From Goomba

Do all Nintendo universes take place in the same continuity, or are they separate?

They exist in the same continuity in that it is theoretically possible for someone to go from the Mushroom Kingdom to Hyrule, Dreamland, or Zebes.  But don’t ask me to explain the Zelda timeline!  That’s just messed up.

From MammaMia64

Why is it that places in the Mushroom Kingdom look different in each game? A good example is Peach's Castle - the only 2 games where they look relatively the same are Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario.

Well a structure like Peach’s Castle, and especially Bowser’s Castle, is constantly getting demolished and rebuilt, or else redesigned, often in different locations.  I think it’s fair to say the Mushroom Kingdom has a large construction budget.  On the other hand, if we’re talking about a place like Toad Town, which appeared in both Paper Mario and Bowser’s Inside Story, but in very different forms, part of the issue is that you’re only seeing a part of it each time.  It’s not as though the castle town of the Mushroom Kingdom is made up of just four-to-six screens!

From MammaMia64

In Donkey Kong for the Gameboy and Mario vs. Donkey Kong for the Gameboy Advance, Mario knows the handstand and the triple handstand jump, why aren't these moves used in any other Mario games?

I guess Mario didn’t tell Nintendo that he avoided the Spinies in SMB’s level 4-1 by doing handstands.  Or they laughed at him and moved on.  It’s not exactly a move he uses often and it’s not as though the games allow for every action he could possibly perform.

From MammaMia64

Is it the same King Boo in Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Princess Peach, or are they completely different? How about Bowser Jr, Baby Bowser, and "Koopa Kid"? (You know, from Mario Party 5 and Mario Party Advance?) Are they related?

It is the same King Boo each time.  But those Bowser iterations are completely different.  They are, respectively, one of Bowser’s sons, Bower himself as a child, and an oddly Bowser-like minion.

From Quirky Quipster

What exactly IS so bad about Ludwig's "Koopa Symphonies?" Does everyone hate classical music, does he play instruments incorrectly, or does it not just go together properly?

Most of us do not like classical to begin with – too boring!  Aside from that, his songs are always blaringly loud and hours long.  And look, I’m not a musical scholar or anything, but I don’t think a lot of those notes should be strung together like that.  Or he may also not be good at actually playing the piano.  All together it’s a mess!

From Quirky Quipster

I love your style! (You know, your look.) What was your inspiration for it?

I read all the fashion magazines and rip out the pieces that are no good.  If anything’s left that may just become my next style.  If not, who needs ‘em?  I only need a mirror and all the makeup King Dad can buy to create the next great look.

From Tony Paratroopa

Does Mario ever feel embarrassed or awkward when he puts on funny-looking suits like the Tanooki Suit and Rabbit Suit?

No, he loves it!  He thinks all the suits help him showoff and anyway he happily accepts any ability.  I think he’d have no problem wearing the Birthday Suit if he could write it off as a powerup.

From Quirky Quipster

Does Plit have weather Earth doesn't have, or is the weather on both planets the same?

Plit doesn't have new weather, just... more weather.

From Quirky Quipster

Since Bowser's castle is built on a bunch of volcanoes, aren't you afraid one of them could erupt and blow up the whole castle? Are there warning systems to warn anyone of that or anything, or do you have to guess?

We used to think that was a concern.  We've since learned that we are far more likely to destroy the place ourselves - and have.  There is no early warning system.  When you feel the rumbling, run!

From CliveKoopa

In SMB3 you stole the wands from the Mushroom Kings but in NSMBW you all have your own wands. If you had you own wands in the first place, why did you steal those kings’ wands?

You mean aside from the fact we just wanted them and there’s no law saying you can’t steal something you already have?  Well, I guess there is a law…  Anyway!  If they had their wands still, they could have probably changed themselves back, and that would be no fun!

From CliveKoopa

How do Mario and all the other characters in SMG and SMG2 breathe in space without spacesuits?

Mario’s necessity for air has been inconsistent at best.  In the platformers he is able to stay underwater pretty much indefinitely, limited only by the timer, which runs for longer than any normal person should be able to hold his breath.  He needed no oxygen to go to the Moon in Paper Mario 2, either.  In Mario 64 he supposedly required oxygen underwater, but in fact he could apparently breathe through his shoes; if you kept his feet above water, he’d never run out of air!  Of course we all know he needed oxygen in Super Paper Mario, he also wore a helmet in Mario Land 2.  So what’s the answer?  I think in this case it’s safe to say it’s clear that Nintendo didn’t want to have to deal with helmets and air tanks all the time, least of all for the entire game, as in the Galaxies’ case.

From CliveKoopa

Why does Rainbow Road look different in each of the games?

There are lots of rainbows in the world, and lots of Rainbow Roads.  But they don’t last long!  So you’d better but the pedal to the metal.

From CliveKoopa

Why does Iggy have different colored hair than he used to?

This is but a component of the Get a Life initiative that we pushed him to undertake.  I think it’s good that he’s standing up for himself more, but this is not what I meant when I said he should change his hair style!  I couldn’t tell you where he came up with it.

