Toad: Hello, and welcome to the official KTCG Battle Demo! I'll be the host, referee, commentator... heck, I'm the all-around helpful guy!
Wario: Shut up and get on with it!
Toad: All right, all right! Wario and Luigi have graciously agreed to participate in this demonstration.
Luigi: We have a score to settle, Wario!
Toad: Guys, time and place! First, let me provide our spectators with some useful links. The official rulebook of the KTCG is here, and the condensed spoiler list for cards used in this battle is here. Both will open in a new window, so don't worry about having to switch back and forth.
Wario: Would you shut your yap already? I'm growing old over here!
Toad: Nearly ready! We've already done the coin flip, and Luigi is going first! Draw your cards, gentlemen - that's seven each from the top of your respective decks.
Luigi: Duh, we know that!
Toad: Well yeah, but the spectators don't. That's why they're here. Now duh on you.
Luigi: *grumble*
Toad: Spectators, note the nine lands on the play area, representing the areas of the Mushroom Kingdom. Our competitors will be vying for control of them.
Luigi: Can I start now?
Toad: Um... yes! Go ahead!
Luigi: *Fi*-nally. It's the beginning of my turn, so I draw a card. Now I play Jelectro into Underground Land.
Toad: Luigi has played a Basic Minion into a corner land, as players must do on their first turn.
Luigi: Done.
Wario: My turn! I draw a card, and play Bob-Omb into Ice Land. I give him one Lightning Energy. End turn.
Toad: Wario has attached the correct elemental Energy to his Minion, enabling it to use any of its attacks that require only one Energy - for Bob-Omb, that happens to be both. Now it's the second round. Time for the players to advance!
Luigi: I draw a card... and play Super Koopa in Underground Land. I attach a Water Energy to Super Koopa, and another to Jelectro.
Toad: Super Koopa is a ?-type Minion, meaning he can utilize any type of Energy.
Luigi: I also play Foundation into Underground Land. End turn.
Toad: Foundation is a Building. You have to play a Foundation in order to play any other Building.
Wario: Here we go! I draw a card, then play another Bob-Omb into Ice Land, and advance the first one to Pipe Land.
Toad: Wario has used his Minion to invade Pipe Land! Now he controls two areas. Since Pipe Land shares a border with Underground Land, Wario's Minions and Luigi's Minions are now able to attack each other.
Wario: Indeed they are! I attack Jelectro with Explode!
Luigi: Jelectro suffers a mere 10 damage from your attack.
Toad: Luigi puts one damage counter on Jelectro, representing 10 points of damage. Since Wario attacked, his turn is over.
Luigi: I draw a card, and play Green Koopa into Underground Land.
Toad: Luigi is using a two-type deck. He'll need to be sure to find the correct Energy for his Air and Water Minions.
Luigi: Now, I upgrade my Foundation with a Railroad Tracks.
Toad: Luigi has played a more useful Building on top of Foundation. As long as Foundation is upgraded like this, it can't take any damage.
Luigi: I call on Railroad Tracks to draw an extra card, then attach two Air Energies to Green Koopa and use Spin Attack against Bob-Omb.
Toad: Green Koopa can only reach the Bob-Omb in Pipe Land, so that's automatically the target. Wario must put down two damage counters on his Minion.
Wario: This isn't over! I draw a card, and play Chain Chomp to Pipe Land.
Toad: New Minions can be played into any land that you already control.
Wario: Now I use the attack "Bob-Omb Buddies".
Toad: This special ability causes no damage. Instead, it allows Wario to search his deck for a particular card. It still counts as an attack, though, so his turn is over.
Luigi: I draw a card, and now I evolve my Green Koopa to Green Paratroopa.
Toad: Green Paratroopa is the next evolutionary form of Green Koopa. Luigi plays the Stage 1 on top of the Basic Minion. All of Green Koopa's stats and abilities are replaced by Green Paratroopa's, but any Energy or damage he's accumulated carries over.
Luigi: Now I have Super Koopa use Cape Spin against Bob-Omb.
Toad: Bob-Omb already has 20 damage. The additional 10 makes his damage equivalent to his HP, and he is knocked out. He goes to Wario's discard pile, along with any cards attached to him.
Wario: Argh! Well, it doesn't matter. After drawing a card, I play the Rob-Omb I obtained last turn.
Toad: Wario has evolved his other Bob-Omb!
Wario: I abandon Ice Land to advance Rob-Omb to Pipe Land.
