Congratulations on your purchase of Luigi’s Mansion! Ha ha, enough with the advertisements, but I do believe and hope that you will enjoy playing this game for Nintendo GameCube. You have about eight to ten hours of ghost catching, money collecting fun ahead of you.
This Walkthrough will give you tips on how to catch all the different kinds of ghosts in this game, including every portrait and boss ghost. You’ll find the best places to search for money, including the elusive golden mice and money ghosts. Finally, you’ll learn how to earn all the keys and solve every puzzle. In short, this Walkthrough will take you start to finish through the game.
While you could read this Walkthrough in its entirety, I suggest you try playing the game first and only refer to this guide when you are stuck, or read the whole thing after you are done so you can find what you missed. Although I have tried to brush past the cinema scenes and other story-telling parts of the game, you will still lose a lot of the surprise element this game can offer, which might damper your enjoyment of the game. You can use the links just above this section to skip straight to the room in the mansion you are having questions about. That way you can find the answer to your problem without finding the answers to other puzzles you haven’t tried yet.
Before starting to play I suggest you read the Luigi’s Mansion manual, at least for the controls. I also suggest you make use of the in-game training area. The game’s controls can be a bit tricky, and though this Walkthrough will tell you what to do, you’re the one who will need to figure out how to use the controls to make it happen. Essentially, the controls are this:
Control Stick: Move Luigi.
A: Check an item that is next to you. Perhaps some money will come out of it… or a ghost, or nothing. A also opens doors and, if there is nothing for Luigi to do, he’ll call for Mario.
B: You can use this button to turn off your flashlight in dark rooms. This way you can get closer to ghosts before you flash them.
X: View the map of the mansion and find the location of the next unlocked room.
Y: Enter first person mode and scan the room for anything that looks suspicious. You can aim it at an object to press A and see Luigi’s comments. Be careful because Luigi can’t move in this mode and ghosts and other nasty things still can.
Z: This button is a little hard to reach, but use it to check your inventory.
R: Turn on your vacuum and try to pull stuff in.
L: Shoot elements out of your vacuum. The further down you press L, the more of the element you’ll shoot out and the faster you’ll use up that element’s power.
C Stick: Aim your vacuum. Left and right are from Luigi’s perspective while up and down are reversed.
Along with catching ghosts, you will want to collect a lot of money if you want to receive the best ending. Without giving too much away, let me just say that the best ending requires you to collect 100 million dollars. It’s tough but possible, and this Walkthrough will guide you to every coin, bill, and bar that I know of, as well as every jewel and diamond.
I’ve rambled for too long. Everything else of importance should be explained in the Walkthrough. Enjoy your game!

Foyer
Welcome to Luigi’s Mansion! After watching the intro, you will end up in the Foyer. You won’t be able to use any of your cool moves yet, so best move along. So far as Luigi knows nothing is out of the ordinary, but that will change really fast.
No one seems to be around, but I bet someone is watching. If you step into the circle pattern just in front of you there will be a quick cut scene of the chandelier above you falling down and you’ll have only a second or two to move out of the way, so be quick about it. Whether or not you avoid it someone (or something) will laugh at you, but you’ll be hurt if you get hit. Usually when you get hurt you lose coins, but you have none to lose now. You can also get hurt in this room if you hit the door just beyond that circle, which is protected by some kind of force field.
You can easily avoid getting hurt by avoiding the circle area and just using the stairs, at the left or right of the room. There are two doors up there, so try to open them (A button). Both are locked though, but you need to try. Come back down the stairs and there will be a cut scene of a key appearing out of nowhere. Convenient! Pick up the key and then you can open the upstairs door between the two staircases. Use that door and move on to the next room.
Go back to the top.
