Luigi's Mansion Walkthrough

Area Three

Courtyard

I hope you are ready for some more ghost catching fun! In Area Three you will start getting some choices as to the order of the rooms. I have listed the rooms in the order that I feel makes the most sense, but you may be perfectly right to try some other order.

Your first stop should be the Courtyard, but first you should make a pit stop. Take some water and return to the Boneyard. Remember that plant you watered before Bogmire? It’s a little bigger now. Water it some more and it will grow even bigger- but still no reward! We’ll leave that for later yet again. If you did not water the plant before Bogmire then watering it now won’t help.

Now go to the Courtyard. It’s through the barred door near the Bathroom, 1F. You’ll notice that the first floor hallway is all lit up now so you can move around in peace. When you get near the barred door the force field will go away and then you’ll be able to use your special key to unlock the door and enter the Courtyard.

This “room” is very wide and there are flying fish all over the place, so watch out!

Flying Fish: These are like the mice and bats, but only appear in the Courtyard and in very large numbers. Be on the lookout and vacuum them up.

Just ahead of you there should be a tall statue; inspect it and you might earn some cash. As you move to the right, the next thing of monetary interest is the four plants that surround the round fountain. Water all four of them and collect whatever money comes out. As you move more to the right you’ll find a Well. You need to go up the little plank thing, avoiding or catching the hanging ghost in the process. Go down the ladder and into the Well.

Go back to the top.

Well

This may be the only place I am calling a room that has no money in it at all… well, not quite. It is a very important location nonetheless. Move all the way to the right and you’ll enter a cut scene in which Luigi will look through the jaws of a tiger statue and be able to see into another room, the Secret Altar. He’ll scan the room and then notice Mario trapped in a painting. Mario will bang on the painting and call for help, and Luigi will make a pathetic attempt to try to reach him. You’ll also see the back of King Boo, but that’s not important.

After the cut scene leave the Well, but before you do you’ll need to catch a white hanger, which shouldn’t be a problem for a pro like you, then just scoop up the key that appears. It goes to the Rec Room, but before you go there you need to finish up some things in the Courtyard. Climb the ladder and leave the Well. Try as you might, you won’t find a Boo down there.

Go back to the top.

Courtyard (2)

Continue to the right past the Well and you’ll soon see a birdhouse… it has a round hole in it. Shake the birdhouse and something important will come out. It’s Mario’s letter! When you get a chance show it to Madame Clairvoya. Oh, by the way, even though Luigi now knows where Mario is, he will continue to call for him whenever you press A and he has no action to perform.

Despite that foolishness, continue to the right and you’ll find a shed. Open the door with your vacuum, not your hands as it will swing open. The fourth and final Toad is inside. If you haven’t gone to the Well yet he will tell you there is something important inside. Otherwise he will tell you what Mario’s five items are. Save if you want (as always, and I hope you are saving often), then continue to the right. You’ll come to a large statue that you can inspect for money, and you’ll see a door in the front wall. The door goes to the Rec Room, but before you take it you should backtrack through the Courtyard, catching all the hanging ghosts that appear. Once you do you'll receive a chest full of cash, and the lights will turn on. Since this room is outside no Boo will appear, so now you can head to the Rec Room.

Go back to the top.

Rec Room

If you don’t care about money or convenience you can go through this room without doing a thing. If you want to save some walking time, take five seconds or so and make Luigi workout by having him run on the treadmill by the left wall. A key will pop out; it’s one of only two keys in the game that you are not required to find. If you leave the Rec Room through the door in the front wall you’ll be able to unlock the door to the left, which connects the halls of Areas Two and Three and saves you a trip through the Courtyard.

Back in the Rec Room, you can find some money by checking the two hanging lights or the cabinet by the back wall. There’s a money ghost hiding in one of the bikes by the right wall, the one closer to the front wall. And then there’s the next portrait ghost, Biff.

Biff: Whoo, this is a tough perfect capture, Biff pulls a lot. He’s not too easy to make weak either. Biff is standing right in the middle of the room, so step up to one of the three punching bags and use the A button to punch it. Biff will get knocked over, but back up quickly or you’ll get knocked over when the bag rebounds. Biff will get up and chase you, trying to punch you if he gets close. Watch out, his punch packs a huge wallop. Move to the opposite end of another punching bag (or the same one), then when he comes close punch him again. He’ll get up for round three and start swinging his arms wildly. His range is huge, so be careful. Hit him with one more punching bag and he’ll be down for the count. Flash and vacuum, and try to stay in either the bottom left corner or the top right corner because the other corners have stuff near them and the middle of the room is very cluttered. If you lose your connection or don’t flash Biff before he gets up again you’ll need to hit him again.

