Here are the results of all my polls... well, all the polls since I decided to start saving the results, at least. Hey, it's better than nothing. Stop looking at me that way! Just scroll down and find out what the tourists felt about these complicated, controversial issues.

My comments: I'd meant for there to be a part two of sorts to this, but that didn't work out so this ended up kind of flat. I don't have a whole lot to say, but I wonder why some characters were greatly preferred as a driver or passenger. What's up with Bowser? You love him as a driver and you really love his car, but apparently he's no good on items. Baby Luigi had a pretty big change too, as did a handful of others. A lot of voters seemed to prefer their favorite character's car, but this varied by character, like how Baby Luigi went from second overall to having one of the least favorite cars.. But the most interesting observation I made is that the most popular racer overall, Bowser Jr., ranked last in a previous poll about favorite new character to the Kart series. So, I guess people are still making their mind up about him...

Koopa Shell:

My comments:
Woah.
Well, I have to agree, between Hammer Bros. Suit, P-Wing, and Koopa Shell,
Hammer Bros. Suit is the coolest, hands down. It gets points for being
rare, if nothing else, and for being powerful. Although, I sorta prefer
the Fire Flower because it's more accurate than the hammers' slow arcs.
I was sort of surprised that Warp Whistle and 1-Up Mushroom didn't make
it to the finals, and feel that at least the former of those would have
had a chance at taking on the Power-Up Party. Still, I don't mind rallying
behind the Hammer Bros. Suit. I'm sure it has all our bests interests in
mind.
Which character should star in his own game?
In this special poll, tourists had two weeks
in which to nominate one character each, and then two weeks in which to
assign ten points across the candidates as they found fit. Characters who
received more than one nomination received an extra two points for each
one. Now, here are the results!
Winner: Bowser
- 86 + 18 = 104
Runner-Up: Birdo - 59.7
+ 2 = 61.7
Third: Waluigi - 43 + 2 = 45
Fourth: Iggy - 43.3
Fifth: Peach - 38 + 4 = 42
Sixth: Koopa Troopa - 34 + 2 = 36
Seventh: Ludwig - 34
Eighth: Chain Chomp - 33
Ninth: Hammer Bros. - 19.3
Tenth: Mallow - 19
Eleventh: Popple - 18.6
Twelth: Wario - 17
Thirteenth: Big Boo - 16
Fourteenth: King Boo; Koopa the Quick - 12
Sixteenth: Game Guy - 8
Seventeeth: Naval Piranha - 6
Last: Boomer - 1
My Comments: Wow, an impressive victory for Bowser, with nearly twice as many points as second place! Even without the 18 point bonus stemming from the two weeks of nominating, Bowser never fell out of first place. Early in the third week it looked like Peach or Chain Chomp might give him a run for it, but Bowser's points kept flowing in and his opponents ran out of support, falling into fifth and eighth respectively. Bowser got so many votes in the first two weeks that I nearly called the poll off, seeing as how no one else earned more than three nominations, but I decided I wanted to see how it turned out. The tourists are quite clear: it is time for Mario's archenemy to get a game of his own. Fine by me!
As far as the other candidates go... Birdo was a surprise second place finisher. She did not seem to be doing very well early on in the voting, but shortly before polls closed she picked up a whole bunch of points from a few big fans. Even so, I didn't notice how well she was doing until just now when I tallied the results. I honestly didn't know she was so popular...
Third place for Waluigi... how? Seems to me he should be in a real game before running for star... you know, lack of experience and all that. He did surprisingly well, and he might have done even better had Wario not been on the ballot, as some tourists split their points between the two. Seems the tourists like villains, and Wario already has his games...
Iggy finished highest out of the candidates who only received one vote in the nomination round, and was only knocked out of the top three by Waluigi's bonus points. Not only did Iggy receive no bonus points, he also didn't receive too many big-point ballots. Instead, many voters gave him a point or two, offering the majority of their points to other characters. Although Iggy didn't win, enough tourists like him that he would probably be a suitable choice for star. He might also have been looking at second had Ludwig not been on the ballot.
Chain Chomp... I just have to ask, what kind of game could he possibly star in? We're not talking about Chainless Chomp here, remember. If we were, maybe we could have Mario Pac-man or something. No, Chain Chomp was nominated, and if there's one thing that all video game stars have in common, it's that they're mobile. Chain Chomp seems to be a bit lacking in that department. Still, he did pretty well considering.
And then, there's Boomer. Some voters expressed the view that they don't know who Boomer is. He's a mini-boss in the Keep from Mario RPG, and is fought just before Exor. His nomination was perhaps the most unexpected, and apparently voters didn't appreciate it. In fact, it seems he couldn't even win votes from his own proponent. Boomer must be a member of the Independent Party, as all he has is himself...
Which of the newest
Mario games do you currently own?
None: 44%
Double Dash only: 13%
Superstar Saga only; Superstar Saga
and Double Dash; all three: 11% each
Mario Party 5 and Double Dash: 6%
Mario Party 5 only: 3%
Mario Party 5 and Superstar Saga: 2%
In all, each
game was owned by the following percentage of voting tourists:
Double Dash: 41%
Superstar Saga: 35%
Mario Party 5: 22%
My comments:
This
was a poorly timed poll, I'm afraid. I ought to have waited until after
Christmas, as I know many tourists were waiting until then to get their
long-awaited games. Double Dash must really have been the most anticipated,
though, seeing as more people have it than the others despite its being
released last. Nearly half of my tourists don't have any of these games?
So sad, so sad...