Luigi gets the scare of his life (so far) upon entering this room. An orange ghost will appear, and what’s a poor plumber to do? Fortunately, an old man is also in the room, despite its previously being locked. He will capture the ghost, saving Luigi in the process, but he won’t have an easy time of it. After the capture he will talk to you and reveal himself to be Professor E Gadd, the villain of this game… ok, not really, but anyway…
Gadd will take you to his house… er, shack, conveniently just outside the mansion. He’ll talk to you some more, and he knows a little bit about Mario’s whereabouts. But the real important part is that he’ll give you the Poltergust 3000, which you need in order to catch ghosts, as well as the Game Boy Horror. You can use that to look around in first person mode, check your inventory, and view the mansion map.
You will get the option to go to a training room, and I suggest you do. E Gadd will talk you through the controls as you work on capturing a few orange ghosts for yourself. Don’t worry, you can’t die here. Also don’t worry if you can’t catch all the ghosts. Even after beating the game I still couldn’t do it.
When you feel you are ready (one or two rounds should be enough), you can head back to the mansion. You can go to the Gallery if you wish, but there’s nothing to see just yet.
Go back to the top.
Back in the mansion! Apparently, you’ve had a visitor since you left; Toad is sobbing a bit to the left. Be aware that the chandelier will still fall, and go talk to him. He’ll give you his sob story, and if you want to hear his Mario impression you can tell him you won’t help. However, you’ll probably want to save sometime, so eventually tell him you will help. Then you can save your game any time you talk to him… if you have a Memory Card, anyway.
There is a chest of drawers you can open near Toad (use A, or it might be better to get into the habit of examining with the vacuum), though I have never found anything in them. You can pull off the sheet to the right of the blocked door to reveal a mirror. And now, the mirror trick!
Mirror Trick: If you want to get back to the Foyer quickly, find a room that has a mirror in it (but not a really long one, like in Area Two’s Mirror Room). Use the Game Boy Horror, then select the mirror. You will warp back to the Foyer.
You can warp now, but it won’t help, though it is kind of funny to warp to where you started. You may get a few coins if you vacuum the light above the guarded door. Then go up the stairs to the second floor, where you’ll find some coins on the floor. Unfortunately, you will never find coins so easily past Area One. Use your vacuum on the two vases as well. Then go near the stairs and vacuum the chandelier. Some coins and bills should come out, maybe even a gold bar. Run (or hurry, Luigi can’t run) down the stairs and vacuum them up. Try not to stand under the chandelier, which will still fall even though Toad turned the lights on.
When you’re done collecting money, go back to the Parlor. By the way, if you are not interested in collecting all the money then by all means just skip those parts of the Walkthrough.
Go back to the top.
This time you’ll actually be able to go into the room. For a time there will be nothing dangerous here. There are two cabinets you can open, one tall and one wide. A chest of drawers on the right side of the room may contain some money, and so might the light fixture hanging in the middle of the room. Always vacuum any light fixtures you see! Once you’ve done these things, it would appear that there is nothing else to do… but there is.
In the middle of the room on the far wall are two sets of three purple candles. Aim your vacuum in their general direction to extinguish all of them. You might have already done this if you opened the wide cabinet with your vacuum, so get the rest of the money in the room later if that happened. The pictures on the walls will talk to you after the candles are out, and at the end of their speech an orange ghost will come out. Oh no! Well, before we go on, let’s finally get you two properly introduced…
Orange Ghost: These are the weakest ghosts you’ll have to catch. They will attack if they get up close to you, but you can easily back away if you’re not in a corner. To catch them, first hit them with a flashlight beam, then vacuum them up. They have 10 HP so they shouldn’t take long to bag. If you take too long to start vacuuming after flashing they will disappear, and you’ll need to flash them again when they reappear. However, they don’t disappear very quickly.
Hopefully you learned from E Gadd how to catch a ghost. Aim your flashlight at him, then press R to start vacuuming him. Point the Control Stick and the C Stick in the opposite direction to where the ghost is in relation to Luigi. When his HP gets drained to 0 he’ll be drawn into the vacuum and caught.
After you catch the first ghost more will appear, but only one at a time. Catch them all, and then when you get the last one the lights will turn on and a chest will appear. Open it to get a key. You can move on to the next room through the door in the back right corner, or you can go back to the Foyer and search all the potential money locations for Hearts, each of which will restore 10 HP for your 100 HP life.