After you catch Biff you’ll earn a chest containing lots of money and a diamond. Yay! Now you can move on to the next room. At this time four rooms are immediately open to you: Astral Hall, Nana’s Room, Bathroom 2F, and Washroom 2F. You can also easily open the Tea Room and, if you want to follow this Walkthrough exactly, that should be your next step. Get some water, then go up the stairs to the right of the Rec Room. Watch out for bats at the top of the second flight of stairs, which may start to chase you before you can quite see them yet. Soon after the top of the stairs you’ll see a fire burning in front of a door. Use water to put out the fire, wait a few seconds for the smoke to clear, and then enter the Tea Room.

Go back to the top.

Tea Room

In the Kitchen you had to deal with flying pans, now be on the lookout for flying dishes. There are two white grabbers in here, not much of a problem because they can’t hurt you on their own. They are a little high off the floor, though, which makes flashing them tough.

Before you catch these two ghosts, however, you should go to the back half of the room, look for an opening between ghost attacks and dish assaults, then switch to Game Boy Horror mode. There is a piece of cheese on the floor behind the table, so select it and catch the gold mouse that runs out. Once you do the ghosts are now fair game. When you catch them the lights will turn on and a chest will appear… but, it’s on the table, and Luigi can’t quite reach it.

Leave the chest be for a second and check the room for money. The left cabinet, chandelier, and breadbox on the right table are all good candidates, but none can compare to the right cabinet, which will cough up a red jewel just for you. Now that you’ve expired the money sources in this room, look for a way to the chest. There is an arrow pad in the bottom right corner, which you may have accidentally stepped on earlier. Step on it now and you’ll end up upside-down on the ceiling. Walk to the arrow pad that is on the ceiling and you’ll drop down onto the table. Open the chest and you’ll receive the Ice Element Medal.

E Gadd will call you and tell you what you’ve found. Now you can collect ice spirits in places like the ice bucket in this room or the fridge in the Kitchen, then shoot ice from your vacuum. It’s useful for freezing things, of course!

According to Luigi, there is a random gold mouse in this room: Enter and re-enter 'til you hear the sound that indicates that the mouse has appeared. It will appear to your left, and it will go up and down the south side of the room. Not very difficult to catch and it even holds a red jewel. It also gives you 30 coins and 10 bills. Mostly missed 'cause of the cheese golden mouse in this room. Who expects two mice in one room?

Four rooms still remain open to you, but I’ve chosen Nana’s Room next. Leave the Tea Room and go as far to the left as you can, then go up the vertical hallway and into the door on the right. On the way you may meet a new kind of ghost.

Exploding Ghost: These things are nasty! They appear out of the wall in fixed spots of the hallway, then eventually explode. DO NOT vacuum them up, though you could just like mice. They will explode inside your vacuum and cause you damage. Either sneak past right after they appear or wait a safe distance away until after they explode on their own. You might also try dousing them with water.

On to Nana’s Room!

According to Leo, there is a random gold mouse in the Tea Room. I have never found this golden mouse myself, so it must be pretty rare. If it doesn't appear when you enter the room then leave and try again.

Go back to the top.

Nana’s Room

An old but mischievous ghost lives in this room. Before dealing with her, check out the chandelier and the cabinet by the right wall. Then, as quick as that, it’s time for the next portrait ghost.

Nana: She is sitting in a rocking chair near her door. Shake the little table near her and three balls of yarn will fall out and roll around. They have a mind of their own, so wait until one rolls near you, then vacuum it up. It will stick in the mouth of your vacuum and you’ll want to shoot it at Nana. However, her chair moves around a bit while you are holding a ball, plus she also shoots stuff at you (knitting needles?), so be quick and accurate. You’ll need to hit her with all three balls, then you can flash and vacuum. Try to get into the top left corner if you can. Nana doesn’t pull too much, but the couch and table in the middle of the room are nasty obstacles.

The key in the chest Nana leaves goes to the Twin’s Room, which is somewhat later on my tour of Area Three. For now, head to the Bathroom, 2F, which is right across from Nana’s Room.

According to Leo, there is a money ghost hiding in the rocking chair on the right side of the room, and you should get it before knocking over the balls of yarn.

Go back to the top.

Bathroom, 2F

The Bathroom on the second floor is one of the few rooms in the mansion that is not locked, yet it is one of the only ones that really should be. Someone is showering here and, based on the shadow seen through the curtain, it’s someone, well, shapely. Now, a proper host would leave immediately, but Luigi doesn’t know about etiquette, plus all the ghosts have really ticked him off. So, it’s time to do the unspeakable (but apparently writable): use your vacuum to pull away that curtain!