From CliveKoopa

Why haven't you appeared in any of the Mario sports games? Junior gets all the spotlight and you and the rest of the Koopalings don't get even a cameo.

We were offered our own team in Superstar Baseball, but we would have had to play with Junior and Koopa Kid to make 9, so we refused.  Bowser doesn’t often invite us out to participate in his fun, saying that we’re a drag and that anyway we have work to do.  We have sometimes participated in racing and sporadically in sports but this hasn’t yet translated into games.  I think some of our names can be seen on the scoreboard of Mario Golf for the GBA or something.

From CliveKoopa

Why did Bowser go through so many different personas in the Super Show instead of just being King Koopa?

When Bowser's not setting fire to things and terrorizing his own minions and family, he's really a big goofball.  He thought the disguises might help conceal his identity, and his evil intentions, back when he was not so well outside the Koopa Kingdom as to be immediately recognizable by all.  But mostly, he likes to get in character, and be the best in any area.

From CliveKoopa

What happened to the Koopa Troopas at the end of The Pied Koopa?

When Mario stopped playing the song, they came out of their trance and returned to Bowser - thereby becoming Shelless Koopas, just as promised.

From CliveKoopa

Do Mouser and Triclyde work for Wart or for Bowser?

They were created by Wart from out of the Dream Machine in Sub-con, but when the SMB2 adventure bombed and Wart returned to the Mushroom World along with his creations, making them real, Wart wasn't really the king of anything anymore.  So Mouser, Triclyde, and Fryguy went where the getting was good, and teamed up with Bowser, Mouser in particular becoming his top lieutenant for a time.  But Bowser ultimately fired them over their poor performance and ties to the brother with whom he is feuding.  So now they work for Wart again, but Wart doesn't trust them with anything too sensitive.

From CliveKoopa

Why are there so many humans in the Super Show?

Well really, there are plenty of humans, which shouldn't come as a surprise when so many of the "main characters" are human.  Sometimes for no good reason either, like how can Peach be a human when her father is a Mushroom.  But really I think the bigger question here is, if there are so many humans, why did we not seem to know about them in the one SMB3 episode where we thought the visiting family must be aliens.  Well really, there were aliens, they were from a different planet after all!  Mostly though it's just that we hate humans, not that we're afraid of them, but the concept got a bit warped when it was translated into the show.

From CliveKoopa

How many dungeons/cells does Bowser's castle have? How big are they?

Although an entire basement level is usually allotted for incarceration (depending on the specific model of the castle at any given time), there aren't actually very many cells.  Most prisoners are locked up all in one big cell and left to fend for themselves.  Bowser doesn't care much what happens to them, only that they should stay put.  Only big name prisoners, such as princesses and plumbers, or Koopalings for that matter, get private cells.  These cells are small, but all things considered are furnished reasonably well.  One benefit of dungeon life is that the cells are well-heated despite being underground, seeing as there are bound to be lava pools nearby.

From CliveKoopa

How and why did Bowser get so white in Karate Koopa?

Introducing, Dry Bowser!

From CliveKoopa

Do prisoners get any priviliges for being good, not trying to escape, etc?

Officially no, in that Bowser doesn't sanction it.  There is no early release for good behavior.  But the guards often behave more kindly to those individuals who makes their jobs easier.

From CliveKoopa

When are Bowser Junior's and Bowser's birthdays?

They were both born on June 30.  In different years, of course.  Bowser is very proud of this.  It's another thing we hate about Junior.

From Tony Paratroopa

Where do Hammer Bros, Sledge Bros, and Boomerang Bros, keep their hammers and boomerangs when they are on patrol?

Hey, the boomerangs come back, so those Bros. only have to carry two!  At least you didn’t ask me about Fire Bros.  As for the hammer-wielding variety, they are carried within their armor, mainly their shell and other areas you can’t normally see when playing.  The hammers are tightly packed, but are not really unlimited.  In actuality if Mario were to just stand around and a Hammer Brother were foolish enough to just keep jumping around and tossing hammers at the same angle, then yes, he would in fact run out.

From CliveKoopa

Which is bigger, Bowser's castle or Peach's castle?

Bowser’s Castle is far bigger.  In addition to serving as the home for a family of ten, it is the seat of government, an army barracks, a prison, and of course, a death trap.  On the other hand, Peach’s Castle does have the endless stairs, which I guess is infinite size?  So maybe Peach wins after all.

From CliveKoopa

Is Peach a natural blonde or natural redhead? In the early games and cartoons she has red hair but then in every other game she has blonde hair.

In fact her natural hair color is auburn, making her look even that much more like Daisy.  She dyes it blonde so that she looks even more ditzy.  Well, I assume that's the reason, seeing how that is the effect.

From Tony Paratroopa

Do the Fire Flower fireballs disappear after awhile, like in SM3DL?

Yes.  Otherwise they would loop around the world and that would just be silly.  It's too bad because I would pay to see Mario get hit from behind by one of his own fireballs shot around the planet.  Well, I'd make Bowser pay, at least.