You may notice in this room that there is a table with a sheet on it. You may want to remove that sheet with your vacuum before releasing the ghosts. If you don’t, your vacuum could get stuck on it when you are making a capture. Remember this for covered tables (or beds, or whatever) in other rooms.
Note that whenever you go back to the Foyer rooms will be reset. That means you can check all the potential money spots again. Although money spots are most likely to have money only the first time you check them, they can have money again. Go back and forth between rooms to pick up some extra cash.
Unfortunately, if you leave a room without capturing all the normal ghosts in it they will all come back, so be wary of that.
Go back to the top.
A very simple room. There are three chests of drawers and two light fixtures, and you should test them all for money. But first you’ll need to deal with a few ghosts, since the door you entered will become barred, blocking your return to the Parlor or Foyer.
The first ghost to appear will be orange, so you should have no problem. But then, a purple ghost will show up. Let’s see his stats!
Purple Ghost: These ghosts are a bit harder than the orange variety. They have 20 HP and disappear much faster after being flashed. They also have a long range attack, so if you see them rear back, quickly either flash them or back away.
Catch the purple ghost, and then two orange ones will appear at the same time. Oh, the pain! What ever will you do?
When there is more than one ghost around: One strategy is to flash all but one of the ghosts. All the flashed ghosts will disappear for a while, so you can take on the remaining ghost one-on-one. Or, you can wait until all the ghosts are right near each other. Then you can flash them all at the same time and vacuum them all at once. If you don’t get them all at once then use the C Stick to point away from where the targeted ghost is going while using the Control Stick to steer Luigi away from the other ghosts in the room. You’ll make a slower capture but avoid attacks.
After you catch all the ghosts the lights will turn on and the door behind you will become unbarred. You won’t get a key though… no fun. Move on! The next room is through the door in the left wall.
Go back to the top.
Three cabinets could contain money… but two of them actually contain ghosts right now. There are orange ghosts in here, and you’ll meet banana ghosts as well.
Banana Ghost: I was surprised to see these in Area One, as they are not all that common and they are pretty tough. These large green ghosts throw bananas at you. If you hit one you’ll slip and get hurt. If the floor gets too cluttered you can vacuum up some of the peels. These ghosts have 40 HP and will disappear very quickly after being flashed.
A banana ghost will appear along with an orange ghost, so be careful. After a while ghosts will stop appearing as you walk around, but the lights will still be off. Open the cabinet on the far right of the room, but be ready for a money ghost!
Money Ghost: If you find one of these, you are in luck. If you successfully capture one you’ll get lots of coins and bills, even a gold bar or a jewel. (Ooh… Jewel…) They only have 10 HP and don’t fight- but they are very quick, and they will disappear really fast after you flash them. If they disappear they will never come back (unless you reset the game). If they appear but you don’t flash them they will speed around the room until you do. They will only appear when their room is dark, so you need to search for them before turning the lights on.
After attempting to catch the money ghost, open the cabinet in the center of the room. It may have money in it. Finally, open the cabinet on the left, perhaps with the vacuum rather than A. An orange ghost will come out; catch him to turn the lights on. The key will appear on top of a shelf near the leftmost cabinet. Use your vacuum to pull it down. The key goes to the other door leading out of the Foyer, but don’t go unlock it just yet. There is a door on the left side of the Wardrobe Room, so give it a try.
Go back to the top.
You have found your second Toad of the game! Talk to him to have him turn the lights on, then save if you want. This area has very little, but you’ll want to remember about the three little plants that are here.
Go back to the Foyer and approach the door you can now unlock. E Gadd will stop you and tell you about portrait ghosts, and so will I.