Luigi was secretly hoping he might get incredibly lucky and find Princess Daisy in there, but no such luck. Instead it’s the next portrait ghost, Miss Petunia. Avoid the ball of water she spits at you, then go to work on your next capture.

Miss Petunia: Making her weak is really easy. Just spray her with a little ice. Any amount will do. She’ll sneeze, then you can flash and vacuum. She pulls a bunch but there are no obstacles in the room, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Try to drag her away from the tub, though, as you won’t be able to pick up pearls that fall in the tub or behind it.

When you bag Petunia the lights will come on and you’ll get the key to the Billiards Room, also later on the tour. As always there is no Boo in the Bathroom, so move on to the Washroom, 2F, the first door down from this room.

Go back to the top.

Washroom, 2F

I suggest you come into this room with water power. Or, get some water from the leak near the left wall. But get that water before you open the toilet, because when you do a fire ghost will come out.

Fire Ghost: This mixed-breed has the HP of an orange ghost, the attack of a purple ghost, and the heart of an ice ghost, only made of fire instead of ice. You’ll need to hit it with water before you can flash and vacuum.

The fire ghost would be no problem in a large room, but in the small Washroom you may have trouble avoiding his attacks for long enough to get a spray of water in. Catch him and you’ll earn a chest of money. There is no Boo in the Washroom.

For a nasty yet humorous message you can vacuum off the monster poster in the back right corner of the room. However, the poster won’t come off until you release R while vacuuming, and you’ll receive some damage. Vacuum at your own risk.

Now that you’ve cleared this trio of nearby rooms you can move on to Astral Hall. Go back down the hall and take the vertical hall downward when you can. Take the first door on the right (the other door on the right is blocked by a wooden X), and you’ll be in Astral Hall.

Go back to the top.

Astral Hall

Believe it or not, there is nothing to do in here. Just ignore everything and use the door in the right wall of the room to move on.

Astral Hall

Ok, I lied. The next room would appear to be open, but actually whenever you use the door to it you’ll get a cool noise and end up back in Astral Hall. What are we going to do? Well first exploit the chandelier and two cabinets for cash, then light the five candelabras. Move to the star on the floor in the middle of the room and all the orange candles will turn purple. You’ll then be assaulted by orange ghosts and shy ghosts, one of each at a time. You can figure out for yourself which of the two you’ll catch first.

When you catch all the ghosts the lights will turn on, but you won’t appear to have earned anything. However, the door in the right wall will actually take you somewhere now. Use it to enter the Observatory.

Go back to the top.

Observatory

There appears to be very little here, though the drawers by the door may contain some money. Go to the telescope near the right wall and press A; if you are positioned correctly Luigi will look through it and there will be a cut scene of some stars and the moon.

When your view returns to the room the walls will disappear and there will be a ledge to the right. Step out onto it and use your vacuum to catch a falling meteorite. Use your C Stick to aim at the moon, then fire. If your aim was true the moon will explode, but don’t worry, you’ll see it again later.

After the moon explodes a shimmering walkway will appear in front of you. Follow it (no, you can’t fall off) and you’ll reach a floating platform with a star sitting on it. It’s not just any star, it’s Mario’s star! Pick it up and show it to Madame Clairvoya when you get a chance.

There is no Boo here, so you’ve now completed everything you can do on the second floor… for now. Go to the Billiards Room next. It’s on the first floor, across from the Conservatory.

Go back to the top.

Billiards Room

You’ll quickly notice the next portrait ghost, Slim Bankshot, who is shooting pool in here. Ignore him for a bit though, but watch out for the three pool balls that he’ll shoot off the table. Examine the two chests of drawers on the left wall and find the money ghost hiding in the chair in the bottom right corner. The fan on the ceiling will release a lot of bills if you use your vacuum to spin it enough, but you’ll have trouble doing that right now because one of the pool balls could get stuck in the mouth of the vacuum. Leave the fan for later and take on Slim now.

Slim Bankshot: This ghost will slowly circle the pool table, and when he reaches the short side in the upper left of the room he’ll shoot some pool and three balls will fly into the air. Use your vacuum to catch one, then fire it at him. You won’t be able to see Slim when you look at him, but you can tell where he is because he’s holding a cue stick. You need to hit him with three balls, and if you’re really fast you might be able to catch all three within one circle of the table. If not, let him circle around the table and fire off three more. When you hit him with three balls he’ll be weak, so flash and vacuum. The top right corner is probably the safest place in the room, so get there if you can. Slim doesn’t pull too much, but watch out for Poisonous Mushrooms and the large pool table.

