Petey Piranha was not always a hulking, floral behemoth, as he was once just an ordinary Piranha Plant. Many, many years ago when the Mario Bros. were still just babies, the evil Shroob alien race invaded the Mushroom Kingdom and began taking various creatures and mutating them into hideous monsters. One of them was a Piranha Plant, which they then transformed into the colossal plant, Petey Piranha. They sent him to a cave beneath the Gritzy Desert, and used him as a means of disposing of their enemies by letting Petey swallow them whole. However, the Shroobs soon forgot about him, and he grew hungrier and hungrier. When Princess Peach was testing out Prof. E. Gadd's new time machine, she was kidnapped by the Shroobs and sentenced to be eaten by Petey. Eager for a decent meal, Petey snapped up Peach and swallowed her whole. The Shoobs then captured the reporter, Kylie Koopa, and sent her to be swallowed by Petey too. The Mario Bros. soon found and defeated Petey, freeing his only victims, Kylie and Peach.
Years later, Petey decided to go and live a more peaceful life on the sunny resort of Isle Delfino. But then Bowser Jr. attacked and he used his stolen Gaddbrush to give Petey strange powers. Petey was then sent out to Bianco Hills and used his new powers to cover the peaceful fields with muck. He lived atop a windmill, where he could see everything and observe his glorious and filthy "kingdom". When Mario came along, he recognized him and was immediately enraged. He thought that he was now invincible with his new powers, but found out that he also had a weakness: water. Mario, armed with the FLUDD, drenched Petey and bloated him with his least favorite substance. Bowser Jr. hadn't given up, and gave Petey a second Shine Sprite to guard. Petey sat on top of a large hill and waited for a while, and eventually got tired and fell fast asleep. Mario then used water to give Petey an unexpected wake-up call. Petey immediately woke up and once again challenged Mario. He had trained since his last defeat, though, and somehow used his large leaf hands to hover above the ground, where he had an advantage. But this made Petey tired, and Mario once again bloated and stomped him when he fell to the ground, ending Petey's reign of terror over Bianco Hills.
Fed up with being defeated, he built his own racing kart from the pipes he enjoyed. Along with his old buddy who helped conquer Isle Delfino, King Boo, they raced against Mario and his friends and enemies. Now no longer committed to doing evil deeds, he enjoys playing sports like tennis and golf.