Portrait Ghosts: There are 23 of these around the mansion; 4 of them are also boss ghosts. You’ll want to catch them, but they’re not like normal ghosts. You’ll need to do something special in order to make them show their heart so you can start vacuuming. For a hint on what to do you can turn away from the ghost (they are invisible if you are looking at them), then use your Game Boy Horror. Select their heart and read what it says. Or, just read this guide. To catch a portrait ghost, first do the something special, then vacuum as if they were a normal ghost. Point the two Sticks away from them if you can, but use the Control Stick to maneuver yourself around obstacles or any projectiles they may throw at you, and into a corner if possible. After the capture or a broken vacuum connection, collect the pearls they drop. Pearls are worth money, and if you can catch the ghost in one try, rather than having the connection broken, you get bigger pearls, more money, and a better picture in E Gadd’s Gallery. All ghosts have 100 HP, excepting the third and fourth boss.
About E Gadd’s Gallery: When you capture a portrait ghost and complete the Area you are playing in, the ghost will become a picture in E Gadd’s Gallery. The frame and quality of the picture will depend on the quality of the capture. If you manage to take away at least 90 HP on the first attempt, the ghost will drop a giant pearl; collect it before it disappears and you'll get a gold frame for the gallary. If you take away 50 HP on the first attempt and collect the medium-sized pearl that gets dropped, you'll earn yourself a silver frame. Anything else and it's a bronze frame for you. For the four bosses, the frame is based on how much damage you take during the battle, the less damage the better. There is NO reward for getting gold frames, other than it might make you happy and that the bigger pearls you’ll get are worth more money. (Thank you to Cool Guy 1 for clarification on the frames issue.)
Sometimes portrait ghosts will throw Poisonous Mushroom…
Poisonous Mushrooms: Mushrooms are good for Mario, but these are purple instead of red and are very bad. They’ll bounce around the room, and if they hit Luigi he’ll lose coins and shrink for a while. Luigi can’t vacuum things while he’s small (except in one case against Chauncey), so it’s very dangerous. Sometimes they appear in potential money locations, so watch out!
Now that I’ve held you up, unlock the door. You’ll enter a hallway. Use your vacuum to collect the coins on the ground, but watch out for the mice.
Blue and Purple Mice: These appear on the floors of the hallways and a few of the rooms, like the Breaker Room in the basement. They will hurt you if you touch them, but you can vacuum them up without even flashing them. Many of them appear, though, so be on the lookout. They’re small, abundant, and easy to miss.
After you collect the coins, open the door on the far right of the hall in the wall away from the screen. But don’t open any ol’ door, because some of them are fakes!
Fake Door: These doors don’t actually lead to any room. Instead, if you try to open them they will swing open and smash you into the wall. You’ll get laughed at, and you’ll also lose coins. You’ll be flattened for so long that you won’t have time to recover those coins. You did know that you can try to recover coins you drop, right? To avoid fake doors use the map in the Game Boy Horror to make sure the door you are standing next to actually leads to a room.
If you open the door on the far right, you’ll have made it to the next room.
Go back to the top.
The first portrait ghost is in this room, but ignore him for now. First, vacuum the books on the desk and maybe earn some cash. Don’t forget to test the light fixture. Watch out for the books that fly out of the bookcase every once in a while. You can easily side step them or vacuum them up.
If you go to the back of the room and use the Game Boy Horror you may spot a piece of cheese on the floor. Eww! Actually, it’s good for you, so long as you don’t eat it. If you select it, a gold mouse will come out. Time for another bio thingy!
Gold Mouse: If you want to get the 100 million dollars you’ll need for the best ending you’ll want to find these. If you vacuum one up lots of money will appear for your collecting pleasure. I know of three that appear randomly at fixed spots in the mansion; if you miss seeing them or catching them, check back later. Five appear when you use the Game Boy Horror and inspect the piece of cheese on the floor in five rooms; these mice only appear once though, so if you miss them, they’re gone. Like regular mice you do not need to flash them before vacuuming, and they will only appear when it’s dark.
Catch the gold mouse, collect your money, then go to work on the first portrait ghost, Neville.
Neville: This is an easy capture, at least for someone experienced. You’ll need to turn away from him, then wait until he yawns. When he does, spin around, flash him, and vacuum him up. Don’t forget to collect the pearls!