After you catch Slim the lights will turn on and you’ll get a chest of money. You can spin the fan now if you haven’t yet. Then you can use the door in the right wall to enter the Projection Room.

Go back to the top.

Projection Room

Remember the Mirror Room? This room is a lot like it, except you’ll be beset by red grabbers instead of white ones. No ghost will appear until you check the film projector in the front of the room, so go do that, then look sharp for ghosts. Just like in the Mirror Room the ghosts will be invisible, save for the dust that shows up when they appear. You’ll be able to see their shadow on the screen in the back of the room. A large shadow means they’re far from the screen (in the front of the room) while a small shadow means they’re close to the screen (in the back of the room).

Catch all the ghosts and you’ll get a chest that contains Mario’s glove. Show it to Madame Clairvoya when you get a chance. Before you leave the room check out the film cabinet by the right wall and the hanging lights. For a nasty message you can pull back the long sheet in the back of the room, but the sheet won’t actually come off until you release the R button when vacuuming.

Your next stop is the Twin’s Room, right next to the Nursery. Yes, in Area One’s hall! Go there now.

Go back to the top.

Twin’s Room

The room is very quiet, but you can stir things up by vacuuming the bunk bed in the top right corner, which will cause a money ghost to appear. Check out the desks by the left wall and the hanging light, and then see what you can do about the twins.

Henry and Orville: On the right side of the room, past the light, is a helicopter mobile suspended from the ceiling. Stand under it, aim your vacuum at it, and spin the thing by vacuuming and spinning in a circle. After a few turns the twins Henry and Orville will appear. They’ll ask to play with you; say yes. Leave the room and come back when they tell you to. There will be five boxes on the floor and you’ll need to guess which two they are in. You could just guess randomly, or you could use the vacuum test: the correct boxes will shake if you vacuum them. Open the two correct boxes; if you guess wrong you’ll need to leave and try again. Otherwise they’ll yell at you for cheating (whether you used the vacuum or not) and then you can try to catch them.

One kid will board a toy car and try to run you over, the other will board a toy plane and drop bombs. You need to catch both ghosts, but it actually isn’t that hard. Try to vacuum up one ghost completely (they each have 100 HP), then go for the second. Whichever one you hurt second will be the one that drops pearls and counts for the frame. I suggest you go for the ghost in the car first because his run over attempts are more immediately dangerous than the airplane ghost’s random bomb droppings, plus I think maybe I’m wrong and the ghost in the plane drops the pearls whether you attack him first or second.

Aim your vacuum at the target ghost and you’ll eventually remove their vehicle, then flash and vacuum. If the second ghost gets in the way of your vacuum you might want to release your grip rather than risk starting to catch him with the first ghost still active. You may have trouble because the second ghost will still be attacking you, but once you catch the first you’ll have an easier time because there will be no ghost to attack you while you are vacuuming the second, and they don’t pull that much.

After you catch the twins you’ll receive a chest that contains Mario’s shoe. Eww! Now it’s time to make one last stop to the Fortuneteller’s Room.

Go back to the top.

Fortuneteller’s Room (3)

Shine your light on the crystal ball, then speak to Madame Clairvoya again. She’ll tell you something for each item you haven’t shown her yet. When she’s done she’ll let you try to catch her. Just flash and vacuum; she doesn’t even pull very hard. See, she wasn’t even worth her own paragraph, which I started to make back in Area Two.

After you catch the Fortuneteller the lights in this room will finally come on and a chest will appear. The key inside goes to the Safari Room and gives you your first reason to go to the attic. Go back to the Tea Room and catch an ice spirit, then travel past Astral Hall, around the corner, and up the stairs. Watch out for exploding ghosts in the section of hall between the corner and the stairs. Also, in the corner a random gold mouse may appear. If not, you might want to go in and out of Astral Hall and look again. This mouse is very rare though, and I couldn’t get it to appear one time until I walked down the hallway backwards (using Sidestep Mode, which you can switch to and from while the game is paused). I don’t walking backwards is necessary, but you could try it.

The Safari Room is the door in the front wall at the top of the stairs I just told you about.

Go back to the top.

Safari Room

Your first objective in here should be to use Game Boy Horror to find the cheese on the floor and then catch the golden mouse that comes out of it. Once you’ve done that you can aim your vacuum at the animal heads stuck on the back wall. Make them move a little and you’ll be attacked by a water ghost.