Toad: Wario has given up Ice Land! When a player leaves a land by any means, they cannot re-invade it on their next turn.
Wario: Now I give two Lightning Energies to Chain Chomp, and have him use the Chomp attack on Jelectro.
Toad: Jelectro now has 30 damage, but since his HP is 40, he is not knocked out.
Luigi: I draw a card, then use Railroad Tracks to draw another. I attach a second Water Energy to Jelectro, then immediately discard it to use Recover.
Toad: This ability allows Luigi to *remove* two damage counters from Jelectro.
Wario: My turn! I draw a card, and play two Lightning Energies to Rob-Omb in order to use Group Explosion on Jelectro.
Toad: This attack requires Wario to flip a coin to determine the amount of damage done.
Wario: Since Rob-Omb has two Lightning Energies, I flip the coin twice. Both times are heads. Jelectro receives 40 damage and is knocked out after all!
Toad: Wow, what a turn-around!
Luigi: Just you wait! I'm drawing a card!
Toad: Oh no! What does he have planned?
Luigi: I also use Railroad Tracks, then play Supply Line - three more cards for me!
Toad: Supply Line is a Spell card! You can play it any time during your turn to get an immediate effect.
Luigi: Now I evolve Super Koopa into Air Koopa, and give him *five* Air Energies!
Toad: Oh my goodness!
Wario: I'm in trouble...
Luigi: Now I attack Rob-Omb with Wind Speed, for a total of 50 damage.
Toad: And in one fell swoop, Rob-Omb is knocked out! He goes to the discard pile, along with his Energy and his Basic form.
Wario: Fine, be that way! I draw a card, then play Midnight Raid to take away two of Air Koopa's Air Energies.
Toad: Ooh, another Spell! Luigi is forced to discard some Energy.
Wario: I evolve Chain Chomp to Unchained Chomp, give him an extra Lightning Energy, and use Free Range against Air Koopa.
Toad: Air Koopa suffers 30 damage!
Luigi: Enough of this! I'm out of Energy to play, so Green Paratroopa uses Flying Tackle against Unchained Chomp.
Wario: Don't be dumb! I draw a card, and use Free Range on Air Koopa again. He's knocked out!
Luigi: He's what? Oh no!
Toad: Ha-ha - pay attention, Luigi!
Luigi: Shut up! I draw a card, and use another Flying Tackle. Now Unchained Chomp has 60 damage!
Wario: That doesn't matter! I draw a card, and play Rotten Mushroom! I'll throw away this extra Lightning Energy with it.
Toad: Wario discards an Energy from his hand to remove a whopping four damage counters from Unchained Chomp!
Wario: Darn right! Now I use Free Range against Green Paratroopa!
Luigi: Oh no! I draw a card, and retreat Green Paratroopa by invading Sky Land!
Toad: Luigi has abandoned his land and his Building! He no longer receives the benefit of Railroad Tracks.
Wario: What kind of a dumb move was that? I play a Rocky Wrench into Pipe Land, and advance him into Underground Land. Now your Railroad Tracks belong to me!
Luigi: D'oh!
Wario: I'll help myself to another card, then attack Green Paratroopa with Free Range again.
Luigi: What are you talking about? Unchained Chomp can't reach!
Wario: Think again, fool! Free Range can be used on *any* enemy target!
Luigi: Argh! What was I thinking?
Toad: Obviously not about the fine print!
Luigi: Hey, whose side are you on?
Toad: Uh... shutting up now.
Luigi: Fine. Green Paratroopa has 60 damage, and is still alive. But I can't retreat or kill either of your Minions, and I have no more tricks to pull out of my hand. I resign.
Wario: Ha! Victory is mine!
Toad: Come on, guys, let's see how that *would* have ended.
Luigi: Why?
Toad: So our spectators will see a proper finish.
Wario: Ah, double victory will be so sweet.
Luigi: All right. I draw a card, and use Flying Tackle on Rocky Wrench, because I can.
Wario: Now I draw a card and finish off Green Paratroopa with another Free Range.
Toad: Now Luigi has no Minions on the board, but he still gets one more turn.
Luigi: I draw a card and... nope, I have no more Basic Minions.
Toad: Luigi cannot start again by playing a Basic Minion into a corner land. And since you can't take over the world without any soldiers, Wario is the winner!
Wario: I told you so.
Toad: Fine, so you did. Spectators, did you remember those links at the top? Okay, good. Now go play your own battles!
Luigi: I'm so ashamed...