After you catch Neville the lights will turn on and a chest will appear. The key it contains goes to the door at the far left of the hall. Use it.
According to Leo, there is a money ghost hiding in the chair behind the desk.
Go back to the top.
This room contains the second portrait ghost. Before worrying about her, check the drawers on the left and right of the room. Vacuum the fan on the ceiling until a bunch of bills fall down. There is a plant in the back left corner, so remember about it. You remember about the plants on Toad’s balcony, don’t you?
Actually, you’ll be able to see Toad’s balcony when you capture the portrait ghost, Lydia.
Lydia: This ghost is combing her hair in front of a mirror. She doesn’t like the cold, so let in some chilly air by opening the curtain on the right side of the room. You can do so by using the vacuum and pulling to the right, and then you’ll be able to see Toad and his balcony through the window. Lydia will complain about the cold and get up from her stool; that’s when you flash, vacuum, and catch. If you miss her she’ll close the curtain, so open it and try again.
After you catch Lydia you’ll get the key to the door just across the hall. When you enter the hall you’ll see a quick cut scene of that door and you’ll hear some baby sounds. Believe it or not, now might be a good time to save. But then again, so is any time you’re entering a new room.
When you’re ready, try that door. It’s the one in the wall closest to the screen at the left end of the hall.
Go back to the top.
Sadly, there’s not much cash in this room, save for the coins scattered around the rocking horse and possibly the light fixture. Check the cabinet next to the door to get a Super Heart, which will recover 50 HP. You can get the Super Heart as often as you want as long as you visit the Foyer after each use. Remember it when you are low on health.
Vacuum the rocking horse until the baby ghost, Chauncey, appears beside you. He will want to play, but his game is a bit violent. Back away quickly because he will try to hit you. If you are far away he will throw his three toys at you, each one starting in his crib. You can sidestep them or vacuum them up. Vacuum up the ball sitting on the floor and it will get stuck in the nozzle of the Poltergust 3000. Continue holding R and use the C Stick to aim your vacuum at Chauncey. Then release and the ball will shoot out. If the ball hits Chauncey he will get ticked. He’ll shrink you down so that he’ll have the size advantage, and then it’s time for a battle…
Boss of Area One: Chauncey: After the cut scene, move towards the screen until you reach the edge of the arena, the baby’s crib. Chauncey will cause a rocking horse to move towards him from the right side of the screen. When it reaches your horizontal it will shoot towards you. Run to the right, and keep running when it shoots towards you and you should have passed it before it hits you. Then run to the left and pass the horse coming from that direction.
Chauncey will then make two balls bounce into the crib, followed soon after by a third. You will want to avoid them as they bounce around, but it’s tough because they are large and their path is tough to predict. Do what you can, and when they leave search the crib for the third ball, which will be immobile somewhere in play. Vacuum it up and shoot it at Chauncey. Now he is weak to you, so vacuum him up as long as you can. Eventually he will break the connection.
After he does so, or if your aim with the ball was off, Chauncey will enter the crib and bounce around. He’ll either bounce to the right first or the left first, and then he’ll change his direction after one jump and stay in that direction for good as he bounces around in a square pattern. Just run around in a square and you should be fine.
Chauncey will leave the crib and repeat his pattern: horses, balls, your chance, bounce. When his HP gets below a third he will use the horses a bit differently. After calling in one from the right and one from the left, he will call in one from both directions at once. These will not home in on you, though, so move back to right opposite Chauncey and both will miss.
Eventually you will get Chauncey down to 0 HP and be able to vacuum him up. After the battle a chest will appear and it will contain a special key. E Gadd will then call you and bring you back to his shack. He’ll change the three portrait ghosts you caught back into portraits (then you can look at them in the Gallery, if you want), then you’ll get your money total so far, and then you’ll be able to save.
If you checked all the money spots, then checked them again, caught the gold mouse and the money ghost, and caught Neville and Lydia in one try each, you might have 8 million dollars by now. Only 92 million to go!
Congratulations, you have completed Area One! When you are ready, move on to Area Two…