Water Ghost: Be careful with these! They have a protected heart of water, similar to the ice and fire ghosts, and you’ll need to hit them with ice before you can flash them. They have 30 HP and a nasty attack. If you see them raise their arms up move away quickly because they will slam the ground and send a wave a good ways all around them.

You’ll need to catch the water ghost and then a second one, and then you’ll have to tackle one water ghost and two banana ghosts at the same time. Be very careful! A heart guarded by water combined with a strong attack combined with a floor littered with bananas makes for a very dangerous situation. Catch the ghosts to make the lights turn on and to earn the key to the Balcony. But before you move on check the light and the stuff by the right wall, especially in the front right corner. Uh oh, there’s a Super Heart! That means there’s a boss nearby. For the first time the boss isn’t actually in this room, but it is indeed nearby.

Now you can go to the Balcony. Take the left door out of the Safari Room and take the door at the end of the attic hall.

Go back to the top.

Balcony

Your Boo Radar will be off the scale, and to the left is a circle of Boos sitting out in the open. You can get a Heart by examining the unicorn statue in front of you, but you shouldn’t have come here (or any new room, really) unless you were in perfect health.

Approach the circle of Boos. They will laugh at you, encircle you, and then it will be time to fight.

Boss of Area Three: Boolossus: The screen will blank out and you’ll reappear in a battle arena that looks just like the Balcony, but you won’t get a Heart from either unicorn statue (there’s one on the left and right) and the doors are gone. Then Boolossus, a huge Boo, will fall to the ground; Luigi will just barely get out of the way without being crushed. Then you fight!

Boolossus will try to crush you, so quickly run over to either unicorn. Don’t run in a straight line for too long because he’s faster on straight-aways but you can outrun him by turning. When you reach the unicorn run around it in as tight a square as possible. Try to vacuum up the ice spirit nearby as you’ll need it. By the way, you’ll still need it even if you had ice power when you entered the battle.

If you run around the unicorn enough (and be sure to change directions if Boolossus does) Boolossus will bump into the horn on the front of the unicorn and pop into the 15 Boos he’s made of. Now you can get to work. You won’t be able to vacuum these Boos up like the other ones in the mansion, though, maybe because it’s still dark. Aim your vacuum into the air and shoot out a steady stream of ice. Aim for any Boos that fly near and change direction often or you could get bumped from behind. If ice touches any Boo they’ll freeze and fall to the ground. Quickly vacuum them up to reduce the number of Boos against you. Catch another ice spirit if you need more ice, but also note that capturing a frozen Boo will restore your ice meter.

After a while Boolossus will reform from the remaining Boos and you’ll need to repeat the pattern. If you’ve caught some Boos he’ll be smaller and faster, but you can still outrun him by running tight squares around the unicorn. Pop him again and try to freeze more Boos.

When you’re down to seven or eight Boos remaining, Boolossus will be too small to hit the horn of the unicorn by himself. You’ll need to get ahead of him, then use your C Stick to point your vacuum at him when he is by the front of the unicorn. Turn your vacuum on and hold him there for a while. You should be able to force him to hit the horn, but if you miss and he ends up being drawn closer to you let go of him and run some more.

Eventually you’ll be down to only three or four Boos remaining. It will become tough to find them when they split up, but hang in there. When there is one Boo remaining it won’t be able to reform Boolossus anymore. And when you catch that last Boo, the boss fight is done and you have won.

Open the chest that appears and you’ll find your third special key of the game. E Gadd will invite you to his shack for a disgusting meal, which, fortunately, you will never suffer to see let alone taste. The portrait ghosts you caught will be turned back into just portraits, and you’ll get your money totaled. Later you may notice that you have caught 15 more Boos than you last remembered. Boolossus was kind enough to count as 15 of the Boos you are looking for as well as a portrait ghost. You should stop by the Gallery and thank him!

At this time, if you’ve followed this Walkthrough and played well, you could have upwards of 60 million dollars. If so you will have no problem reaching the 100 million dollar mark. If you have 50 million dollars you’re still ok, but be sure to pay special attention to the money spots in Area Four. If you have less than 50 million it will be difficult, but still possible. Get all the money in Area Four and repeatedly check the previous rooms for returning cash. It also may not be too late to retrieve some jewels you missed the first time around. When in doubt, take a look.

You can now start Area Four whenever you want. However, when you start Area Four something will happen which will cause you to be unable to save your game for a while. If you do not have time to get trapped in the game, or if you are not up for one of the hardest parts of the game, then DO NOT start Area Four. When you have the time and feel powerful, then you can move on.