From CliveKoopa

How is it that Lemmy, Larry, Ludwig, and Iggy are able to have hair in such odd colors? Is it genetic or do they dye it or something?

Iggy has restyled and dyed his hair.  Lemmy's, Larry's, and Ludwig's hair, and Iggy's original hair, was naturally colored.  Lemmy, Larry, and Iggy use plenty of product to get their hand to stand up.  Ludwig just doesn't comb his hair.

From Tony Paratroopa

What's stronger: Fire Flowers', Venus Fire Traps', Fire Brothers', or Bowser's fireballs?

Bowser’s fireballs are the strongest, followed by Fire Brothers, Fire Flowers, and Venus Fire Traps.  Though, Fire Flowers can be used to shoot a steady stream of fire, which would make them more incendiary than Fire Brothers.

From JINX

Since part of Sky Land rests upon a cloud, does the land move freely through the sky?

It does move somewhat but it mostly stays within view of the land below it even if it means that some clouds drift away and others replace them.  As a collective, they are magically bound to the tower below.

From koopalings@hotmail.com

So how did you guys get your SMB3 lands back from the kings? Why didn't Mario go after you guys again? Is he too lazy or stupid to go out and regain those lands again?

The first time we took over the lands completely, transformed the kings... tricked Mario into getting out of the way so Bowser could kidnap the princess... fun stuff!  So he had to stop us and save the kings.  Now, we've sort of sectioned off smaller portions of the land that the kings aren't so attached to, and we haven't kidnapped or transformed anyone (boo!).  So they consider us to mostly be nuisances at this point.  From time to time they'll defeat one of us and send us away, but they never can destroy us or imprison us for long, so we always come back at some point.

From Pyro Guy

Why can't Bloopers touch the ground? And how could they fly in Lost Levels?

Bloopers are able to powerfully propel themselves, even to the point of appearing to fly.  However, they can't "turn off" the powerful propulsion, they always move quickly.  If they were to propel themselves when they are already close to the seafloor, they would damage themselves.  So they would only propel themselves to the bottom if they were at just the right distance where their normal movements would put them right at the edge of the floor.

From Pyro Guy

What ever happened to Mario's Crystal Star attacks? Or the Star Spirit's attacks for that matter? Does Mario still have them?

No.  The Crystal Star powers rely on Mario having the Stars, which scattered when he fought the Shadow Queen.  The Star Spirits were at his beck and call during that adventure but stopped being receptive to the summonses.

From 3DMarioluigi

How come Metal Mario is able to race Mario even though they’re the same person, as in Super Mario 64?

Metal didn’t answer when I asked him, but I think it’s actually Shadow Mario, who is now separate from Bowser Jr.  I think it’s Il Piantissimo.

From Tony Paratroopa

Are Mario's power-ups made out of Power like the Power Stars?

No...  They're made out of, um, mushroom, leaves... tanooki pelts?  No, scratch that last one.  I'm not sure exactly what the Tanooki Suits are made out of.  Not Star power, though.  Something material.

From Tony Paratroopa

Does the Ice Flower allow Mario to throw as many iceballs as he wants at a time like the Fire Flower does?

Yes, although since iceballs do not cause steady damage, it's probably best to stop throwing them once anyone is the past is frozen.

From Pyro Guy

Is there any relation between Boom Boom and Pom Pom?

I hope not.  It would be a disgrace to women everyone if Pom Pom were related to that oaf.  Except for me, since I don't associate with either of them.

No, there is no relation.

From Pyro Guy

How is it the Baby Bros. have been in the present for the sports games? I thought the time machine was sent back to the past with them.

Yes, it was.  They were sent back in time with a working time machine.  How secure is that?  Someone piloted it back.

From I Love Mario

If Peach has Toads, what does Daisy have?

Toads also live in Sarasaland!  But mostly Daisy has Beezos buzzing around her.

From I Love Mario

How come Bowser Jr. appears more than the Koopalings?

I can offer no more than sarcasm for why we have not appeared in the adventure games as often.  We all attack Mario constantly, so why it is that other adventures involving all the Koopalings, or any number of the original Koopalings, have not been made into games is something you will have to ask Nintendo.  I can tell you that Bowser doesn't often allow us to compete in the sports.  He says it's too dangerous - really?  No, really what he wants is his alone time.  But he often allows Jr. to play because he sees himself in him.  Just to prove that it's not too dangerous, we were allowed to play golf at one point and you could see some of our names on the leaderboard.  Bowser was ok with it as long as we didn't share the links with him.

From I Love Mario

Why is Luigi in love with Daisy?

Luigi says they are perfect for each other.  I say, he is lieing to himself.  He really loves Peach, but won't fight Mario for her.  Ironically, if he was with it, I think he would actually advance that relationship, unlike Mario.  Anyway, he has settled for someone who kind of looks like Peach and who probably prefers Mario as well.  Luigi and Daisy probably both cry themselves to sleep at night.