2. Birdo (+11)
2. Parakoopa

4. Baby Luigi

4. Waluigi (+7)
6. Daisy (+4)
7. Baby Mario (-11)
7. Diddy Kong (-11)
9. Toadette (-29)
10. Bowser Jr.
(-32)
My comments:
Well, Koopa Troopa is kinda cute... I guess Nintendo shouldn't have removed
him. It seems that Bowser Jr. is still as controversial as ever. He got
a ton of negative votes, enough to get him into last place overall, but
he did get the second highest number of positive votes. I guess people
either love him or hate him, even if more choose the latter. I'm glad to
see most people aren't impressed with this Toadette character. That's a
lack of creativity on Nintendo's part if ever I saw one. As a side note,
it was revealed to me after I made this poll that Toad and Toadette are
actually secret characters. There's also a second set of secret characters,
which I did not know about when I made this poll, who I will not spoil
here.
Overall, which system has the best Mario
games?
Super Nintendo: 42%
Nintendo 64: 21%
GameCube: 19%
Nintendo: 17%
Gameboy Advance: 2%
Gameboy ; Virtual Boy ; Other: 0%
My comments: My biggest surprise is
that the Gameboy Advance didn't get more votes. Many people who voted for
Super Nintendo said they picked it over Nintendo because of Mario All-Stars,
but all those games are on the GBA now too. I wonder if, perhaps, the difference
between the SNES and GBA is Mario RPG, at this point. Of course, tourists
might just have been annoyed that All-Stars had been broken up into a bunch
of different, more expensive titles. Otherwise, I agree that the SNES era
was a great time for Mario. In my eyes, the GameCube has yet to come close.
Mario 64 was a fine adventure, but its system didn't have enough other
classics to back up the first. And of course the Nintendo has sort of been
replaced by All-Stars... though sometimes I do still prefer to play the
true original.
How do you spell the name of the guy
with the black face and round body?
Bob-omb: 73%
Bob-Omb: 18%
Bomb-Omb: 5%
Bob-Bomb; I don't know anyone like
that...: 3%
Black Boo; Bob; Bobomb; Bomb-bomb;
Bom-omb; Bom; Bomb; Boom Boom: 0%
My Comments: The correct spelling is,
of course, "Bob-omb". But this character's name is misspelled more than
any other's, with Piranha Plant and Lakitu coming in as runners-up. I expected
to see more varied results in this poll, but apparently most people can
spell his name when specifically asked to, or at least when presented with
choices, which suggests that many tourists are simply careless when making
their submissions. Hm... Interestingly enough, no one complained that the
description in the question could also apply to Chomp.
How much are you willing to pay for
a copy of Mario RPG on your GBA?
$30 - Just the standard price: 35%
$20 - It's a remake, so it should cost
less: 19%
$40 - I want to play so bad that I'll
pay a bit extra: 16%
$0 - I've played the original and don't
want a remake: 12%
$100ish - I'll buy a GBA just for this
game!: 9%
$50+ - Whatever it takes to sweaten
the deal for Nintendo: 7%
$0 - I haven't played this game and
don't want to: 2%
$0 - I don't
have a GBA: 0%
$1-19 - Maybe
a rent, or if I find it cheap enough: 0%
My Comments:
Well, clearly an overwhelming majority are willing to pay for Mario RPG
Advance. It's a bit discouraging that a large percentage of people were
not willing to pay the full 30 bucks for a standard GBA title. Nonetheless,
there is clearly interest among Mario's fans. However, Nintendo looks to
sell games not only to Mario fans, but to everyone. Considering that a
full third of Mario fans aren't willing to pay full price for Mario RPG,
what would that ratio be for gamers overall? Surely there would be significantly
less interest. And, given that working out the details with Square could
be difficult and expensive, one can hardly blame Nintendo's apparent reluctance.
How long do you spend playing videogames each
day?
More than 4 Hours: 41%
3 Hours: 17%
1 1/2 Hours: 15%
2 Hours: 14%
4 Hours: 14%
1 Hour: 9%
Never or Very Little: 3%
30 Minutes: 2%
My Comments: I thought that... er,
normal people would play for a few hours each day, but most respondants
claimed to play more than four hours per day, the highest choice on the
ballot. Of the remaining tourists, most said they played either three or
four hours, with only two tourists claiming to never play games and one
claiming to play only a half hour each day. Hey, if you're spending so
much time playing games, when do you have time to visit my site? Hmm...
Which element of a videogame
is most important?
Fun Factor: Winner
Story: Second
Replayability: Third
(Exact results not available)
My Comments: I was not surprised to
see that Fun Factor came out the winner. I was surprised to see that Story
came in a close second, with Replayability a more distant third. Now, I
can't understand how Story could have been ranked so highly by my tourists.
Most people who go to Lemmy's Land are fans of the Mario series, yet the
Mario games have about the simplest storylines you could ask for. Most
of the games, even one of the RPGs (which generally have a deeper storyline),
simply have Mario go save the princess, with little or no in-game explanation.
If this kind of story is good enough to keep fans of good storylines interested,
I'd be curious to see what kind of story would fall short.
