Physical Appearance: A green Yoshi with china blue eyes and violet spikes on her back. At her tail's base are pale blue speckles (considered a blessed omen in the Yoshi tribes, though Atara hardly thinks herself blessed after losing her daughter).
Personality: Very withdrawn and likes to keep to herself as much as possible. The berating she's recieved for her marriage to a Koopa has made her very meek in public. The recent loss of her daughter, Karma, in the struggle at Cookie Mountain has made her into quite the pessimist about life.
Atara was born into a well-to-do family in the Silverleaf Yoshi Tribe (located at the base of Cookie Mountain in a small gathering of woods). The fact she had been born with colored markings (her tail speckles) had made many think that she was to be their next appointed leader. She was given special care by the tribe while growing up, while her parents dutifully attempted to fix her up with whom they believed to be only the finest in males to choose as her mate one day.
When Atara was about 16 in age, the
tribe took a prisoner... a Koopa scout from Dark Land. As a trespasser
and traitor reptile, the Koopa had been sentenced to die. As he sat in
prison awaiting his fate, Atara (who
had never seen a Koopa before) stole
away in the night to speak with him. She had gone solely to learn what
he was and why her tribe hated him, but ended up with more than she had
bargained for.
The prisoner, who revealed his name
to be Raymond, explained the ongoing war between the Yoshies and the Koopas
and that the Koopas had come to hate the Yoshies due to the aid they had
offered Dark Land's
antagonists in the past and therefore
were set to be eliminated as traitors. He, he said, had been sent up ahead
by the troop he was with to scout the land for a place to spend the night
when he had been captured.
Raymond pleaded with Atara to not let
her tribe kill him, and Atara eventually caved in and set him free... though
it was not the last she saw of him. Raymond, after returning home safely,
took to creeping into
the Silverleaf's land at night to see
her. At first, it had been simply to thank her for her kindness and speak
with her a bit as one of the few people he could call a friend, but it
gradually became more.
They carried on their secret affair for the better part of a year, until one day Atara surprised Raymond by greeting him with more than just her smile... she had laid a lovely green-speckled egg. Realizing that they could no longer keep their love a secret, Atara appealed to her parents, explaining everything. They were appalled, of course, and demanded that she never see Raymond again and that her egg be crushed. She refused to do so, and told them that if the tribe would not marry them she would leave it behind altogether and be privately married in Nimbus Land.
After many tiresome arguments, her parents grudgingly agreed to the wedding and they were married in the public eye of the tribe... much to the disgust of many. The egg hatched not long afterward and Atara's daughter, Karma, was born. For a long time the family lived in peace and Atara was pleased to learn that Raymond had been gradually accepted into the tribe as one of their own and little Karma hadn't caused much of a stir at all. However, bliss wasn't to be had so easily.
Shortly after Karma's 15th birthday,
chaos broke loose as two hoo-mans calling themselves Mario and Luigi tore
through the land, seizing foliage and enslaving Yoshies to ride upon as
they went about their mad quest to save a young lady the Koopa King had
captured. In the confusion, Atara and Raymond lost track of their daughter
as they hid from the destruction. When the dust had cleared, Karma was
nowhere in sight.
Atara keeps the faith that her daughter
is alive and well somewhere, and in the meantime, sticks close to her husband.
