Mario 3
More about the Angry Sun...
Games: Super Mario Bros. 3
Maybe he's not angry, maybe he's just misunderstood...
Or maybe he's always in a rage since he's constantly burning up!
In the Real World there's just one Sun (with other stars at an inconsequentially long distance), but in the Mushroom World there are several. Some, as in Paper Mario, have the ability to talk but can be thwarted by too much cloud cover. And others are in a constant state of being ticked off and will attack any nearby heroic plumbers.
Such was the case in Mario 3, where in what otherwise appeared to be a normal level (apart from the strange, sandy icon on the map), this viciously scowling fire spirit suddenly sprang to life and began swooping down at Mario. Mario had to dodge the Angry Sun throughout the entire level, while also negotiating whirlwinds, Troopa enemies, and pits of quicksand, making this one of the more difficult levels in the early goings of that adventure. The Angry Sun could be defeated with a Koopa shell (or a sledgehammer, I guess, if you were cheating), though standing around long enough to be able to attack him wasn't necessarily any safer. If the Angry Sun was defeated, the sky wouldn't go dark or anything, so we know there's another, more benevolent Sun out there. The Angry Sun would also appear in a level in Dark Land, ironically. After this, though, the Angry Sun seemed to vanish into a permanent solar eclipse until finally reappearing in the background in Mario Kart DS.
After not appearing since Season One, the Angry Sun came screaming back into Season Nine all fired up and cremated Starslap, but even his fiery rage could not consume the L33t Hamm3r Broz as the Sun was knocked out. The Angry Sun was given a second chance against the L33ts in Round Two, but had apparently burned out and was defeated again. Thus the career of Angry Sun sets for now.
