History:
Clawdia was the third daughter of a
wealthy and influential duke’s family. She and her sisters, being born
into luxury, had all the riches they could possibly desire.
Alas, how true it is that money cannot buy happiness.
Clawdia's father was a cold-hearted Koopa who bestowed love on no one, not even his own daughters. Frustrated by the fact that his wife was unable to produce a male heir, he was perpetually austere when dealing with his family, or his "failures", as he termed them. He was also a compulsive drinker; often at night, his daughters would fall asleep to the sound of his drunken raging.
Clawdia's sisters, Kelly and Karina, were used to this manner of living, and were indifferent to their family's troubles. Being close in age, they were inseparable companions, and could find solace in one another's company. Clawdia, however, was not so lucky; she grew up alone and neglected, forever languishing in the shadows.
In her early teens, Clawdia was allowed out of the house for the first time in her life, in order to see her father give an important public speech. Seeing an opportunity for escape, she slipped away into the crowds during the recital, and ran as far as she could. Soon she became lost; not knowing the dangers of being alone in such a place, she was imperiled by a group of shady-looking Koopas, who attempted to abduct the young duchess under cover of an abandoned shop front. However, she was not to be their bounty that day.
A dashing young Koopa male had wandered away from the crowds in search of some peace and quiet, and came across the scene. He rescued Clawdia from her would-be abductors, and sent them scurrying with a few swipes of his rapier; then, seeing the young duchess safely closer to the crowds, he looked into her eyes and told her his name.
Warutius Ravel Koopa.
As he disappeared into the crowds, Clawdia recovered her breath and stilled her beating heart; his gaze lingered in her mind, and his touch lingered on her claw… in that moment, Clawdia knew true love.
The young duchess’ escapade caused scandal and rumor-mongering amongst the townsfolk near the duke’s castle; enraged, he sent his estranged daughter to the dungeons, and ordered that she be kept there until such time as he saw fit to let her go.
Many years passed…
It was Clawdia’s 18th birthday, spent
as usual by herself in the dusty confines of her gloomy prison. Over
the years, she had done her best to
make it homely; however, the place remained a jail despite her best efforts.
Clawdia herself had become wraith-like and emaciated; irregular meals and
lack of sunlight had rendered her all but a pale shadow of the young beauty
she once was. Only the thought of the young fellow who had saved her so
long ago kept the anguished girl from spiraling into insanity.
That day marked the start of her new life. If only she had known…
The young duchess was summoned to the upper areas of the castle; stares and whispers followed her all the way from the dungeon to the throne room, but she did her best to ignore them…Her father may have taken away what little joy she had, but he could never take away her dignity.
Clawdia entered the throne room, and found her father waiting for her, and beside him… the young Koopa who had saved her! Warutius! She hung her head in shame - he had grown into a handsome Koopa over the years, while she had deteriorated in the dungeons. But… why did he look so sad...? A fierce, burning hatred of her father took hold of Clawdia, stilled only by curiousity as she noticed another Koopa beside Warutius.
The latter introduced the new apparition as his brother, Prince Bowser Koopa. He had none of his brother’s admirable qualities; he was chubby and unhygienic, and there was a certain aura of… simple-mindedness about him. Clawdia was mildly repulsed, and felt an immediate dislike of the fellow taking shape in her mind. However, all emotion evaporated into a numb shock when the maltreated young duchess heard her father’s next words…
"Your mother and I have arranged for you to be Prince Bowser’s bride."
***
The wedding took place two weeks later; it was a grand affair, with nobles of all sorts attending the ceremony. Warutius did not attend; he had vanished from the kingdom, and was nowhere to be found.
Some years later…
Warutius had been found in an ethereal dimension named Sub-con. He had let himself go after losing his crown and his life’s love to his brother’s greedy claws, and had become even worse than Bowser; now a widely known joke amongst Mushroom Kingdom residents, he became derogatively known as Wart. He had allowed himself to deteriorate into a repulsive beast with thoughts for nothing but himself; his two children Nick and Susan had to take care of themselves, their father not particularly caring how they were or what they got up to. They live in their makeshift castle in an obscure location.
Clawdia, now a mother of eight, has settled into her life at Castle Koopa; resigned to her fate, she has resolved to be a caring mother to her children. She is still quiet and withdrawn; however, being re-introduced to sunlight and a somewhat healthy eating schedule has restored her former good looks. Clawdia has developed a solid affection for her husband; she admits to seeing his good points amongst the bad, and he in turn loves her deeply, though he wouldn’t be caught dead admitting it in public.
The queen still has her private moments of heartache, but she refuses to let her pain overwhelm her life. Instead, she drowns her sorrow in her love for her family. Have you ever tasted her home cooking? The secret ingredient is emotion, and lots of it. ;)
Quote Clawdia: "I learnt very early not to let my past ruin my future. I’m going to raise my children to be fine young Koopas, and they’ll never have to feel the pain that I went through. I’ve moved on, and I’m happy now… My children deserve to be happy too. And I’ll make sure they always are, even if it’s the only thing I’m good at. I don’t need anything else… I have my family, and they are my life. I just hope they know how much I love them."
