I got thinking. If there is a Crystal King, could there somewhere be, a Crystal Queen?
